  1. This fine cd could easily be overlooked, I didn't obtain it untill recently despite knowing of it 4 star rating in Penguin and AMG. This is superb Hill, the music here is very approachable, even playful at times with strong tunes. Clifford Jordan sounds as though he were made for this band and Rufus Reid and Ben Riley back it up beautifully. If you enjoy Hill and don't know this cd seek it out. If you are unsure about Hill this might be the place to start
  2. Playing now on minidisc-sounds good to me.
  3. Ditto
  4. What is there to say about this music? It thrilled me 45 years ago when I first heard it. It does the same now. This one would be on my desert island. It's not a major point but I prefer the undoctored version. Everyone should have this.
  5. I like The Magnificent Thad Jones (BN 1527) and Benny Green's Back On Tne Scene. It's something about evoking the period.
  6. I love Lester Bowie. This was taken at the first London concert by The AEOC. The atmosphere was electric, the music wonderful. The photograph taken by a young student of photography is a nice reminder of a really memorable evening.
  7. I have Thomas Fitterling slim-ish volume. It's in three parts, a biography which I'll own up to not yet reading, a short segment on his music, the final half of the book is a detailed look at each of Monk's recordings. As a reference to Monk's recordings I'd say it was an asset to my book shelf.
  8. Sidewinder, what a great opportunity. I remember Hill with Reggie Workman and Pheeroan AkLaff doing a pre-concert question and answer in London a few years back. Interesting but not very illuminating.
  9. It has to be Sonny Clark, so many fine sessions graced with his exceptional touch and elegance.
  10. I thought all this was a thing of the past these days. The only thing I recall on my car was to brake gently at first. But I still tend to take things easy all the time!!
  11. Gary, Doesn't that mean you have another £359 to spend.
  12. When I first heard Wynton live I thought this guy can really play. But after listening to two or three of his earlier recordings under his own name I couldn't find much in his playing that hadn't been done before by Miles, Woody Shaw or Freddie Hubbard. And why are some of his compositions so "difficult/clever"?
  13. I don't think so, the numbers on my sets (all pre-ordered) seem random, Weston,537; Moncur, 41; Jones, 628. Whatever, it appears to be encouraging as far as sales are concerned.
  14. Rand Weston Mosaic Select disc 1 George Russell: At The Five Spot Freddie Hubbard; Blue Spirits Dizzy Gillespie; Perceptions Keith Jarrett; Up For It
  15. I haven't heard any of them
  16. I agree with JohnJ. Penguin is my first point of call then AMG on line. They both have their uses.
  17. I did think that maybe I should enquire if anyone else on the board was going-next concert I'll do that.
  18. Andrew played in London last night. It was a big band gig but he brought along Ron Horton, Gregory Tardy, John Hebert and Nasheet Waits, at least they were billed, no-one was introduced. The rest of the big band was made up with british guys. Considering they were relatively unfamilar with the charts it went down well. I would have liked to have heard a little more of Hill's piano and maybe a number by the quintet. The bass and drums were particularly effective, especially behind Hill.
  19. They've arrived in the UK, at least mine has. Can't believe that I'll be listening to two discs with Coleman Hawkins in one week. It could become a habit.
  20. I'll try it again, if it's there I want to hear it.
  21. John, sent you a PM. I'll also strongly recommend Johnny's Corner Song.

    Martial Solal

Thanks sal, I hadn't come across this not visiting the BNBB. As the other recent Solal trios have been fine I'll be getting this when it surfaces this side of the pond.
  23. Thanks for the info JAW, another one for the pick up list.
  24. John, If you can't find the originals I can burn the first two on your list. Incidentally I just spotted a new or upcoming Hemingway; Devil's Paradise on Clean Feed. Haven't located a source yet. John
  25. Aggie Glad there's a cd store in Bruges, I hope we will time to find it, though my wife usually does her best to steer me away from them. We had a short stay in Brussels last November. Record shops were pretty thin on the ground there, but then I was probably looking in the wrong place. John
