  1. Silent Tongues on Freedom was Down Beat record of the year in 1975 and might be a solo album worth investigating. I don't particularly care for it. Alan Bates who produced and recorded the date says he couldn't understand the accolade but I'm sure he appreciated it
  2. RT, I have it on vinyl though.
  3. I hope it's not going to be one of those that gets overlooked or delayed for months. You can't rely on the European licensees, they don't seem to have any discernable strategy or release policy as far as I can tell.
  4. Thanks Gary, I was there an hour or so ago, they weren't there then.
  5. Thanks couw, that's great. I'm grateful. Don't you just hate it when you don't recognise something. I have the Spotlite lps. I guess I'm getting too old to make the mental leap from Tristano to Ulanov
  6. I'm intruiged now, I can't find any details of these Tristano tracks-can someone kindly post the personnel, date and location please.
  7. Didn't I have this on a Bandstand cd? I sold it a while ago but I'm sure I have the Tristano tracks elsewhere. I'll have to dig a bit deeper..... After a dig around I think the Bandstand cd may have had the Davis/Konitz band with John Lewis from the Royal Roost in 1948.
  8. His cd Pointless Nostalgic sums him up for me. Pointless especially.
  9. Thanks for the recommendation for the Babs Lon. I was only thinking about it the other day after listening to Three Bips and a Bop and to Babs with Bennie Green. I didn't know it had resurfaced.
  10. I agree with kinuta, the Barron disc is pretty dull, a set of bossas, all short with no real room for blowing at the simliar tempos. Very disappointing. Fortunately Fresh Sound have also released Now Here This with Barron and Ted Curson a much better buy which redresses the balance.
  11. This is a great place, let me add my thanks too, well done Jim.
  12. Last weekend's meeting was pretty rewarding. It's true that about 90 percent of those present (about 25, not a bad number considering the British membership) were mainly interested in swing and big bands, not necessarily white bands though. The presentations were varied and covered AFRS recordings, black British swing and most interesting for me a talk by Alan Bates on aquiring the Candid label and it's music. On the strength of the meeting I'll be renewing my membership this year.
  13. Brad, You can have mine. PM me if interested. John
  14. Any of these will suit me as they are in my collection in one form or another. When it comes to buying it could be a bit tricky, in the UK it's not always easy to get hold of a disc in reasonable time.
  15. Good news, thanks for the heads up about the alternates. A possible for recording of the week?

    Bennie Maupin

The top man on bass clarinet has got to be David Murray. But back to Maupin. I saw him with Jack Dejohnette a few years back and he didn't make much of an impression, maybe it was an off night. In the studio he's more disciplined and generally sounds fine.
  17. Ordered today.

    Teddy Edwards, RIP

Sad news. I saw him here a few years back, a very nice approachable guy.
  19. Thanks for the suggestion Bernard, John Patton is fine with me, as is Tina Brooks.
  20. Today- Gerry Mulligan; Midas Touch Chris Lightcap; Lay-Up World Saxophone Quartet; 25th Anniversary
  21. Don't know much about the Water label but they did reissue Albert Ayler's Nuits de la Fondation Maeght. Both lps on one cd and made a pretty good job of it.
  22. Did anyone mention Marion Brown; Capricorn Moon, ESP 1022. With Alan Shorter, Bennie Maupin etc, one of my favourite ESPs.
  23. That's a shame. I was just getting to like them, they seemed to offer a good service from my limited experience. I wondered why I didn't get a mailing.
  24. My views entirely BeBop. I love early Lee Morgan, early Byrd too. All that youthful enthusiasm.
  25. I have "Year Of The Elephant", as it's usually good to hear Wadada and he's fine in this supergroup setting. I've not tried the Threadgill's as his Columbia recordings were not been to my taste. I'm curious about the Pis though.
