  1. I think I saw a post from him within the last couple of weeks. Wes is a cool cat.
  2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is ALWAYS relevant.
  3. THANKS AGAIN!!! No jazz for my birthday, but got some cash, so I'll be able to buy the Andrews Hill Mosaic Select.
  4. Growing up, I was a HUGE Beatles fan. I tried to pick up pressing from all over the world. Having said this, I have a few of those Japanese Odeon albums and I think they sound better than most of the other Beatles' vinyl I have. Of course, I don't have the Mobile Fidelity set, which probably sounds the best. Have you checked the Steve Hoffman forum? I'd do a search of their board, I bet they have covered this already. www.stevehoffman.tv Good luck!
  5. THANKS! It's been a great birthday and you all have made it even better.
  6. THANK YOU!!!! I couldn't ask for better friends or a better way to start my birthday.
  7. THANKS! What a great early birthday surprise.
  8. I'm glad you mentioned Jimmy Bryant. He's my favorite guitarist. I know he focused on country/western music, but I've read in the fifties he often jammed with Stuff Smith. If you guys have open ears, I highly recommend picking up one of his compilation CDs with Speedy West. The second volume has an extended workout on the song China Boy that is worth the price of admission alone.
  9. I second that! It's a great set.
  10. It's good to have you here Musical Marine! I agree with Ghost. I think your original post had merit. I think if a person has ended up on this forum, it's because they think for themselves. I think a person that can find the beauty in jazz has to have a certain depth. To me, jazz has more feeling in it than other music. I know classical music is very powerful, but there is something about the cry from a horn that seems to come from a player's soul. That's why I love later period Coltrane. To me, his music isn't just a series of notes, but it is something that is almost alive to me. I hope you get to come home soon!
  11. Berigan, It's nice to agree with you on something again. I dig the Doors. I like the fact that they were doing their own thing in the late sixties. I love the instrumentation of their songs. I dig Kreiger's guitar playing. I like the fact that they were a jazzy band behind Morrison. I know ol' Jimbo could be a bit of an ass, but anyone on that much drugs or booze will eventually be an ass. Trust me I know. Oh yeah, JazzyPaul's comments about the Morrison phase apply to me. I went through it when I was around 19 or 20, but I skipped the Heavy Metal phase. The closest I got to that was wanting to be like Jimmy Page. Hell, I even got into Crowley. Bad stuff! Stay away kiddies.
  12. I hope you have a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
  13. Actually, he got over it. Check this thread
  14. That was a very kind post, TheMusicalMarine! I think we fall into a couple different camps around here. The Scholars and the Silly. I've got the head of a cat... so I guess I'm not a scholar.
  15. Seriously... I really enjoy liner notes, but I usually wait to read them until I've listened to an album at least 2 or 3 times. That way I have heard the music with my own perspective and then when I do read the liners, oftentimes it enriches the music for me.
  16. I told B3er I'd cut it out. Some forums actually have specific threads devoted to hijinks... We should have a "bottomless pit" thread, so we could just shoot the bull. takes all the fun out of the world! After the politics of this last year... I'd rather ask/read stupid questions all day and laugh myself silly.
  17. Damn! I never thought about that...

  19. Cat Shatner sets the phasers on "neuter" when he encounters those Maine Coon Cats. Yikes!
  20. I miss the hijinks too!
  21. I'm listening to a 1976 recording of Pat Martino right now. He floors me. I've also read some of his music theory and it's pretty wild. I'm surprised that Howard Roberts hasn't been mentioned. I have some of his 60's Capitol albums and they're quite good.
