As discussed in a previous thread: Album of the week thread, we have launched the Organissimo Forums Album of the Week. Hopefull we can all spend the next week digesting this record and we can write reviews of it. The person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. Jazzmoose picked this week's title and nominated Peter Johnson to pick the album for next week. The album of the week for March 30 - April 5 as picked by Jazzmoose is: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye (click to buy) ___________________________________ Past albums of the week: March 23-29: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Thanks for the recommendation, Big Al. You're making me want to get it now. Too bad I already blew my cd budget. I sure do love those 4cd Mosaic sets. They're long enough to get a lot of great stuff but short enough to not be overwhelming. You have some great in-laws! :rsmile: -
Has anybody ever heard all the Def Leppardisms in Shania Twain's music. I know he uses different instruments, but you can really spot Lange's production style. I trip out all the time when my wife plays her cds. She gets mad when I say it's kind of like Def Leppard. There's actually a third version of Twain's album. An international version. That one is available for download off her website. I heard a little bit. It was really funny. Very east indian, but in a western pop way. My wife hated it. I thought it was the most intriguing of the three (that's not saying much, though). :rsmile:

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand

Welcome to the board, David! Here I am is one of my favorite tracks too. I too am interested in the Mosaic set. I listened to this cd since I posted my review, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think I overdid listening to it over and over. Today, I would have given it a B+. Lon, Good point about the Monk influence. The liners for the RVG mention that 4 months before this session, all participants took part in Monk's first orchestral concert at New York's Town Hall. I enjoyed Davis' piano on this session. I thought Rouse and Adams were on overdrive. I need to listen again to pay closer attention to the rhythm section. :rsmile: -
That's pretty pathetic. Add these names to the left off list: Jim Reeves, Faron Young, Johnny Horton. I thought it was a corker that they did include Billy Ray Cyrus. I guess they figured he was deserving because he had a big influence on mullet wearing Americans everywhere. I don't even know why they bother to call it country music anymore. Most of it is just rock/pop with steel guitars. My wife has that new Shania Twain cd. I laughed when I saw that it comes as 2 cds. One is a country version and one is a pop version. The vocals were the same on both, but the instrumentation varied. I couldn't imagine throwing a George Jones record on and having it sound like anything but country. :rsly:

I've got the war blues today. I'm hoping to snap out of it with John Patton's Boogaloo on vinyl. It sure sounds NICE. :rsmile:

I had only heard about Larry Young being the Coltrane of the organ. I had an old copy of Emergency and Hendrix's Nine to the Universe album. I remember the feeling I had when I opened the box. It was like Christmas. I was out of my skin as I played the set for the first time and read the booklet. I really wish they were doing a large John Patton set. There haven't been a lot of sets lately that give me the same excitement that I had when they were doing a lot of Blue Note sets like Hill, Mobley, etc... I too am a BIG fan of the Sam Rivers set! :rsmile:

Man, you are so lucky! I wish I could see the show. I remember discouraging words about the Shank Mosaic on the old board. I love the set and I'm very happy I got it. I even watched that surf movie that he made the soundtrack for. Have fun at the show! :rsmile:

What music besides jazz do you listen to?
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Tonight, I picked up a 2cd set that contains Scriabin's 3 symphonies and the Poem of Ectasy. I listened to the PoE in my car. I really liked it. I plan on listening to the cds all weekend. Thanks again, Red, for the recommendation! :rsmile: :rsmile: -
My first Mosaic set was the Larry Young. I am still so happy I bought that set. I still listen to it all the time. :rsmile:

I'd missed this thread earlier. That's really cool! Congrats! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:

Thanks Red, I'll check out Poem of Ectasy. I've heard some of his piano sonatas. I couldn't tell you which ones, though. Being a big McCoy Tyner fan, I look forward to hearing more Scriabin. :rsmile: -
That's a drag, but you've got a couple days left. Actually, you have as long as you want. I look forward to your review. :rsmile: Peter, I look forward to your album of the week pick. I bet it will be a good one. I'm glad to see another Albert King fan here. He's one of my all-time favorite bluesmen. His rap in "I'll Play the Blues for You" is so smooth. I don't know if you dig mid-seventies King, but his I Wanna Get Funky album is one of my favorites. I love the song "Flat Tire" - It cracks me up. I've never gotten into Hayes' Black Moses. I'm more of a Hot Buttered Soul type of guy. I'll give it another listen. Today's listening: John Coltrane - Transition Charlie Haden/Pat Metheny - Beyond the Missouri Sky Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand Non-jazz Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (new reissue) - sounds REALLY good! :rsmile: :rsmile:

I haven't heard much Scriabin, though I have liked what I have heard. Most of my 20th century Russian composer listening has been taken up by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. I really enjoy Prokofiev's symphonies. My favorite 20th century composer is the American, Charles Ives. I was taking a music appreciation course in college the where first heard his, Three Places in New England. I almost fell out of my chair. I loved it so much. It had an incredible use of dissonance. Any Scriabin recommendations? I'd love to hear more. :rsmile: Clinton, I'm also a BIG Fahey fan. I have most of his reissues on Takoma. I enjoyed his older stuff more than his recent recordings. Have you ever heard Jim O'Rourke's Bad Timing cd. That's one of my favorites in the Fahey vein. I'm also a fan of the rural stuff. I've picked up the Dock Boggs and Stanley Brothers reissues on the Revenant label. Heck, I even play banjo too. I have a couple John Martyn records. I picked them up years ago when I read that he was friends with Nick Drake. One lp is a John and Beverly Martyn record (Stormbringer) and the other is Solid Air. I think I listened to each one once years ago. I should give them another chance. I also dig some minimalism and electronic music. We are so fortunate to have so many types of music to enjoy! :rsmile: :rsmile: -
I agree with Alexander. That's a great group of musicians BN's got. I've picked up every cd (except Modernistic) so far by these guys. Two of my favorite pianists are Andrew Hill and Jaki Byard, so I'm a natural Moran fan. Soundtrack to Human Motion is still my favorite Moran cd. :rsmile:
-
I dig Air too! I put my favorite tracks from Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides on 1 cd. I listen to it while I'm working often. :rsmile: :rsmile: My listening: Jazz: Andrew Hill - Judgement Ike Quebec - Heavy Soul Non-Jazz: Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet :rsmile:

I wish that Mutley had audio on it. That would be fun. I'll start looking for Timeless. He seems like a very interesting player.

Thanks Green Dolphin! You guys are really making me want to go shopping. BTW - I love your avatar. Mutley rules!

Parkertown, I went ahead and fixed your image. I had to make the image itself smaller so it would work as an avatar. It is now 100 pixels by 75 pixels. It is now 13k. If you're curious, I used ImageReady which is part of Adobe PhotoShop to make it. Here it is:

Thanks Bev and Michael! You are making me want to do some shopping.

Cool! I 'll give it a shot. :rsmile:

It would be a lot more entertaining that way.

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
I've not listened to the Donald Byrd this week. My Gerald Wilson Mosaic arrived in the mail a couple of days ago and I purchased three new CDs from a 'Borders' visit (when I'd planned to purchase nothing). I know the goal, on this Board, is to write new reviews, posts, etc.. I wrote an excellent review on this CD at the BNBB. Alas, I've not been inspired to write another review. The BNBB = pisses me off (I can't get a copy of my own words anymore). I hope you're enjoying the Gerald Wilson. That should keep you busy for a while. I understand how you feel about the BNBB. It's disgusting how much amazing information was lost. They should have either kept it up as an archive in a locked state, or offered the posts for someone else to host. It's a great responsibility to run a Bulletin Board. I host one for my family and I have found that to be the case. They are trusting me to keep this valuable information for them. Since you already wrote a review, how would you rate it on a letter scale? For me it was a B/B+. I hope you'll join us for future albums of the week. :rsmile: -
Thanks Jazzhound! I've been curious about Abercrombie for a long time. I used to read about him in my guitar magazines, years ago.
