    Albert Ayler

Nice thread Gary, thanks. Always good to hear more about Ayler. The London concert was perhaps my most most memorable jazz evening. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have heard him in the flesh.

    Julius Hemphill

"Geogia Blue" by the JAH Band on Minor Music comes to mind as memorable album. One to dust off and play.
  3. I guess I'll sign up before long. As David Ayers has said we need a place to vent our feelings and get our view across. There doesn't seem any other avenue open to us to do this. I can't see myself going there very often though.
  4. I notice that two of the Feb 17 tracks, "Out Of The Blue" and "Tempus Fugit" appear on Charley/Le Jazz Cd 45 - Miles Davis at The Royal Roost 1948 and Birdland 1950, 51, 53.
  5. Here's what Lord says Chuck Foster (tp) Hank Bagby (ts) Dave Mackay (p) Al Hines (bass) Charles "Chiz" Harris (d) New York, 1964 Dee dee Protone PLP133 The great wall - Kiss me Quigley - Iborian - Algerian suite -
  6. If I have a nice copy of the lp then I keep it. If the cd has extra music then I'll go for the cd.
  7. I'd like to put a good word in for all of Danko's Steeplechase outings. Those I have, quartets playing established jazz pieces have all been very rewarding.
  8. Cover VG+????
  9. Larry Goldings, bet known as an organist has several piano recordings out. Just played Tom Browne's "Another Shade Of Brown"with Goldings at the piano a few minutes ago.

    Malachi Favors

This is so sad, we'll all miss him terribly.
  11. I managed to find time to give this one a paly at last. A really nice solid session. There is so much consistent Green from this period I find it hard to name a favourite. But this one wont disappoint. The beer(?) bottle rolling across the floor during "God Bless The Child" is a nice touch.
  12. Today Miles Davis; The Complete Concert 1964 Ahmad Jamal; Cross Country Tour Grant Green; Sunday Morning
  13. A cd by this band sounds interesting, a nice companion to Herwig's "Latin Side Of John Coltrane".
  14. Don't hesitate, it's all fine and nice punchy sound too (imo).
  15. Sorry for the poor quality of my "Stretching Out" image, but at least you get the idea.
  16. Great news about a Farlow box. Definitely one to look forward to. As it's Verve material us Europeans may get a good deal again. Maybe the Reece will include "The Flip"
  17. A lucky find Flurin, I heard the Ornette piece on the radio some years ago and wanted it ever since.
  18. My old Technics player which I guess may be just slightly older than yours began to develop occasional random skips. I imagine it could have been checked over by a decent engineer and possibly restored. But it's had an awful lot of use during that time. Now it's retired and replaced by a younger, and better model. Having moving parts suggests to me that these things have a limited life and replacement may be better and cheaper than repair. I found that those cleaning cds didn't have any effect.
  19. CD received yesterday, thanks. After one play through I have to own up to being more than a tad disappointed, it's certainly varied though. Maybe it was the choice of tracks but I didn't find very much to interest me but I was glad of the chance to sample this music. On a more positive note, I've been able to listen to Colin Steele's "The Journey Home" cd in its entirety. It's very extremely pleasant, easy to listen to and has a lot of charm. Steele has a lovely slightly smokey tone and gets off some nice melodic solos. I think I might find the more obvious folk elements a bit wearing after a while though. The folk elements are accentuated by the soprano sax, which adds a bagpipe drone here and there and I would have preferred some more from Arguelles soft toned tenor. Pianist Milligan and drummer Rae are both impressive. In all a record worth trying out, more than just something for the curious
  20. I shouldn't expect any new issues from Candid. Alan was saying that sales of some titles had been terrible. However it does indicate that the Candid archives need researching.
  21. Thanks for the update Brad.
  22. Tough choice as they are all worthwhile and valuable. Difficult to choose a favourite in the circumstances but I guess "Katanga" gets the most plays.
  23. I was talking to Alan Bates, the owner of the Candid tapes, a few months ago. He said that he had some unissued Candid material, particularly by Jaki Byard (solo). Maybe there's more.
  24. In his notes to the box set Keepnews mentions that the mike set up was changed after "So Do It". Jim R, I'd pretty much agree that "Ghost of a chance" is a one of the high spots here.
