  1. Inspired by chewy Hank Mobley; Dippin'. Blue Note NYC mono. Certainly is a nice sounding set.
  2. Trombone vinyl this morning Andre Previn and J J Johnson; Mack The Knife; CBS Classics(UK) Ray Anderson; Old Bottles, New Wine. Enja
  3. Imports into the UK also carried a stamp to indicate that a fee had been paid for the performing rights.
  4. As far as I know it wasn't speculative. Someone knows it!!
  5. I saw the lineup in Jazz Journal many years ago. Unfortuntely I can't remember the details but I seem to recall that the names weren't well known (at least to me then).
  6. I agree, copies of existing cds.
  7. I have two or three Avids. They are good value but some of the couplings seem a bit strange and alternates are not included. The sound is variable though. The Brubeck set is perfectly adequate though the Brown/Roach Quintets sound more boxy than I remember. I wouldn't be put off if I wanted the music.
  8. I have a UK copy of this. I'd be happy to dispose of it. PM me if interested.
  9. Happy Birthday Jon, have a great day.
  10. Turbington's playing on Zawinul is very striking, well worth a listen.
  11. I'd certainly like to have the rest of the Modern Windows album. It made no sense when the cd was released not including it. Now Hear This on Fresh Sound is another nice date from 1964.
  12. I have several of these on vinyl. The Konitz/Marsh recordings are all interesting.
  13. Sad news indeed! Played the Soul Sisters cd a few days ago. Nice date.
  14. The Bill Barron Savoys I've heard are excellent. A collection of Barron's Savoys would be a good project for LOnehill.
  15. Happy Birthday Mike
  16. Happy Birthday Hans - a good day for a birthday!
  17. More sad news. Thanks for the music.
  18. I've been working my way through a bunch of Special Edition live tapes this week. Lots of nice stuff but a long version of India with a lengthy oblique piano introduction by DeJohnette, followed by David Murray on bass clarinet has got to be the most arresting thing I've listened to this week.
  19. Yes, Happy Birthday David Murray, 35 years of listening pleasure.
  20. The unknown sax is most likely Greg Osby. He's on other tapes from this tour. Very nice stuff.
  21. I never saw Special Edition as I'm sure they never visited the UK. But I did see DeJohnette's Quintet with Gary Thomas and Bennie Maupin. That was loud fast and frantic. I have several live Special Edition tapes from Eoropean concerts in varying fidelity. I've just played a 40 minute version of Tenor Madness which must give a good idea of what the band sounded like live, it's a pretty energetic performance. This version of the group features Howard Johnson, John Purcell, Rufus Reid plus a second sax I can't identify from the announcement. If anyone can recall this 1985 (?) concert/tour I'd appreciate any additional information.
  22. A nice way to spend lunch. All the music is familiar but that's no bad thing.
  23. I wouldn't have chosen Boney Sugar Davis but I guess I'm stuck with it.
  24. That Peter Warren album on Japo was great, and it was Ray Anderson. Don't remember selling it but as I can't lay my hands on it, I must have done.
