  1. An obvious question, but ... does this coincide with your starting any new medication?
  2. I'm in. It'll be a delight exploring this one. I'll be interested to hear what others, from all points of view, have to say after digging into it. Should be fun.
  3. Discs added 9/17 ... including some Braxton, Sclavis, Clusone 3 ...
  4. There was a stat during the game last night that the Red Sox outscored the Rays during their 18 games against one another this season by something like 20 runs (80-60 ... something like that), yet the Rays won the season series 10-8. I'm not much of a stats guy, but it's interesting to see which stats are more reliable as predictors. ... I'm always curious, for instance, when an announcer says something like, "Team X hasn't beaten Team Y at home in the past four years." Is that supposed to indicate it's unlikely to happen now, or is it supposed to mean it it's increasingly more likely to happen, given the law of averages.
  5. Haven't heard the album, but I've read Braxton was a little pissed at the title -- and given the man's output, it is pretty absurd.
  6. If "investor class" means rich, I'd say there is not much to this opinion. A person loses a shit load of money from investments gone bad and he's now going to want to pay more in taxes? I think the opposite would be true, as they would want to hang on to even more of what they're making. To explain (quoting from the post linked to above): "While there are a lot of different components to the modern Republican coalition, one major component is the so-called country club Republican. This is the kind of person (I know many of them) who doesn't particularly care about social issues or neoconservative adventurism, but votes Republican primarily because he doesn't want to pay any more taxes than absolutely necessary. Many of these people have also rationalized their continued support for the Republican party by convincing themselves that the Republicans are better stewards of the economy, at least the part of the economy they care the most about: our capital markets. "But no amount of GOP spin is going to put money back in their brokerage accounts. If the market doesn't turn around soon, it's going to force many of them to question their assumptions. An email posted on CNN tonight summed it up pretty well: 'Republicans lowered my taxes, and will keep them low. But the value of my home has dropped 20%, my health insurance costs have doubled, gas costs $4 a gallon, and my investments are in the tank. Please, tax me.' "Now, I'm not sure how typical that response is, but at the very least, there have to be a lot of typically Republican voters out there right now who are questioning the Republican party's knee-jerk aversion to the kinds of sensible regulation that could have averted this economic meltdown. And at some point, some of these folks may question how much tax cuts are really worth to them if their investments aren't growing at all and the government is sliding into an ever more precarious financial state." Thank you. ... This obsession with tax rates is a joke. Tax rates cannot be judged in a vacuum. Lower taxes for everyone all the time is not a policy position, it's a bribe.
  7. I love her small group and solo work... Live at the Cookery [should be on Emusic.com] Nite Life - solo, not the best recording quality, but really beautiful music. My Mama Pinned a Rose On Me If you check any large online store, you should be able to find a number of other late-career live albums. I like them all. I'm also partial to her earlier work as an arranger. Thanks. I've put those on my wish list. About to spin Zodiac Suite again. I'll look for some of the live stuff. ... I'll also be putting on Dave Douglas' Williams tribute "Soul on Soul" for a fresh listen soon just for fun. Thanks again.
  8. I hadn't heard the Smoltz comparison, but I was kinda thinking along the same lines ... not really a "shitty" pitcher. He was going on three days rest tonight though, and was struggling with control just a little. But this Rays staff overall is still pretty young, still learning how to pitch, really. Garza in particular can get a little jumpy sometimes. And we saw Kazmir implode in Game 1 against the Sox, yet he has been dominant in the past -- (at least I think I remember that). But then again, I think I know where Dan's coming from. The Red Sox offense just seems hot and cold lately. But Ortiz!!!!!!! His second home run tonight was an absolute moon shot. It's literally still up there ... in one of those catwalks.
  9. Picked up a couple of Williams discs recently after perusing this thread and listening to some samples on seeline's blog. Zodiac Suite (1945) and Free Spirits (1975) Buster Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. Free Spirits includes a couple of versions of Baby Man -- what a great, great song. Discussing Williams' music with seeline earlier, it strikes me as very spiritual, haunting. Something there that I can't quite put my finger on. I'd guess these are two pretty good discs to get acquainted with Williams' earlier music and later music. ... But where should I venture now?
  10. The best were those "interest only" home loans. I believe they were/are adjustable-rate, also (just for an added kick in the ass). What could possibly go wrong!?
  11. Do you mean, even in a long series? Sonnanstine wouldn't throw twice in a short series. Fact is, the Rays are a completely unknown quantity in the playoffs. They may clutch up. They may win the whole banana. They've shown they can play lights-out for long stretches, and they can go into the tank for 7 straight games. They can go -- what was it, 2-for-20 something over two games in Boston with runners in scoring position? -- and still have enough pitching and defense to win. It's a complete crap shoot with them in the mix, IMHO. They may just be idiots enough to think they can do it! (I count 6 cliches total. Not too bad.)
  12. Employee self-help web sites. They've managed to turn a 5-minute phone call into an hour-long nightmare of navigating a security-obsessed, overly complex and ultimately useless corporate website. Efficiency my ass. :bwallace2:
  13. Yet another socialist scheme.
  14. Yeah, not a bad game. I wonder how much $$ McNabb had on the Cowboys?
  15. I hope they hang in there until January, at least. I have a fairly fat Washington Mutual CD -- though it's insured if they go belly up. ... and, I reiterate among all the doom and gloom that the current equities environment presents an excellent long-term buying opportunity. I, for one, do not believe the entire financial system is going down the drain.
  16. Daniel Carter, Reuben Radding, Gregg Keplinger -- "Language" Ordered tonight after listening to Carter and Radding's "Luminescence." Carter has lovely tone/soul/whatever-you-call-it ... gently swingin' free improv. Need more.
  17. Rays are getting a shit-kicking tonight. ... But, Sox can win 2-of-3 and the Rays are still in first by percentage points. Not much solace there though. Odd move by the Brewers. Really odd.
  18. Many happy returns.
  19. Noodles -- nice. Had a neighborhood cat way back when that I used to call Noodles.
  20. I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out. Did they say what the neutral site was in 1900?
  21. First no-hitter ever at a neutral site, for all you trivial geeks.
  22. Jesus, you're still moping around over that? Okay, here....3 questions to boost your score 2 points: 1) Dick & Jane play with a dog named : a) SACD b) Spot c) E. Digby Baltzell 2) George Patton is buried in: a) Luxembourg b) Luxembourg c) Luxembourg 3) The topless dancers featured at the start of a James Bond film were at: a) A Dunkin Donuts in Butte, Montana b) The 'Bottoms Up' Club in Hong Kong c) Thursday evening reading at The Edgar Allen Poe Society of Baltimore. Well, it's a shitty score, but it's my shitty score, so I'll keep it. Wouldn't want to ... you know ... fix the numbers, or anything.
  23. Good to hear all's well with you Aggie.
