  1. He was due 9 million this season and the Cowboys would have had to pay a significant amount of his salary if they found someone dumb enough to take him. If some team does sign him it will probably be near or at the league minimum. I don't think even Al Davis is foolish enough to pay him more than that. Thanks. Makes some sense now. But it's still extremely rare for a player with his skills to be outright released. Heck, the Falcons even held on to Vick, didn't they? It'll be interesting to see where Owens lands. I wonder if the Pats would be interested? They don't seem to shy away from players with troublesome reputations. And they wouldn't hesitate to cut him if he didn't fall into line. ... And they do have some cap room, I think, after their deft trade with KC.
  2. Pena did well today in his first game back -- doubled the first pitch he saw, added another double in his second at bat. Price is tagged to start the season in the minors, it looks like.
  3. Maybe this is obvious and I'm just not aware, but why didn't/couldn't they trade him? Maybe the Chiefs have a third-round pick they can part with. Does it have something to do with the way the cap is figured maybe? In other words, would it have cost them more to trade him than to just release him?
  4. Very cool. I really do love newspapers.
  5. Evidently, you live in a desert. Quite trying to grow grass.
  6. I've never been to Big Canoe, but there's some beautiful country north of Atlanta, which is where this is. You start to get into the mountains (small, but old), lots of lakes. (But there has been a drought, so you might want to check on how the lake is). Here's a random photo of the environs around Big Canoe:
  7. Florida has a dry season that basically runs from late fall until about May. Average rainfall from October through May is less than 3 inches/month (except for March, when it's just under 3.5). Nov. = 2.35; Feb. = 2.66; April = 1.83, etc. So it gets dry here, then very wet in the summer. But during the dry season, my grass goes brown. No biggie. When the rain starts again, it greens right up (and, unfortunately, I have to cut it once a week again).
  8. What did the bank do for her?
  9. Do you have any sense Bev of whether the catalog includes OOP or otherwise hard-to-find music? That would certainly be a draw, I'd think.
  10. Maybe the thread about bum buddy pushed him over the edge. ...
  11. Whatever his human failings, RIP.
  12. You are absolutely right about that. Watering lawns more than once a week (if you must) is just not necessary and should always be done at night. In fact, it's counterproductive for the grass to over-water. The roots won't grow as deeply as they should and you'll have to continue to water more than you should just to keep the grass alive.
  13. Well done Dan. I personally am taking this as a sign that a widespread recovery is imminent!
  14. Just read what seemed to me to be a pretty useless "Ten things to do if you get laid off" list. But, the one thing that jumped out me was this: never sign anything right away. Take the paperwork home and go over it, with an attorney, if you can. Apparently there's usually some wiggle room for negotiating a better severance package -- things like extending health insurance coverage.
  15. Yes, happy birthday Noj!
  16. Well, I guess the deterioration of our economy creates some work as well, just as the deterioration of a life form creates energy. I was discussing with someone just yesterday how the only two kinds of businesses that are still doing relatively well are those that are selling really expensive stuff, and those that are selling really inexpensive stuff.
  17. You'll be able to listen to some music on the commute!
  18. Congrats Dan. Sounds like things are looking up!
  19. Congratulations guys. Well deserved! :tup
  20. Thanks. I did see the "Unlucky Woman" track on various Humes titles and thought it might be the same. The Hep looks good.
  21. Very good. On a related note, you've talked about some others in this thread that I'm interested in. Specifically "the original Alfonso Trent Band; the Missourians; Charlie Johnson; Jeanette's Syncopaters; the Bennie Moten Band; the 1929-1930 Chicagoans (Benny G, Teschmacher, Bud Freeman, Joe Sullivan, Krupa)." Moten I'm acquainted with. And Freeman, through his Mosaic single only, I believe. Are some of these likely to be included in the Blues project? You also mentioned your Louis Armstrong CD, which didn't jump out at me during a quick pass through your website. Details? (I still have my eye on Jews in Hell, btw. Waiting for the month to clear.) thanks
  22. Where might one find a copy of Pete Brown's solo on Unlucky Blues?
  23. I think I need another cup of coffee ....
  24. That, and $4.50 will get you a cup of coffee.
