  1. I've been thinking about this one too. I have a fair amount of the music and that's discouraged me so far. Maybe a Christmas treat to myself.
  2. I think most trane fans snapped it up pretty quick. I certainly did. I think that opinions were just as mixed then as they are now.
  3. I've had version one since it's first release. It was a tough listen then and after listening to both versions it's still tough. The big problem for me is the free for all ensembles, some structure would have improved things and might have set the solos off to better effect. As for the solos, Hubbard doesn't fit too well and I find myself liking John Tchicai's and Marion Brown's more thoughtful efforts the most. Elvin is great throughout. Perhaps because of familiarity I prefer version 1. A valiant failure?
  4. My "Euro" version arrived today. Curiously the spine of the box says "THE COMPLETE VERVE TAL FARLOW CONCERT BAND SESSIONS"
  5. Too old to hear all the stuff I want to.
  6. Yesterday it was Dexter Gordon; A Swingin' Affair.
  7. AAJ gives 16 August 1959 for Eskelin.
  8. No question; it's David Murray. He just gets in, he's 50 next February. I've had the pleasure of folowing his career live and on record for almost 30 years. He's always comes up with the goods. He's back playing in London in November.
  9. I have a special affection for this album. It wasn't easy to come by in days of vinyl and when I eventually got a copy I loved it from the off and I'd say it is my favourite McLean album. I particularly enjoy the tracks with Byrd, Philly Joe is so tasty. "Quadrangle" I find especially striking . The sextet tracks are equally good, how can they not be with a lineup like this. A Blue Note masterpiece from start to finish. Good clear sound on my first generation cd. The cover art looked so good on the 12" album, it hasn't tranferred well to the cd format.
  10. Apart from a handful of cdrs there is, unusually, no backlog at present. This is jaut a temporary situation as I'm expecting the Tal Farlow Verve set and then the new Miles box within the next few days - so back to normal then.
  11. Thanks for the appreciation Gary. It was a great evening but we'll need a some hard work and some good fortune to carry on. Be nice if you could make it Bob but I know it's a long trip. Thanks for your best wishes.
  12. Many happy returns
  13. Happy Birthday Brad
  14. Coming in a bit late here but in my view it's uneccessary.
  15. According to Amazon.UK release date has now been put back a week to 11 October. Looks like we have to be patient for another week.

    Air

Great band. Fortunately I had the opportunity to see them live on two occasions in London. Ragtime on the baritone at one of the concerts. Plus the hubcap wall (thanks Chuck for pointing out that the hubcap phone is somethimng different). All their records are worth having but I wouldn't like to pick a favourite. I liked New Air less, not quite the same on record at least.
  17. I have it on vinyl. If there are no other offers and you can be patient I can probably do you a copy.
  18. UK date is supposed to be 4 October but I wouldn't bet on it. It's advertised in the UK jazz press so it can't be too far off.
  19. I've always enjoyed "Live in Japan '84" on DIW and "Live in Berlin" on West Wind.
  20. A nice way to sample the Consecration box with out a major cash outlay is to get the three cds on Timeless - "Consecration 1 and 2" and "The Brilliant". No repeated pieces. I have them in a box but they come as single cds too, or did.
  21. I don't know about it. I tried episode one but it seemed a poor show to me compared to the original. I don't think the magic of the original can be recreated despite a few old names in the cast list. Maybe I'll warm to it. Marvin was the paranoid android.
  22. Have a very happy birthday Ronald. And very many more. Best wishes John
  23. Ernie's straight ahead recordings are fine with me. All his JVC cds worth a listen. In a similar vein there's a nice but easily overlooked cd by Bob Leatherbarrow with Watts "Bumpin' in the Basement" on Chartmaker.
