FWIW, my post was only intended to identify all the weird issues here. I agree with what Michael Fitzgerald said (excepting the inference that I am confused, if it was directed my way). Like Chris, I look at the whole thing and think about how artists are ripped off by record companies to begin with. As customers, we ought to do our best to make sure the artists whose music we enjoy get their due.

Lew hopefully received his due for the albums when they were originally purchased, which was probably not much per record. Albums are re-sold all the time, yet only because Jazztropic's motivation was different did a problem exist. No money gets deposited in the artists' account during any re-sale. In order to transfer to CDR Jazztropic had to own/have access to a nice turntable and a stand-alone burner. That means he's not exactly your average music customer, doesn't it? He's probably not somebody with 15 scratched up CDs in a stack on the counter and a hard drive of 5,000 mp3s from illegal networks. He's more likely somebody who has invested thousands of dollars in LPs and CDs over the years and takes care of them. CDRs can be filled with legitimately purchased music, I have hundreds of them from emusic. Yet, the inevitability of people copying albums in their entirety means that CDRs are appropriately associated with artists getting ripped off. No avoiding it.

Jazz stations should definitely play all the various representations of jazz, imo. I would trust that any given radio DJ would select what he/she considers the best track off a given album no matter what it is. It can't be all one style, all the time. Play brand new music, really old music, really strange music, music that swings, music that's funky, music that's way out there...that would be my preference anyway. How else is anyone going to learn about all that jazz has to offer? I read discussions here about music by artists I have no idea about. There should be a place for all of it on jazz radio, imo. It would actually be my preference to hear the music on the radio change styles on a song by song basis. Juxtapose, baby!

On one hand, it isn't cool to get free music that the artists aren't getting anything for, and definitely not cool if a third party is turning a profit for Pink Floyd's music. On the other hand, the guys trading these bootleg cdrs probably have every official Pink Floyd release available and are merely fulfilling their appetite for more. Will the bootleg material in question be remastered and sold officially, ensuring Pink Floyd gets their proper due? Or will this material never be available?

My condolences to the families of the dead and wounded. I hope justice catches up with the cowards responsible. Have all our Londoners been accounted for? Please continue to check in.

This was my first Coltrane, and among the first 5 jazz cds I ever bought. It still sounds great to me after years of listening. I love every track, particularly "Cousin Mary" and "Naima."

Here's a portion of the portrait I did of my good friend and his wife. The painting itself is too large for my scanner, but this is the most important part of the composition. I still have the painting because someone knocked it off the stand at the reception and savaged the edges, which I'm going to repair.
