  1. They are a bit of a mixed bunch but I like 'em as will most confirmed AEOC fans. Best for me is the two volume live in Japan set. Cadence are still listing the AE/Brass Fantasy and the Art Ensemble of Soweto cds. Both of these discs have their moments
  2. Nice choice, this is my kind of music and Winchester is probably my favourite vibes player. The cd hits a nice groove from the off and it continues right the way through. It's one of those records exemplify jazz of the period, relaxed but with plenty of soul and swing. Good to hear Peagler and Brown from the Modern Jazz Disciples too, a disc well worth checking out.
  3. The WSQs recent "Experience" a Hendrix tribute is a nice cd. Bass and drums are added on some of the tracks and there are a couple of guests. Makes for a nice listen if, like me you like all the players involved but find the drum-less groups a bit heavy going.

More a set of amusing and entertaining monologues. Tasty, cool backing from James Moody, Kenny Burrell, Peck Morrison and Roy Haynes.
  5. Many happy returns Nate.
  6. Those Savoy 2lp set are great. I have loads, good notes, even better music. I'm glad there are still fans of the series. The single albums were a tasty series too.
  7. A quick look at Lord reveals Herbie Hancock Trio (Live In St Louis)- one track on VGM003 Donald Byrd/ Pepper Adams; Hip Entertainment (Live In St Louis) VGM 002 Bryon Allen Trio; ESP 1005
  8. Just got around to playing the session. In common with everyone elses opinion here it's lovely stuff.
  9. This is a recording I feel I'd probably enjoy and ought to have or, at least, heard. Somehow I've never got around to it. I imagine it doesn't have a lot in common with Crispell's recent work on ECM which I've found very enjoyable. I'll look forward to reading more comments about this disc.
  10. Happy Birthday Marty, the cdr will be in the post tomorrow.

Mine came yesterday. Inspiring stuff from the first note. One quibble, maybe two twenty minute plus tracks is one too many. That said there's plenty of variety and Grimes sounds great swinging hard and digging deep. Nice note from from William Parker. Recommended.
  12. Alan Bates who owns the material told me that this is considered to be the least successful Candid session. I can't recall who told him, Nat Hentoff maybe, but the opinion was that Williams was not ready to be a leader.
  13. Paul Bley Trio on Emarcy(J)
  14. My modest system is biwired. I'm not sure I can hear any difference. I'd give it a try though if it isn't too costly.
  15. Happy birthday and many more.
  16. Sad news indeed, RIP Grey
  17. Merry Christmas everyone. Peace and goodwill in 2005
  18. Kahil El'Zabar and David Murray; We Is - Live At The Bop Shop

  22. Fine drummer. On his Bethlehem album "Stan Levey Plays" he names one of his tunes "Exaktamo" after his camera ".
  23. Consistency was a Blue Note trade mark but for sheer quality it has to be Shorter.

Hmm, I doubt I'll be picking this one up. Not a fan of Murray, and not so interested in hearing more Drake. I haven't heard Grimes since his resurrection - but somehow I can fairly easily imagine what music these three would be making... Looks essential to me!
  25. I agree, his Arabesque recordings are all very good and worthy addition to a collection.
