  1. Is this the one with Tommy Turrentine and others reminiscing amongst other things? If so pretty disapointing stuff.
  2. John - it looks like it should be easier to find this year http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0...7019187-6831062 I'll join you in the queue Thanks for that Gary, nice one. After my holiday now though,
  3. William Parker; Scrapbook Art Ensemble of Chicago; Tribute To Lester Thelonious Monk; It's Monk's Time Jimmy Woods; Conflict
  4. You will probably be disappointed. Shepp sounds a lot different these days, nothing like the adventurous playing of the 60s. I've only seen him three times since his heyday, twice very lacklustre but a more recent duo date with Andrew Hill was much more interesting-perhaps he needed Hill to spur him on. kh, I think I'd give him a miss.
  5. What can I say about this album. It's one of the two most influential albums in my jazz listening. When it first came out (was it really nearly 40 years ago, seems hard to believe) I'd never heard anything quite like it, I was hooked, and it opened a lot of new listening avenues. Right from the off it's great, the band sound, the interplay, the backing riffs, the solos, Shorters fragilty and Tchicai's fractured sound, Shepp's gruffness and abandon, Rudd was/is a revelation and stunning work from Worman and Moffett. A group of real originals imo. When I play the disc now I know what's coming next but it still comes as a surprise. An exceptional recording. I went on to seek out the records by the NY Contemporay 5, Marion Brown, and the NY Art Quartet, Shepp and Dixon on Savoy. Some of these are almost as good and are still among the most cherished records in my collection.
  6. Great choice, I'll look forward to spinning these again.
  7. Still having problems today. Getting a mail not sent error message.
  8. I thought this was about cricket for a moment!
  9. I quite like the idea, I'm not a vinyl freak although I have an awful lot (according to my wife). On the other hand the number of forums is growing and could get out of hand. Best count me as "don't know".
  10. The Mulligan and Chambers for me. I'll be happy to get the "High Step" material on cd. I can make do with my Patton vinyl and cds.
  11. The Mulligan and Chambers for me. I'll be happy to get the "High Step" material on cd. I can make do with my Patton vinyl and cds.
  12. I can also recommend the Al Grey. Just discovered I have seven tracks from the sessions on an Italian 2lp set. Al Grey doesn't hog the limelight, Billy Mitchell and Bobby Hutcherson get plenty of solo space too. An excellent set.
  13. Congratuations
  14. THANK YOU JIM
  15. Fine cd.
  16. Hal McKusick; Now's The Time ( a favourite of mine) Wynton Kely/Lee Morgan; Dizzy Atmosphere (love the opening track) D D Jackson; Suite For New York Peter Erskine; Sweet Soul Slide Hampton; Exodus Grand Central;Tenor Conclave
  17. Ah well, never mind. Great fun, thanks Dan and Gary.
  18. And a nice bunch of Hatology cds at 4.99 Euros.
  19. I've just spent a fun morning with Gary who kindly copied his cd for me. There's some great music here so whatever the answers it was a fine listen. I've not looked at this thread until today either. Track 1, No idea Track 2, was straight forward enough, JJ Track 3, on Riverside maybe, Griffin? Track 4, should have been so easy, what an embarrassment. Track 5, Richie Kamuca came to mind, probably not though. Someone mentioned Tubby Hayes, could be but sounds more structured to me. Track 6, Should have got this one. Track 7, A Kirkish flourish, sounds like it might be from Prestige, Alan Dawson on drums? Track 8, Grappelli?? Track 9, Really nice, no idea. Track 10, No idea; Joe Henderson? Track 11, No idea Track 12, A change of pace, not Hutcherson. I'll go for Jay Hoggard Track 13, First thought, Garbarek, second thought Dave Liebman. Great fun, now to see the results. Whoops missed off track 14, Monk's tune, Chick Corea springs to mind as he's done some Monk in the past, didn't sound like his phrasing though.
  20. Thanks for your comments so far. More please. Phoenix is new to me. I'll certainly be trying the chillis but I'll be careful around those jalapenos and habeneros. But it's a big state, loads to see and I don't want to miss the best places.
  21. A big yea from me too, though the title track tends to run out of steam, otherwise it's prime Rollins.
  22. We'll be visiting Arizona again at the end of the month and into early October. We've been to Flagstaff before but despite being snowed in some of the time managed to get the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sedona and more. We'll want to head back there in better weather but what are the essential places we need to try to see in the south of the state to get a real taste of the west. Thanks in advance.
  23. VINYL Cedar Walton/Hank Mobley; Breakthrough Richard Kamuca; Quartet 1976 CD Steve Turre; One4J Nat Adderley;Little Big Horn Donald Byrd/Doug Watkins; The Transition Sessions D D Jackson; Suite For New York
  24. Ah, the good old days, I remember the feeling of discovery only too well. I'm a lot older now, the collection's a lot bigger and the real surprises and thrill's are are getting few and far between.
