    RIP Mike Zwerin

Sad news, leaves an interesting playing and writing legacy.
  3. Still with Johnny Griffin; Change of Pace. Riverside (French Carrere issue). Decent sound and pressing but back cover reproduction very sooty.
  4. Inspired by John L's track of the week Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside. Ace UK issue.

    David S. Ware

Coming in a bit late here but I've got very fond memories odf seeing Ware (twice ?) in London back in the late 70s with Andrew Cyrille. This group is documented on two Soul Note and Black Saint records. I particularly remember a closing blues - Ware shouting in fine r&b mode. About 20 years later a more cerebral performance didn't have the same impact.
  6. Barron also appears on Philly Joe Jones' PJ's Beat[/i, Atlantic, 1961. Fine exciting playing all round on several bebop standards. Lord lists an unissued PJJ album by the group but presumably this is one of the "lost" sessions.
  7. Philly Joe Jones; PJ's Beat. Atlantic (UK Polydor) earlier Sonny Red; The Mode. Jazzland (Japan)
  8. The French Carrere and Musidisc pressings were generally inferior imo.
  9. Did you see Teddy in the UK? Again, at the end of his playing career. I had the chance to speak to him briefly, a very nice and courteous man.
  10. Jackie McLean; Consequences. Blue Note rainbow.
  11. As far as I can recall mine sounded fine, but then that was the only version available at the time.
  12. George Wallington; Knight Music. GI Records, UK reissue. now playing Hank Mobley; A Slice of the Top; Blue Note rainbow.
  13. I'm sorry to hear this, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
  14. Booker Little; The Legendary Quartet Album. (Island, UK issue of Time album)
  15. It's a LOT cheaper if you book all your lodges yourself and organise your own car hire. That's what my wife does. She and her friend have complete flexibility in planning the trips. (Mind you - the road along the Caprivi Strip from Nam to Victoria Falls is the most dreadful she's ever driven on.) MG Can't be worse than the Sani pass. Thanks for the tip. But is looks like it will be the California and Oregon next. We always drive ourselves in the US.
  16. Booker Little; Out Front. Candid/Barnaby
  17. Hoping to go back before too long. There's a Namibia, Botswana, Zambia trip which looks great, finishing at the Victoria Falls. Really enjoyed staying in those bush lodges.
  18. "They Call The Wind Maria". From Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers Selection From Lerner and Loewe. RCA Love the way Griffins leaps out on this track.
  19. Still a damn fine record!
  20. Where was that, John? MG It was taken in the Hluhlewe Game Reserve, South Africa. SA is a fabulous place for a holiday. The wildlife is unbelievable.
  21. Taken last month. I would not recommned walking here.
  22. Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road, London. February 1958. Just around my 16th birthday. In support the Jazz Couriers. The Couriers portion of the concert was issued shortly after on record.
  23. A masterpiece, IMO Another one to pull out and play. This thread is a real time stealer.
  24. Just got to bring this one up again. Guy is absolutely right, wonderful cd.
  25. Perfectly satisfactory as long as the notes are legible. Some back covers had extensive notes.
