Is rap tomorrow's jazz?

Compiling complete. All packages will mail out tomorrow. Here are the participants: MartyJazz Sal GregN & organissimo Dr. Rat PHILLYQ Indestructible! ghost of miles JohnB A FEW DISCLAIMERS: I have included one track which, in terms of lyric content, is completely devoid of any redeeming quality whatsoever. In fact, it is downright offensive. There are other songs which definitely can be considered offensive for other reasons. There are songs with four-letter words. There are songs with strong sexual overtones. There are songs with strong racial overtones. There are songs which discuss topics such as drug dealing, drug use, prostitution, and murder. Sequencing was heavily considered. Certain tracks follow others for a reason. Thanks all for participating, I look forward to your comments. I'm just as interested in reading negative comments as positive ones, and I think I've provided fuel for both! I'd only ask that everyone be specific either way. -

Sure, I'm serious with the offer. Anyone interested, PM me an address. I'll put something together this weekend. I made the same offer over on AAJ and no one responded except my friend Sandi, and she was just being nice. -

Everyone's got an opinion about rap until actually challenged to listen to some. No big deal, I wouldn't expect anyone to like it anyway. I'm sure I can provide examples which show rap at its best, but even at its best it isn't going to be good by jazz standards. It has its own place, its own audience. It's not for everyone. -

Rap is akin to collage, and faces very similar criticisms as collage did from traditional painting critics. Also, like collage, rap will never attain the level of creativity which music created with traditional skills will (imo). Michael Fitzgerald is looking for traditional music qualities in a music that can't possibly provide such qualities since it never intended to. If anyone is interested, I'll gladly put together a cdr Blindfold Test of rap/DJ work which has been created with the highest possible quality for the genre. There definitely won't be any deft instrumentation by jazz standards, but I've been listening to rap since I was a kid so I know a lot about it. -
Shockingly ugly, by dog standards. Wow.

The best way I've seen so far is to utilize an unused input on your car stereo to create a hard-wire for the ipod's headphones port. My friend did this using what would normally be the disc changer input on the back of his car stereo, then ran the cable to an area where the ipod can rest. I think it took two cables to convert it to the correct size to be compatable with the ipod.

Thanks Hans. Figures, I just bought the Birth Of Soul box a few months ago. Sigh.
-
How much different will this be from the Birth Of Soul Atlantic box?

Happy Birthday!

Anyone have any theories as to who the latest MLB players are to get caught with steroids in their system? Rumor is there's a bigger name than Rafael Palmeiro.

I saw it discussed recently that there's a feature in My Controls which allows you to turn off all the images. Ought to do the trick!
-
Let's see, I've aged Joe well beyond his years, and turned Randy into Paul Wertico. Dang it!

One of the movie channels had Wim Wenders' Buena Vista Social Club documentary on last night. It is fortunate that we were able to hear Ibrahim's music before his departure. RIP.

Disc Two 1. I picture a Colombo episode to this odd accordion feature. Oh, I guess the accordion was just an intro. Kind of cool, but not among my favorites on this BFT. 2. Andrew Hill-like or Monkish. No, I'm lost, the piano player seems to simplify his playing as the song progresses. The drummer is unique and powerful, but I can't associate a name. I like this. 3. Um...Sonny Rollins? 4. Man, this is nice. The Jazz Crusaders get this sort of feeling at times, is this one of their early songs? I REALLY like this one. I'd associate Bobby Timmons and Blue Mitchell with this funky feel. Must buy. 5. Johnny Lytle? Pretty sure I've heard this melody before. Intense, serious soloing here despite the vibes sound I'd associate with loungey, lava-lampin', shag rug type stuff. Cool! No clue who. 6. Weather Report? My least favorite track so far. 7. No guess, I'm looking forward to reading more about this. I really like this composition and melody, though it is difficult for me to describe. The piano never loses my interest. There seems to be three parts to me. The first and last are similar bookends, with an elaborate solo in between. I like the way the parts go together, and how the song resolves itself. 8. This is a little cheesey to me. Gato Barbieri? 9. Whoa, violin and harmonica feature. Stuff Smith? The rhythm section and piano are top notch. Awesome! 10. Sonny Rollins? ( it's my default answer for, "the heck if I know") Not terribly fond of this one. It ain't bad. 11. The bass line reminds me of Pharoah Sanders' The Creator Has A Master Plan." Donald Byrd and Eddie Henderson come to mind, but this sounds more like Freddie Hubbard to me. Funky! 12. Shirley and Stanley? 13. Something sad in this one, and slightly foreboding. A fine choice to close the disc, a different mood from anything which preceded it. Mingus? Thanks again Marty! Tons of tunes I'd like to own. Now, on to read the responses!

First off, many thanks to Marty for compiling this fantastic BFT. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! Blindfold Test #28 Compiled by MartyJazz Disc One 1. No idea who, but this is exactly the sort of track I love from this era. I'd even say it's funky. 2. Trumpet makes me think Freddie Hubbard. Infectious and instantly endearing, I'd buy this. 3. McCoy Tyner & Elvin Jones? 4. Joe Pass comes to mind, and that's good to these ears. 5. Another one that immediately grabs me, like track 2. Inspiring. 6. The horns make me think of old TV jingles. Nice piano. No guess. 7. Sonny Rollins? 8. Fun, but no chance I'd know this! 9. Another must buy/must have/must play repeatedly. Bobby Hutcherson? I think I've heard the tune but I'm certain I'd remember this version if I had it. Excellent. 10. Man, what an intro, I'm hooked. The audio quality and soloing throws me a bit, at first I thought this was older. Now I don't know when to place it. Sonny Rollins? 11. Tight. The bass player is on fire. I'm trying to spot the trumpet...Lee Morgan? I'd buy this. 12. Sonny Rollins? I dig the vibes here. 13. Slim Gaillard? 14. Art Taylor drums? Lex Humphries? Something in the drums made me think of Coltrane's Giant Steps. More great bass work, and another album I'd gladly add to the shelves. 15. Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron come to mind here. 16. Another that I'd have no hope of guessing. The piano playing here is different, somehow not what I'd expect in this context. I don't know any famous clarinet players...great stuff. 17. Sonny Rollins? 18. There's something irreverent to this one, the way the everyone bangs around and lets it go wild. Bit of a bull in a China shop. Fun, a good way to close the disc. No idea.

My copy arrived today! Congratulations Jim, Joe, & Randy, This Is The Place SMOKES!

Williams is greatly improved, fwiw. He's become a much more controlled, reliable point guard. I've never thought much of Walker.
-
It might, at least, have some entertainment value.

Happy Birthday Lon!

I received my discs yesterday and gave disc one a listen last night. What a compilation! From track one this puppy smokes! Thanks Marty!

My sincerest condolences, Conrad. A touching tribute, I'm in tears over here. Jon

I was in such a rush to post my responses for the last few, I didn't even notice Rooster Ties hadn't posted the answers yet! I can wait.
