    Clifford Thornton

    Different cover art
  3. The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra is a great band. It seems to be pretty much overlooked these days. Nice bunch of soloists too. I'm especially fond of baritone player Heywood Henry. Second only to Carney in this period.
  4. I have a few records in my cellar that suffer from mold caused by exposure to the slightly damp atmosphere over the years. The jackets are ok, it's just a powdery substance that usually brushes off easily. The records are a different matter, the small round areas of mold cling tenaciously and often need two or three thorough cleans to get it all off. The surfaces never seem quite the same though. The moral is keep them well ventilated and dry.
  5. Just finished re-reading Jazz Masters In Transition 1957-69 by Martin Williams. Nice set of essays from a golden age. Sent me to the cd player/turntable a few times.
  6. Gerry Mulligan : Jeru (Dutch CBS)
  7. Have a great day and many happy returns Alon.
  8. Elvin Jones "Puttin' It Together", (JRVG). Nice find for the equivalent of $7 in a local used record store.
  9. Interesting, I have a 2lp set with this title on Sonet in my racks. Recorded 1951, 1956 and 1958. Presumably the same music.
  10. Have a great day.
  11. Verve overdubbed strings on Wynton and Wes! A Creed Taylor speciality.

    Horace Tapscott

There's an interesting date on Interplay, "Horace Tapscott In New York". Four tracks recoded in 1979 with Art Davis and Roy Haynes.
  13. Probably yes.
  14. It looks like it's you then Red.
  15. Volunteers then, and for mid-May onwards please.
  16. Do we have a volunteer, or does someone want to move up? Looks like I took my eye off the ball here
  17. A fabulous disc, one of my favourites. Love "People Will Say We're In Love".
  18. Had the vinyl from the start - fine music, sound acceptable.

    FREDDIE IS 67!

Happy birthday Freddie, time to give you a spin.
  20. There was a Bill Evans show,Monk, Blakey, Jazz from Kansas City, Cannonball, Rollins I think. Snippets of these shows often appear on jazz documentaries. Some are commercially available, not sure about format though. The series was followed up by a similar programme "Jazz Goes To College". In the latter series, if my memory is correct, I was at the telerecording of the Horace Silver programme. A friend of mine has a full list, he's not on the internet but if no one posts a list I'll get the details and post them shortly.
  21. We promoted a concert by Scott just before Christmas last year. Nice swinging and very professional playing but slightly lacking the excitement factor. He told me he was based in London now. Here's a rather poor image I took at the gig. Dave Green is the bass player.
  22. Nice find in a local second hand record shop - Elvin Jones "Puttin' It Together". Japanese RVG. Nicely priced at £4.00
  23. Just Gary and Sidewinder, both great guys.

    Myra Melford

She plays harmonium with Equal Interest and the trio cd "Dance Beyond The Color" on Arabesque.

    Myra Melford

I particularly enjoy her two trio albums on Enemy and the the first two on Hat. I can't say that I feel the same about some of her later recordings which concentrate on composition and don't have the full bodied swing of her earlier recordings which are full of great melodic hooks that catch the ear and of course, with Reggie Nicholson they swing like mad. I've tried the later ones but I'm sorry to say they don't do very much for me.
