  1. "Escravos De Jo" from Hotmosphere is a personal fave. RIP.
  2. Happy Birthday casanovas347!
  3. At least I was half right! I'll have to play them in rapid succession with what you say in mind, akanalog.
  4. I have the Label M reissue, thumbs up here! I like it better than Layers and Les' later R&B albums. To my ears, Invitation To Openness seems similar to albums such as Coryell's Barefoot Boy or even Miles' In A Silent Way.
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. Comparing the size to the dollar bills, that would be quite a matchbook! Matches to light big Cheech and Chong size... uh,... cigarettes. I believe that is a napkin. Cool nonetheless. And it would be a cool matchbook also. ← Thanks a lot .:.impossible, now I like your matchbook idea better than my napkin idea.
  7. They say LeBron will bolt to the Knicks when his contract is up in Cleveland. He has lucrative incentives in his Nike contract to play on either of the coasts. I was hoping he might come over to the Lakeshow...
  8. Duke Ellington was in my dream last night. I was hanging out with a few friends in a garage, and suddenly there he was, seated on a stool. I said something and he smiled. Short dream, but cool!
  9. I read an article about Ricky Williams, some reporter found him living in a tent like a bum in Australia and he'd lost his wallet. He's a can short of a six pack.
  10. The Raiders are my team, always have been. I pull for the Rams, too. I'm a homer, even after the teams move away. It's natural. Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, Angels... The Raiders better score 40+ every game if they expect to win with a defense not much different from last year's team. WTF are we going to do against the run? I haven't been following close enough, I've got to see who's new on defense. I think Collins will be much better this year, he showed signs late last season that he was grasping the offense. Now he has a great back to hand off to (Jordan). He often throws high, Moss is a perfect target. Moss and Porter will make it tough on opposing secondary.
  11. I have tracks they were working on, never intended for release. No copies allowed, sorry. I may destroy it just to be fair. I should never have mentioned it, I think Jim may have said not to.
  12. Now I've got to go home and listen for flatulence. I really dig Etta's singing here, I'm sort of bummed somebody stunk it up! I've got to give the Sanborn another chance. I dissed him pretty hard the first time around, even referenced the G man. Maybe my mood wasn't right for syrup! Then there's the fact that I thought #6 was a single piano. I find a new way to make a fool of myself every BFT!
  13. Thanks Ron S & Soul Stream! I haven't read the notes or seen any of the type layout, so I'm looking forward to that too. I can see a few of the changes which were made, and I think they work well! Can't wait to hear the music!
  14. Damn, I can't remember what I listened to at 6 years old. It certainly wasn't jazz, consider yourself lucky! Maybe I'll give ALS a spin this evening, it's been a while.
  15. Now that I know they're Prestige I'm worried that I might have the Brother Jack and the Jug. Better review my emusic discs. I thought sure everyone would hate the track I hated on Disc 2, but I'll save that for tomorrow's answer thread.
  16. I listen to ALS very rarely, and like other Coltrane albums much more. On the rare occasion that I actually listen to ALS, I do enjoy it. It just isn't my favorite. KOB is fantastic, and is definitely one of my favorite Miles Davis albums.
  17. You feel no pain!
  18. I had four memberships and just cancelled all four recently. Wonder if I was the last straw!
  19. Just keep making the file smaller! It isn't so much the size in inches as in number of kilobytes, which usually depends on the resolution of the photo. If you have Photoshop, File/Save For Web can usually be manipulated to make the image the right size, number of pixels, etc. for posting. There's also a resize function under Help. For Microsoft, I'm sure there is a similar function in whatever software you view your photos with.
  20. D'oh! Right you are. For some reason I wasn't thinking Cuban here. I've maybe got 6 cds of music like this, and I miss this one. Son of a gun.
  21. Many thanks to Jim for compiling this excellent BFT! There are a number of tracks on here I'd love to add to my collection. I didn't recognize anything I have, but as usual I won't be suprised if I missed something I do have or was WAY off with all of my guesses. Also, thank you Mark for assisting in distribution! Now, on to read the responses!
  22. Blindfold Test #27 Compiled by JSngry Disc Two 1. There must be some sort of trickery at work here, with Cannonball being announced. Odd for Cannonball, at least as far as I've delved into his catalog (which isn't nearly far enough). African theme, I can dig it. I've been listening to Fela Kuti and The Daktaris, as well as a few other African-themed compilations lately, so I'm definitely a fan of the African/afrobeat sound. Very festive, very happy. 2. I hear machine guns, then shit gets scary. It's the creepy part of the movie, don't look! Brotzman? Four and a half minutes more of this is really going to freak me out. My stomach is knotting here. 3. Yuck, this is cheese. I get the same vibe viewing a Thomas Kinkade. Gorelick? NEXT! 4. Now I know where Erykah Badu got her style. I like this very much. I'd almost think this IS Erykah, but the singing's too tasteful. This is how she SHOULD sing. 5. From the jump, I dig it. Blue Mitchell comes to mind, or Kenny Dorham. Drums make me think Elvin Jones. Mobley maybe? No complaints! Sheesh, the piano player's a madman. Bass, superb. 6. Totally entrancing piano, I can't get enough of this one. Is this Keith Jarrett? Amazing skill at work here. I'd buy solo piano albums that include this sort of sound. Carries my interest throughout. Have the hands reversed their usual roles here? Mind-boggling! 7. Horace Silver-ish. I might have this one, but I can't think of what it might be. Oliver Nelson? 8. Steel drums, and the solos don't sound cheesey! This is my kind of oddity. 9. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and Return To Forever come to mind. This synth isn't my favorite sound, but it's pretty funky here. The bass and drums keep it all funky. Azymuth maybe? 10. Jaco Pastorius bass? Insane pace. I like the electric piano, I think there's room for it with alongside the other keyed instruments. I love traditional piano, it's indispensable and one of my favorite instruments-but I dig the electric sound too. 11. Les Baxter or someone from those spacey tiger-rug martini music compilations. Funky, with a twinge of spacey samba. I like that sort of stuff!
  23. Blindfold Test #27 Compiled by JSngry Disc One 1. Reminds me of Jimmy Smith's "House Party." I can dig it, just don't know it. 2. I'd guess Louis Armstrong, doing a song with "Cheesecake" in the title. Probably some obscure slang from way back when for something else. Funny stuff! 3. Salsa, now that's my kind of pace change! I know a few names in this genre, but I probably couldn't differentiate Ricardo Ray from Eddie Palmeiri. 4. I like this one all the way around. I struggle to identify horns here, is it sax, baritone sax, and a trombone? Or two horns? I'm lost. Don't know who, I'd guess it was 70s for the sound of the bass. Really solid groove and I enjoyed all the solos and particularly the trades at the end. Strata East? 5. I'll bet this is another standard I don't recognize that some of you guys will spot with no problem. Always amazes me. Really weird piano solo, wtf? Kept the toe tappin' though. Monk? 6. Another toe tappin' rhythm. I'd buy this, the piano stands out to me but is in fantastic company. Guitar makes me think Tal Farlow for some reason. 7. This R&B threatens to get too sugary for me but never goes too far. Reminds of some Crusaders songs, but I wouldn't say this is them. Tastefully done, even the vocals. Not bad. 8. Billie? I pretty much stink at everything in these BFTs, but singers REALLY aren't my area of expertise. I like everything about it, the instrumentation is top-notch. 9. Buddy Rich? Don't like this much. Maybe I'm not in the mood for it. Too Vegas. 10. I like this better than the previous song, although there is a similar "big" horn sound. Gerald Wilson comes to mind, or Oliver Nelson. I feel I should know the tune, but can't put my finger on it. 11. Love this from the get-go. I love the doorbells, what can I say? Favorite track so far. I'm not recognizing the vibes...it doesn't sound like Bags and it doesn't sound like Hamp...Lem Winchester maybe? 12. Sonny Rollins? Love this one too. Great quartet, especially the piano. 13. Sun Ra? Spacy and psychedelic is my bag, baby! Yeah! 14. Mountain Oysters? Now that's some weird shit! Greeeeeaaazzzey, if you will! 15. An extra helping of greeeeeaaazze, much obliged. Patton? 16. Something very groovy, very mellow entitled..."The Groove Juice Special." Just kidding. I dig these sort of little interludes, they're great for breaking up mixes. 17. Lovely soundtrack for depression. Kind of pretty, but I might cry.
