Thanks Ed! I look forward to getting to know this music better. :rsmile:

Is this that super rare Tyrone Washington LP?
AfricaBrass replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I haven't heard The Pinch yet, but I'll make sure I do. What a GREAT cover! Damn political correctness! I have to say that the greatest use of backup singers is on the track, Flat Tire, on I Wanna Get Funky. I laugh every time I hear it. If I could be as cool as Albert King for just one minute, I could die a happy man. -
I don't know if he's been mentioned, but I was listening to Elvis Costello this morning and I thought of this thread. If anyone is looking for live Hendrix, they should check out Furthurnet.org, I believe his estate approves of trading live recordings. I've downloaded a bunch. :rsmile:

It's spring and a young man's attention turns to..

I'm in California too, so I miss out on the seasons. When I listen to Delius or Vaughan Williams, I do get the feeling of how an English spring might feel. I really enjoy that music. Speaking of seasonal music: Is anyone a fan of Vaughan Williams "Hodie"? I love listening to that at Christmas. :rsmile: -
Wasn't Chet Atkins one of the architects of the Nashville sound? I have to admit that I have developed a fondness for those Billy Sherrill overproduced George Jones records from the mid-seventies like The Grand Tour. :rsmile:

Peter, Speaking of Albert King: Have you heard the I Wanna Get Funky album? It's not his best stuff, but it's fun. I do dig King's Stax period. Very good stuff! I also like synths at times. I just don't like when a great player makes a disco record. If I want disco, I'll listen to the Bee Gees. Have I mentioned that Criss album is AWFUL? -
Thanks! I think I'm going to check my local used record store and see if I can find any of this stuff on vinyl. Those ECM reissues are EXPENSIVE! :rsmile:

Actually, Places and Spaces is MUCH better than Warm & Sonny. I like most of the Byrd rare groove reissues. I probably shouldn't have used that as a reference. Warm & Sonny is just BAD. Not the good kind of bad, but the bad kind of bad. There are good reasons why some albums don't get reissued. -
I think I need to be more open-minded. Any other suggestions for a Metheny newbie?

I remember that Definitive was doing that, so I ceased buying anything from them. That would be a real drag if JSP is doing that. If it is true, I wouldn't feel right buying their product. It does seem weird that they would do so after they had established a reputation of quality using remasters by J.R.T. Davis and such.

I don't mean to come across all negative. I really do thing that new release looks interesting. I'll probably pick it up. :rsmile:

Joe, Actually I'm refering to Speaking of Now (after I got Missouri Sky, I picked that up, too). I really like the Missouri Sky cd. I'm listening to the Speaking of Now and it must be the Synclavier. I've never been a fan of synthesizers in jazz. Organs - YES! :rsmile: Synths - NO! There is some really good music there, but I just have to get past my biases.

Very nice CD!! I'll second that! -
I've bought a few of those Red Garland dates for Prestige. I know they're just jam sessions, but every one that I have heard have been highly enjoyable.
-
That looks really interesting. I've always thought those old baritone guitars were cool. Joe, I've been listening to the Metheny you suggested. I enjoy his phrasing quite a bit. What I have a problem with is the production of the music. I bet a solo recording would be right up my alley. :rsmile:

I always forget how much I enjoy Parlan. Almost everytime I play one of his albums, I think to myself, "Why don't I listen to him more?" I've already got half the stuff available on the Mosaic and I've been waiting until it's time starts to run out. Now I'm thinking, how can I get this set (and the Donald Byrd too)? I'll say this again, hanging out here is expensive!

I've got a few boxes by both labels. From my experience, the JSP boxes usually sound better, but the Proper sets have the nice booklets, while the JSP sets don't. The JSP's that I have a really like are the: Louis Armstrong - I probably would get the Sony set if the price was the same. The 2 Django sets - I really enjoy these two. Eddie Condon - It's a nice overview for the money. It's more like a Proper set in the song selection. It's an overview instead of complete recordings. The Mills Brothers - That's a neat set. Great value for the money. It's 5 cds of Mills Brothers. The Proper's that I have are: Woody Herman - This seems like a good introduction, and for the price I'm happy. I don't know if there are better source materials out there for this music, though. Doughboys, Playboys, and Cowboys - This is a great introduction to western swing music. I really like it and highly recommend it. I would like to get more Proper's sets. I think they're perfect if you're exploring artists and you don't have much by them. They're not going to satisfy those who already have everything by an artist, but they're a nice intro. If you're open to different styles, such as country, I would highly recommend the JSP Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers sets. I haven't got them yet (I have most of the material from other sources), but for the price they are amazing deals. I'm curious about the JSP Goodman and Dorsey sets myself, any comments?

This reminds me of the time I found a copy of Sonny Criss' rare Warm & Sonny album on Impulse. I was really excited because I really dig Criss and I like his Muse recordings from this period. So I get my record and put it on the turntable.. Oh horror!!!! It's that Mizell crap like Donald Byrd's Places and Spaces. Not Criss, I couldn't believe it. Now I'm kind of weary about rare records from the '70s. -
Nominations for future "albums of the week"
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
I think Berkshire Record Outlet still has Tolliver's Grand Max for $2.98. I picked up my copy a while ago. I really like Tolliver. I have a couple of his Strata East titles on cd and enjoy them. Berkshire Record Outlet I think the Tolliver is item #24 I also wanted to say that I really like Dan's idea of a cd tree. I do a lot of trading of live music and this is a very common practice. :rsmile: -

Rooster, I'm glad you like the nominating system. I just figured it would be the easiest way. I agree with Paul and would also like to see other labels represented. It's cool that's next week's Mingus cd will be an Impulse title. So it looks like CJ Shearn chose the album of the week for April 13-19 and that is: Lee Morgan - Live at the Lighthouse. So, CJ, who do you want to nominate for the week of April 20-26? :rsmile: -
Nominations for future "albums of the week"
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
I agree with your opinion on new releases. I was just curious where others stood. My only concern with floating the idea is that we'll end up in a big debate about it and not get anywhere. I think the person coming up with the title should be aware of the pre-requisites about selecting a title. 1) Easily available 2) Classic date So that means no Strata East titles. :rsmile: -
Nominations for future "albums of the week"
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
If I was choosing an album, I'd choose something that was readily available for most. Multiple cd sets might be a stretch for some. Maybe we could do a box set of the week/month instead. I could imagine if someone chose Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, then comments about the box set would be relevant. I'm thinking that we might want to select the albums way in advance instead of waiting until we're coming up on the week. This might be prudent because 1) we can have time to find the cd, 2)be alert for used copies, set up trades, etc... This would be a good thread to do that in. I think we left it with CJ Shearn choosing the album for the week after next. Question: Are we open to new cds or reissues? -
Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Cool story! I dig the drumming on this album. It's one of the best parts of it. I was surprised it was Chambers. :rsmile: -
I can't believe someone mentioned Can. I love that group, especially when Damo was singing. My favorite Can album is Tago Mago, there is some great stuff on that one. There's a lot of great German music from that period such as Ash Ra Tempel or Agitation Free. I'm a big ol' Deadhead. I've got hundreds of shows. A lot of people slag them off, but if they were amazing in the late sixties and early seventies. I'd highly recommend stuff from late '68 - early '69 and '72-'74 if you really like jamming. I like a lot of late sixties rock. Beatles, Byrds, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Airplane. Of recent bands, I really like Stereolab. I prefer the middle period stuff, such as their Mars Audiac Quintet album. From country music, I'd suggest Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West. There are some compilations of their stuff from the '50s that are pretty amazing. Bryant was an amazing guitarist. Joe Maphis is really good too! The stuff I mentioned isn't jazz (1974 Grateful Dead is very jazzy, though), but it takes me someplace. :rsmile:

Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
This isn't my favorite Shorter album either, but it's fun to get into the different layers. I forgot how much I dug Freddie Hubbard. I really think it's a fascinating record. :rsmile:
