Organissimo...AAJ Polital dumping ground?
AfricaBrass replied to Soul Stream's topic in Forums Discussion
Life was simpler then, but I really like it here. This is such a great board. I prefer the board software in every way to the BNBB. I think the most difficult task we face here is getting the word out about the Organissimo forum. Just as BN had a built in way of getting new people to their board, AAJ will continue to attract new board members. I tried to spread the word over at AAJ, but I realized that I was only posting over there to tell people about this board. So I stopped doing it. I just hope this board will grow and grow and..... :rsmile: :rsmile: -
I agree! Those Fantasy twofers are a great deal. I'm glad they're continuing that type of reissue. It would be really great if they did what Collectables has been doing and put the full size (cd size) cover image in the booklet. I have to admit, I haven't purchased very many Fantasy cds in the last couple years. Since they put their stuff on emusic, I've been downloading their albums instead. It's a shame, though, because the their mp3s don't sound that great. I think having the mp3s available made me think the cds were less valuable. I spent the majority of my money on BN and their reissues. I am so grateful that BN acted the way they did. It has made me open my wallet up for other labels. :rsmile: :rsmile:

Recommend sessions with Chu Berry please & thanks
AfricaBrass replied to LarryCurleyMoe's topic in Recommendations
Verve put out a cd of Coleman Hawkins and Chu Berry called Tenor Giants a couple years ago. This cd features material recorded for Commodore records. I would pick this one up if you don't already have it. -
I was never a huge fan of the covers either. It was a cool series, though. One of my favorites in this series is the Red Holloway title. Overall, I've been happy with all the cds that I've heard in this series (about 12 so far). :rsmile:

Organissimo...AAJ Polital dumping ground?
AfricaBrass replied to Soul Stream's topic in Forums Discussion
Thanks Soul Stream! Like Jim, I consider this board home too. I just think it's going to get better and better. It's nice that we have a place to share our feelings in this difficult time. I think this is the perfect home for the BNBB refuges. AAJ was already settled when we arrived, this board was created just for us. I hope everyone who's lurking or just checking this board out, will jump in the pool with us. This board is what WE make of it, good or bad. I can't thank B3-er and Use3d enough for all their hard work on our behalf. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile: And we've got roboticons here! -
It was a hoot watching the Oscars. I enjoyed watching everybody try to hold back. You could see how much pain they were in not getting to say anything. When I saw Michael Moore win, I knew it was going to be good. I bet the academy was squirming all night knowing that he was going to get a chance to get up there. I was just waiting for the big hook to come out.

Thanks impossible! I still haven't picked up anything yet. I haven't forgot. I think I'll start with the newer stuff. I love harmonies and more instruments. :rsmile:

Thanks Noj!

That's funny shit. There's a Yusef Lateef song called "Destination Paradise" that has this really slow bass line intro and upon hearing it a friend of mine asked, "What is this heroin music we're listening to?" I love slow mellow stuff just as much as I love fast stuff, but I could see what he was saying. I need to track down that Yusef Lateef song. What really makes the Shepp song weird for me is the rhodes with the tremelo on it mixed with those crazy Charles Ive's-like strings. Then the singing starts. I don't have a chance. At least the next song is upbeat. It has a nice groove. I do like this album. I'm glad I picked it up.

Right now: Archie Shepp's Attica Blues - track 5: Steam Part 2 This album really makes me feel like I'm on drugs when I listen to it. The strings on this track have a narcotic quality to them. I respect the sentiments they're trying to convey here, but it's a weird album. Not really jazz. :rsmile: :rsmile:

When I started listening to jazz, Mingus Ah Um was the third jazz album I bought. It's weird that we don't talk about Mingus more. If I was a newbie, I might might miss out on this powerful music. To me, he is a giant. The music on Mingus Ah Um is so alive. That's one thing I love about Mingus, you feel the music in your bones. One of my favorite Mingus albums is Oh Yeah on Atlantic with our friend Booker and Roland Kirk. I used to listen to that all the time. :rsmile:

Add me to the list of Booker Ervin fans. I was lucky to introduced to Booker early on in my jazz initiation. I discovered him through his work with Charles Mingus. It's still some of my favorite jazz. I agree with the recommendation of "That's It" - It is a great album. I also have and enjoy some of the albums he recorded for Prestige. The whole "Book" series is highly recommended. I'm amazed he isn't more well known.

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
It's nice to read your thoughts, Red and Paul. I'm really enjoying this album. I've had it on all day. I've really warmed up to the instrument combination. It's really nice getting a chance to digest the music. I went for a long time buying so many cds, I didn't get a chance to know all of them. It's helping me get really excited about jazz again. I too, look forward to this thread continuing. I hope it does. :rsmile: -
How does this set compare to the Capital Teagarden set. Is it more jazz, or is it varied like the Capital set?

My local Tower has the Smith in stock. I'd love to hear what you think of it when you get a chance. Thanks! :rsmile:

I like that old cartoon with Owl Jolson. You know, the one where he wanted to be a crooner, but his father and brothers were all classical singers. I love to singa... About the moona and juna and springa... -
Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
This is a nice date. I've never been a big fan of the song "Witchcraft", but when they get past the theme and open up it's really nice. I have been enjoying Rouse's contribution. I can see why some might not like Adams, but I like the interplay and colors that this combination brings. Back to listening. :rsmile: -
One more thing. I've mentioned this before, but if you have a high speed connection, there is a program called Furthurnet. It's a free peer-to-peer filing sharing software. They only trade live shows of bands or artists who approve of file sharing. I'm mentioning this right now because there are 3 live Charlie Hunter shows up there right now. They have some other jazz, but it's usually the MMW type of stuff. Furthurnet Website

I dig hunter too. I'll be picking up his new cd. BN seems to have their heads up their.... I wish I could do what he does on guitar. I don't know if he still has his website, but he used to have downloadable mp3s on it. He had 3 cds worth. Good stuff!

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Pig Lib
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I picked up the reissue a few months ago. It's a nice package. Truth be told, I never owned the cd until this version so I don't know if the remastering is an improvement or not. I think my favorite Pavement album is Brighten the Corners. Maybe it's the fact that parts of it remind me of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. I've been listening to Pig Lib for a couple days and I like it more and more. I hate to admit it, but I'm enjoying this more than Pavement. I was never a fan of Spiral Stairs' songs, so I don't have to skip over them. I'm also impressed by the guitar work on this new album. There are places where they get into the realm of Captain Beefheart with their playing. I've been listening to 1% of One over and over. I also like the song Animal Midnight. It's nice to see Malkmus going to a different place than Pavement. As to Saint Vitus' question: I have no idea, but I haven't read anything or seen anything to make me think that this is the same fellow. Just a guess. :rsmile: -
Welcome Nutty! Don't just lurk, join in on the fun!

I saw "Where the Buffalo Roam" when I was a kid. I loved Bill Murray on SNL. I remember being really confused. Later, after reading Thompson's works and having made a few trips to Vegas "Fear and Loathing" style, if get my drift. It made sense. I tried to watch the Terry Gilliam "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" film with my wife. If I had a nickel for everytime she said, "This movie is stupid" during it, I would have a Mosaic set on the way. After an hour of her complaining I gave up. They did a good job capturing the high as a kite Vegas experience. Ah, the folly of youth.

Great topic! I would love to have been at: Armstrong's Hot Fives session(s) Minton's Playhouse during the birth of bop. Eddie Condon's Town Hall Concerts in the 40's Coltrane's Ascension studio session (The OM session would be good too) I'll force myself to stop, I could list at least 100 things.
