  1. It's a good one. The Henderson ain't too shabby, either.
  2. Glad you are enjoying it, MG On order (after listening to "Highlights from Self Portrait"): Artie Shaw -- "In the Beginning: 1936" "Artie Shaw and His Orchestra: 1949" (A thorough review of this one over at amazon. Very convincing, as well ... )
  3. I notice PITA has used the same tactic (submit an ad and have it rejected) to generate the same sort of buzz. And I suspect this is an intentional advertising tactic. Both these outfits submitted ads that they probably suspected might be rejected, and are now benefiting from the buzz created by the rejection itself. Cheap and effective. People want to see the rejected ad. Cheaper than paying for a Super Bowl spot, that's for sure.
  4. This has been kind of danced around here in several comments, but what exactly did Rourke do? I'm not a big follower of this sort of thing. Did he beat up women? Steal money? Commit arson? What's the big human downfall with Rourke. (He does look shockingly worn in this film, or at least in the promos for it).
  5. Very nice Dan. Coltrane looks great. He got my vote(s).
  6. Thanks for starting this thread, MG. The abbreviation (bb) on the Jabbo Smith recording was a bit of a mystery. And thanks Mikeweil for the great photos and insights here. Now another possible mystery: In the photo below, Mike indicates that there are no trombones. I'm wondering what the instruments are in second row on the left? They look like slide instruments of some kind, although they're mostly obscured so it's hard to tell. Thanks Mike. MG
  7. The Dead were pretty much over for me by the mid-'70s, but American Beauty is a classic album. Europe '72 was kind of my introduction, so I've always had a soft spot for that. And Working Man's Dead, of course.
  8. Indeed I have been mining this thread a bit, as well as the HEP label thread. Lots of great ideas. And thanks for yours above as well.
  9. If this is your first traversal through these, you're in for a major treat! A series of albums that still fascinates and enthralls me after overdosing on 'hard - bop'. True classics! It'll be my introduction. ... after reading through the thread about these recordings the other day.
  10. You may be onto something here.
  11. And with the last of the amazon credits I accumulated through my massive CD sale: Bobby Previte -- "Set the Alarm for Monday" (with Ellery Eskelin and Steve Bernstein, Billy Ware on vibes as well) And finally, Shelly Manne & His Men -- At the Blackhawk, Vols. 1 through 5. I believe I'm done.
  12. That Shavers-Hawkins just arrived here the other day. I've only had a chance to give it a first pass, and all sorts of other stuff has rubbed out the impression a little bit. Need to revisit it soon.
  13. Good stuff. I'm interested in seeing this one.
  14. This looks awfully familiar.
  15. I owe it all to the generous and equally hungry-for-new-(used)-music members here who gobbled up a long list of CDs from me that I no longer listened to! So really it's kind of a giant CD swap, in the grand scheme of things. And in that spirit, one last one today that I couldn't pass up after visiting the hep thread: Bennie Moten -- "1929 - 1932: Band Box Shuffle" (hep)
  16. I'm in! Just fired up Teddy Wilson's "Of Thee I Swing" after retrieving it from the mailbox and loving it. Gotta comb through this thread for some more ideas.
  17. I ordered that one earlier but the seller sent me a different disc with the same title, a Past Perfect release. It's fine, but I am looking forward to the Frog. Several folks here regard it as you do -- essential.
  18. A few more ordered today, with the proceeds from the massive cd sale: Buck Clayton -- "Complete Legendary Jam Sessions: Master Takes" Chick Webb and His Orchestra -- "Stompin' at the Savoy" Cootie & Rex -- "The Big Challenge" "Ruby Braff Featuring Coleman Hawkins" Harry Allen -- "Stompin' the Blues" Pee Wee Russell -- "Swingin' With Pee Wee" Hot Lips Page -- "Jump for Joy" "Buck Clayton Jam Session" Jimmie Noone -- "Complete Recordings" "Buck & Buddy Blow the Blues"
  19. bump (cause my computer's acting up while I'm reading this and need to reboot).
  20. I will. Should arrive in a week or so. I have been foraging around a little bit for territory bands and the sound samples on this one were terrific.
  21. All orders have shipped as of 9/22. If you folks are any indication, I have complete faith that the economic turnaround has already begun. Awesome response. And thanks to everyone who helped clear out some of my shelf space. I do hope everyone enjoys the music. There's 51 CDs left, although there is a bid pending on the lot of them, so the sale could conceivably be over any moment. Thanks again, and enjoy!
  22. A few more in the hopper: Johnny Dodds -- "Blue Clarinet Stomp" Lucky Thompson -- "Tricotism" Lester Young Trio Hot Dance Bands from OKeh: 1923 - 1931 Texas and Tennessee Territory Bands: 1928 - 1931
  23. bump for yet further reductions.
