  1. Soulful and solid but not up to King Curtis' Prestige dates "The New Scene Of King Curtis" and "Soul Meeting". If you liked Moore and don't have these I think you'll like them.
  2. I don't think there's any record of Miles playing Milestones before 1963. Perhaps this is the version with George Coleman, Herbie, Ron and Tony from that year? Guy My guess is that Guy is right. This also came out on Bandstand so it seems like a likely candidate. To help check, this version is listed as being 9 mins 12 seconds long.
  3. You might find it worthwhile to check out some of the things on Bimnney's own Mythology label. I particularly enjoyed "La Bikina" by Ed Simon which features Binney and Mark Turner.
  4. I have both the Standards DVDs. Both are excellent.
  5. I've not been there for a while and failed to renew my mailing list request so I'm out of touch but this sounds pretty bad. New Note took a stake in the business a while back which gave them a useful outlet but with all the original partners gone it could be a real possibility that the end is nigh. For those whose memory goes back far enough, I always felt that the down slide started when Graham Griffiths left to start New Note. I haven't seen him for some time but last time I came across him he was unwell. I wish him well.
  6. Is there an AOTW for this week? I hope this very enjoyable thread is not running out of steam. I'm happy to nominate a disc if no-ones been tagged.
  7. Adam, You are thinking of Plymouth I think. Portsmouth is another naval city, we have Nelson and HMS Victory. Not much in the way of anything else though.
  8. Mostly piano today John Hicks; Some Clark Bars Bill Evans; Complete on Verve disc 1. Bill Evans; The Brilliant D D Jackson; Suite For New York
  9. If you get down to see the the sights(actually there are some!) in Portsmouth I'll buy you a beer. You shouldn't miss the Tate Gallery and Tate Modern for modern art. The British Museum is worth a visit. The London Eye is recommended too.
  10. Not a lot to add to Lon's comments. Lucie gets an entry in The New Grove Dictionary. Born on 18 December 1907. The last mention is with the NY Jazz Repetory Company in the 70s.
  11. Not forgotten here, I was playing "Blue Spring" yesterday.
  12. I'm all jazz too. I find that if I need a change I'll change the style of jazz I listen too. I might go from say, Coltrane/Ornette back to early bebop for a spell. Then after a while I'll feel like going back to hard bop and so it goes. The thing is I never get tired of jazz and nothing I've ever heard gives quite the same kick.
  13. Yes, years ago I won Stanley Turrentine's "La Place" cd from London station Jazz FM. I clalled in about 7.00am on a Boxing Day morning, I guess I was the only person listening. I traded it in after a while.
  14. Bud Powell; Volume 2 Bill Cunliffe; Bill Plays Bud Miles Davis; Jack Johnson Curtis Amy;Mosaic Select
  15. Definitely. What about that funky organ!!
  16. I'm not a big fan of sonic upgrades but this one is well worthwhile, a big improvement over the last cd issue and extra tracks as well. I find this cd a delight from start to finish. Bud's movingly emotional on the ballads, warm on the medium tempos (Audrey) and sparkling on the uptempo pieces. I like the mambo lilt he gives to "I've got you under my skin", and I can always listen to fine tunes like "Autumn in New York" and "Polka dots..." A fine session.
  17. Seems to have been a good year for reissues rather than new issues. Best new issue by far was Martial Solal; NY1-Live At The Village Vanguard. Runners up Albert Ayler; The Copenhagen Tapes. Gerry Hemingway; Devil's Paradise. Reissues Sonny Clark Trio; (Audio Fidelity) Albet Ayler; Nuits de la Fondation Maeght Miles Davis; In Person at the Blackhawk Carmell Jones; Mosaic Select Still to hear "Passing Ships", my first copy wouldn't play. I suspect the Curtis Amy Mosaic Select will score highy too.
  18. Curtis Amy set just delivered.
  19. As well as "Europa Jazz" there was another very similar series titled "I Giganti Del Jazz". As Jim says the label is a real mess. Live dates, often lifted from elsewhere mixed with material that is far from common. These were budget issues but I see that they are beginning to show up on auction lists now. I'd be surprised if there has been no research into the label. The only ones I have are a Jimmy Ponder Trio plus one with two tracks by a Max Roach Sextet coupled with a cut each by Art Blakey and Horace Silver which I believe are straight lifts from Blue Note.
  20. My guess is that it was contractual. Reciprocal arrangements for swapping contracted artists for occasional dates were not that unusual.
  21. Mosaic told me that the Amy set will ship Friday 28 th Nov.
  22. Neither am I EKE, it's a nice thing to have and I refer to it frequently.
  23. Whoops, sorry Brownie I thought this was next week's AOTW and commented on "Way Out" instead. I'll give this one a spin asap.
  24. Thanks for that Adrian, I forgot about Edinburgh.
  25. Tony, yes "Loose Blue" was included. No cds openly on sale. I don't believe the South Bank encouage it. It probably upsets the people who have the record selling concession. John
