    Carla Bley

I have mixed views about Carla Bley. I loved seeing her live with her own band and with Charlie Haden's LMO but for some reason her recordings don't do too much for me, fine on the first listen or two then they pall very quicky. I didn't take to the very bg band at all.
  6. I didn't miss much in London between 58 and 90 but I missed Coltrane and I've regretted it ever since. The publicity was very poor and I found out about the concert the day after it happened. Couldn't believe I'd missed it.
  7. Seeing Ellington for the first time in 1962(?). Art Ensemble, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Brass Fantasy, Ornette Coleman, and David Murray on their first UK visits. All absolutely unforgetable. A little more recently John Scofield Quartet with Joe Lovano in 1991(?). I'm probably being unfair but a lot recent things and to some past concerts (and I've been to a lot) but most seem insignificant when compared to these. The sound, the atmosphere, spine tingling.
  8. Happy Birthday
  9. Have a great day.
  10. Are you sure about that? Check here. (The Amazon/Caiman link I posted previously is for their U.S. Amazon page. The above link is for their U.K. Amazon page. ) the amazon US price is much better, 50 dollars vs. 50 pounds! Check the other private sellers on amazon.com, for a few dollars more, they may be shipping overseas. The 60 dollar price of amazon.com itself isn't bad either. Thanks guys - yes I noticed you can link to caiman on amazon.co.uk but as couw says the price is not right! I may go the other route... I'm waiting for the Jazztet to leak out this way (damn I'm tight fisted...). David, I'm tight fisted too - let me know where you go for these. John
  11. I'm in the UK, there are some nice places in Europe, Bruges is a beautiful city for example. But the USA is the place for me. Visited fifteen states so far, mostly touring the national parks, but I enjoyed (not in any particular order)Colorado, Arizona and Utah the most.
  12. Thanks for that link, love Ray Anderson. Good to hear something new from him.
  13. Many happy returns

  15. I have two or three 45 singles and a four track 7" 33 (with the juke box labels and small cover reproductions.)
  16. Happy birthday Michel
  17. The shadow of Ornette looms large here in both the compositions and some of Simmons' solos. But because or despite of that it's a delight from start to finish. Although Lasha is the leader he doesn't play on two tracks and doesn't solo on another where he plays alto in the theme statements. Simmons is the star but Lasha's flute makes for a fine contrasting second voice. The two basses don't get in each others way and provide some very nice interplay. Drummer Stone keeps time and swings nicely without being too extrovert. Fine cd, highly recommended
  18. Yes please, especially as I've disposed of most of my Jazztet stuff.
  19. Prince Lasha featuring Sonny Simmons, OJCCD 1945 (Contemporary S 7610) Lasha(flute) Simmons (as) Gary Peacock and/or Mark Proctor(bass) Gene Stone (d) Recorded 21 November 1962. Congo Call Bojangles Green and Gold Ghost of the Past Red's Mood Juanita Lost generation A.Y. This one got a recommendation in another thread recently. Some interesting music here.
  20. Alon is giving us time to collect our thoughts and energy to tackle this one!
  21. Looks just like mine.
