  1. Good point. I really didn't like it on my first listen, but it has really grown on me. I still haven't read the liner notes. :rsmile:
  2. I'm looking at the DVD package right now. It says it is VHS hi-fi, newly remastered in full frame format and it contains 8 minutes of rare trailers. I've watched the trailers and I understand why people were confused. I don't think the makers of the movie wanted it to be a success. It is nice with the DVD because of the ease of skipping around to the different sections. With one click, no more Davey Jones singing and dancing. That is worth the price of admission alone.
  3. Right On! I love that movie. It was one of the first DVDs I bought. I had previously owned it in the beta and VHS formats.
  4. Thanks for your enthusiasm Big Al! Your review is making me want to listen to it right now. I'm kicking myself because I just realized that my copy is in a box somewhere (I just moved). I thought I had unpacked it already. Aaaargh! (It will just give me some time to listen to that freaky Attica Blues instead). I hope to have my copy unpacked tomorrow. Jazzmoose already picked the next album for review. It will be Wayne Shorter's All Seeing Eye. Check the album review thread for details. Album review thread :rsmile: :rsmile:
  5. Speaking of Zappa and the Monkees. I love the Monkee's movie "Head" - There is a scene in the movie that takes place between Zappa and Davey Jones (It takes place after a deluxe Davey Jones song and dance sequence). It's one of the best scenes in the movie to me. Frank: That song was pretty white. Davy: Yeah, well, so am I, what can I tell ya. Frank: You've been working on your dancing though. Davy: Oh, yeah...glad you noticed it. Frank: It doesn't leave much time for your music. You should spend more time on it because the youth of America depends on you to show the way. Davy: Yeah? Frank: Yeah.
  6. Oof! I forgot about not posting after scottb. Nice work on acquiring the Byrd cd. I've pulled that move a few times myself. It sure is a lot more expensive than just buying the cd itself, but a man has got to do what a man has go to do.
  7. I picked up the Shepp this evening. I've listened to about 2/3 of it. It's definitely not Fire Music. I've heard songs that reminded me of the Temptations (Papa Was a Rolling Stone era) mixed with some Curtis Mayfield. The second track reminded me of Scott Walker of all people. The strings on Steam kind of reminded me of Charles Ives. Verrrrrry Interesting. It's actually quite surreal. I don't know if that was a regular cigarette being smoked on the cover. I realize it was a serious piece of work, so I don't mean to insult it, but it isn't your average jazz fare. I enjoyed what I heard so far. I'll post my opinion after I've listened to it a couple of times.
  8. I feel your pain, I know how it is to kill threads. :rsmile: It was done for a month or so on the BNBB a few years ago. I learned a lot about what people listen for. I think this will help me grow in my listening maturity. It's going to be tricky picking cds that most people have, but i'm open to trying new albums. I figure I can afford 1 cd a week. I agree - box sets are out. I'm looking forward to really digging into the Donald Byrd.
  9. I picked up some Nonesuch Explorer cds about 10 years ago. One of them was Iranian classical music. It was good.
  10. That sounds great! I wish I could play pedal steel. There's so many possibilities with that one. One thing I'd like to check out is the sacred steel movement. I've read about these guys, but I haven't heard them.
  11. I've had this cd for years and I've only listened a couple times to it. I'm looking forward to digging into it this coming week. :rsmile:
  12. I'm getting used to the crazy sounds my son makes. I'm going to give the Shepp a try. I'll report back this weekend.
  13. Here's a link to a webpage about the oud Oud page I'm wondering if you're looking for music of the bouzouki. The bouzouki is a greek instrument. The oud is a middle eastern lute type instrument. I've also seen it spelled as ud. I have a few records at home that feature these instruments. I found them inexpensively in used record stores. I prefer the oud to the bouzouki. Whenever I hear bouzouki music, I think of Zorba the Greek. Good luck.
  14. Thanks Mark! :rsmile:
  15. The moose has chosen wisely. The pick for the week of March 30 - April 5 will be: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye Jazzmoose, now it's your turn to open the nominations. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  16. I was very impressed with that list. I think most of us probably suffer from some sort of obsessive/compulsive disorder.
  17. That's a great idea! Maybe couw could nominate the person who will pick the next album and they can then nominate the next person and so on and so on. We'll make a list in this thread. :rsmile:
  18. Another fun trick is positiong the slide below the neck pickup and picking behind it. It works as a movable bridge and you can get some interesting tones out of it. Great idea! Speaking of slides. Has anyone here messed with lap-steel guitars. About 6 years ago I was playing lap-steel with some experimental musicians. I was running a bunch of effects with it. These instruments are great tools for experiment music and they're pretty cheap. I have an old 50's Rickenbacker steel guitar. I only paid $175 for it. I would really like to learn to play western swing with it too. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  19. It's funny, the second jazz cd I ever bought was Coltrane's Om. I didn't know what to think.
  20. As discussed in a previous thread: Album of the week thread, we are launching the Organissimo Forums Album of the Week. Hopefull we can all spend the next week digesting this record and we can write reviews of it. Hopefully, this will be a weekly thread. The person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. The album for the week of March 23-29 as picked by couw is: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand (click to buy)
  21. Daydream Nation was a great album. I can totally see it leading someone to modern improv and jazz. When I first saw Nels Cline, he actually reminded me of some Sonic Youth. I have to admit that I'm a big loser and really liked Sonic Youth's Goo. My roomates used to give me grief for that, they called it a sell-out. I loved the stuff on SST Records, the Minutemen, Husker Du, Firehose. I wish I had some of it on cd. All the albums I have by these guys are on vinyl. :rsmile:
  22. Good choice! Do you want me to start a new thread for album of the week or do you? :rsmile:
  23. Green Dolphin, Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips suggestion. I've always been a big fan of Mercury Rev's first album. Have you heard the Lip's Zaireeka - 4 cds that you play at the same time on different stereos. I've only been able to play 3 at the same time. They're some interesting people. I too love Joni Mitchell's Hejira. That's my favorite Jaco. I mostly go to Hejira and her albums that came before. My favorite album of hers is her first, Songs to a Seagull. I used to be so in love with her. I've given up on trying to have a "cool" music collection. My friends laugh at some of the stuff I love. Things such as the Incredible String Band. I think I've lost friends over that one.
  24. How about letting the first person who posts after this post gets to pick the cd. I would suggest in the beginning to try to pick something that most of us might have. Maybe a BN title since we came from there. I have emusic, so I have access to most of the OJCs. The person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. We can run the Album of the week from Sunday to Saturday. So the first one will run from Sunday March 23 to Saturday March 29. I think this will be a lot of fun.
