  1. Apart from the Carmell Jones set I pretty much knew what to expect, all of it good. The Jones set is absolutely wonderful being the biggest surprise. But the Curtis Amy set runs it a close second despite being familiar with a lot of the music. The Green set is a masterpiece but as I have all the music on lp or TOCJs I didn't go for it. I didn't go for the Duke Pearson ( I have the vinyl and nice though it is it's always sounded a bit lightweight compared with the rest of the catalogue). Bud Shank too I did without, again because I had so much on record.
  2. For what it's worth I've ordered through the website and it's worked fine (and quick) for me. Though to save on shipping I usually wait until there's at least three I want.
  3. Those that do it for me are the trio albums on Contemporary, Vols 1, 2 and 3.
  4. I don't know about the Coleman Catesta, but I think you'll love the Clay cd. A very nice programme of standards.
  5. Very occaisionally I use the random play function. Usually when the cd has a lot of tracks and I want to sample the artist. Programming more often, to alter the sequence to hear alternates together or just to omit certain tracks.
  6. I have several of the early US OJC pressings manufactured before the onset of cds. These sound fine to me and the pressing quality is good. That said I've not done any A-B comparisons with the equivalent cds.
  7. Another spin on this is that several UK couriers are now charging for a repeat delivery if the addressee is out first time round. This can vary between £3.00 and £10.00.
  8. The last day or so I find I'm having to log in every time I visit the board. The only change I've made is adding the Google toolbar, with pop up stopper, to my browser. It's just a tad irritating. Any ideas?
  9. It says something for these guys that they can stretch out at such length and make it sound interesting all the way through.
  10. I didn't want to be too early. It's 4.40 in the UK. One year today WOW. Thanks Jim, Joe and Randy for this great board.
  11. I've had this one since it first came out as part of a "Blue Note Classics" double lp. I couldn't have made a big impression at the time as it's sat on the shelf ever since. I get the Conn, a few weeks ago and I just got around to giving it a couple of spins. My first impression was seriously wrong. This is a great session, maybe it's because of the heavyweight band or perhaps it's that the compositions are above average. Whatever it's fine and maybe the best of Lee's later sesions.
  12. Fine by me, it's a fine cd.
  13. If you are interesred in west coast jazz then Ted Gioia's "West Coast Jazz" is an excellent read. It's a serious work but easy to read. It certainly sent me back to my record collection.
  14. Did Definitive ever care? Posted here by the way because of the Mosaic connection.
  15. Mike, but Pony Express is something else if my memory isn't too hazy.
  16. Just spotted a 2cd set listed in the Crazy Jazz March supplement that Definitive are doing a Clark/Defranco "The Complete Sessions" . Another rip off, but, interesting nonetheless. Also listed on the same label is Serge Chaloff's "Boston Blow Up/Blue Serge". Don't know about the alternates.
  17. I've just received the Mosaic Tristano/Konitz/Marsh box. The declared value is $30.00. Borderline for charging. If I'm charged I'll get an invoice in a few days from the couriers. There is never any indication at the time of delivery. My experience with USPS airmail parcel service has been good, delivery normally within a week.
  18. May I ask why you find it disappointing? I enjoy Pony very much! Short tunes, not particularly suited to jazz interpretations. Pony doesn't dig too deep and there's too much of an easy listening feel to most of it. My opinion only, Mike
  19. Here's the entry from Lord Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (ts) acc by Michel Attenoux Orchestra , : Patrick Artero (tp) Claude Gousset (tb) Michel Attenoux (as) Gabriel Garvanoff (p) Jean-Pierre Mulot (B) Teddy Martin (d) Antibes, July 24, 1975 Splanky Mahogany (F)558104 Moonlight in Vermont - Gee baby, ain't I good to you ? - Flying home - What am I here for ? - What's new ? - Midnite blues - Lush life - Shiny stockings - Note: All above titles also on Storyville STCD5009 [CD].
  20. Have a good one Big Al
  21. Agreed then, that's a real bummer.
  22. You are right. I wish I had your self control.
  23. Sorry Deus, but that's the way it is. Local taxes are payable for items valued over a certain amount plus a handling fee. They are still due even if sent by surface post but, in the UK at least surface items stand a better chance of getting through customs without charge. Even so I still go for speed.
  24. Thanks for that Stefan, very helpful.
  25. An interesting topic as I seem to have missed this cd entirely. I have the BGP reissue of "Plays The Big Ones" and "Gumbo", but find it rather disappointing. My question is how are the Young/Ervin tracks? Should I buy on the strength of these.
