  1. Blue Notes for $9.99 at Tower: Gene Harris & The Three Sounds - Live At The 'It' Club Volume 2 Wayne Shorter - The Soothsayer Horace Silver - Tokyo Blues Joe Henderson - Our Thing
  2. I was laughing my ass off when Shaq was imitating Madsen's defense to the ref after that cheap offensive foul call. Then Shaq clowned Craig Sager's suit after the game (and a few insulting questions from Craig). Shaq is the man, but his free throws are unbelievably bad.
  3. Despite the warts like that Pepper tune , thanks again Ray!
  4. Smoked weed every day and cut school all the time but still managed good grades. Played basketball and skateboarded constantly. Mad play from the ladies sans effort. My teenage years rocked.
  5. Picked this one up tonight. Yep, I like it. Especially but not exclusively "Poor Eric" (I agree with the consensus). The alternate take of the title track is a quality bonus track, it is winding down as I type.
  6. Prince never quit on the play, that's what coaches always preach on defense.
  7. Happy Birthday Jim! I'm going to tip back my Samuel Adams in your honor, as I listen to "Poor Eric" on Jackie McLean's Right Now for the first time...bottoms up!
  8. Hard to not say blues, since so much jazz is bluesy, but I voted other and I'm going with funk followed by soul and blues.
  9. Maybe I should have held my breath with that Conan character, I didn't catch on for a while--then it was funny. I'm glad the newly abbreviated "BIG O" is back.
  10. I'm pulling for the Pistons over the Pacers. Rip Hamilton needs to have big games for the Bad Boys to win--he needs to outwork the crafty Reggie Miller. Chauncey needs to d up Tinsley, and Teyshawn needs to match Artest's hustle. Rasheed looked pretty good in the last game, I'm hoping his plantar fasciitis problem is not bothering him to the point that he will be unable to stay with Jermaine O'Neal. The T'Wolves are no chumps. Cassell is another swift PG with J, not faster than Tony Parker but more consistent jumper. Payton will have to do a good job of forcing Cassell toward the help and challenging all his shots. Sprewell is playing tough, but Kobe has gotten the better of him in the past. KG is much faster than Duncan, he will be more difficult for the Mailman to contain. Szcerbiak has made a miraculous recovery to throw in some good minutes. Hassell has been hitting his open jumpers. They're a good team. The biggest problem Wolves have with the Lakers--they have no one for Shaq. Madsen? Olawokandi? Oliver Miller? No chance. Pound it in to Shaq--that should be the Lakers' offensive game plan.
  11. Have a great one!
  12. Welcome Gary! Your brother's album Soul Brotherhood is a favorite of mine too. I also have the (Legends Of Acid Jazz) Fantasy twofer containing the albums Afro-Disiac and Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui (Beautiful People)--soulful, funky music!
  13. I have received all the BFTs, and I think I have replied to every discussion. I may not have guessed much in the process, and may have revealed my all-too-shallow knowledge of jazz, but I figure it is the least I could do in return for all the effort and costs of the BFTs.
  14. Organissimo Blindfold Test#11: Compiled By RDK 1. Summertime (almost?)? Les McCann maybe? Great introduction with the drums and the bowed bass. 2. Reggae was unexpected--I don't know any jazzers who've tackled Jamaican rhythms, so I don't have a guess. Not bad. 3. I have and love this one. 4. Stepphane Grappelli? 5. I have this one and can't place it, but I'm not going to agonize over it like I did during Rockefeller Center's test. 6. Horace Silver? I've heard this one before, I think. 7. Wayne Shorter? Awesome track. 8. RDK, this track is just incredible. The vocals give me chills. No clue. 9. Yusef Lateef has done some stuff that sounds like this--oh wait, what the hell? No idea. Sort of corny to me, I don't dig this one much. 10. Who put tweek in this drummer's coffee? Skills galore. Jack DeJohnette? 11. ZANY! Not my bag. 12. SENSITIVE! Yawns. 13. I like this. The female vocalist has a warm voice, makes me feel good. Is this one of those gals from the Mosaic catalog (Peggy Lee or Anita O'Day or June Christy)? 14. Fun, but not great. No guess. 15. Nice, but I don't know. 16. Gary Bartz? Pharoah Sanders? Bonus Disc 1. The lyric "Ain't got time to shake your hand!" has been stuck in my head for days! Great stuff! 2. Reminds me of Cheech & Chong-- "Hey man it's Dave, I got the stuff! Open the door!" "Who?" "Dave!" "Dave's not here!" Cool song! 3. Predates my knowledge. However, if I'm not mistaken, this is swinging like crazy. 4. Sounds like rock and roll. Wait, I know this song. I know I've heard it. 5. Suggestive lyrics, I love it! This is like the first version of the Humpty Dance. 6. Raw and funky! The bonus disc doesn't quit! 7. Toe's still tappin', "I surrender I surrender!" 8. Cadillac Boogie Woogie!--sounds like rap. 9. Damn, this is TOO hot. Schmokin'. Also a rap of sorts, with boxing as the theme. 10. Cool how the crowd is so into it. Must have been a fun show. 11. Not bad. Not overwhelming. A nice little work out. 12. Same comments as 11 13. "You ain't got no money, ain't got no use for you!" The more things change, the more they stay the same. 14. Whoa! This is strange. Very unique sound. I really like it. 15. This was sampled by Prince Paul, if I recall. Great little jingle--easy to see why rappers related to this. 16. Bluesy goodness. Reminds me of Ray Charles, but I don't think it is Ray Charles. 17. Is this the same group as Track 1? 18. Are they vocalizing through their instruments? Like listening to insects communicate! I love it. 19. Aw sheeit, now we're really getting down. What a voice! Great segway from the previous track. 20. RDK, these vocal tracks are excellent! 21. Wild, they just keep coming! Insects? Ants in BVDs? Drinking DDT at the bar? Frigging insanity! 22. Same comments as 11. 23. Something infectious here, but sort of looney like circus music. 24. Have and love this one. 25. The announcer was so excited you can't make out the name he says. Like Track 4, reminds me of the first rock and roll. Thanks again RDK for this collection of "solid, groovy" tunes. Hugely enjoyable. :tup :tup Now to read the responses!
  15. Happy Birthday Chuck!
  16. I gotta give it up for Doug Christie, as much as I've dumped on him--that guy came to play. I actually felt bad for CWebb--his shot was REALLY close to going in. Soulstation, do we have some lovely parting gifts for Sactown?
  17. My dad has the same plantar fasciitis problem--when it was at its most painful stage, he couldn't stand up on it to walk.
  18. I didn't know it was MOST, JLarsen. I haven't actually studied this much, but I'm a regular Cliff Clavin when it comes to little bits of trivia like that (from loads of Discovery Channel). Thanks for sharing your intricate knowledge on this topic, JLarsen.
  19. Elvin Jones - The Prime Element
  20. Elvin Jones - Genesis
  21. One thing I've heard that gives some perspective to the size of the universe--some of the stars we see in the night sky no longer exist, but the light these now-dead stars emitted at light speed ages ago is still arriving to earth.
  22. Sactown will be without sharpshooting former Laker/Tenderwolf Anthony Peeler, who is suspended two games for duking regular season mvp KG in the chops. While I agree SA is stronger than both Sac and Minnesota, I don't think either of those teams are pushovers. The Lakers will have to earn it, no question.
  23. I don't yet have my responses together, but want to say I'm really enjoying both discs a whole lot. Great variety, and I recognize a few tunes so at least I won't get blanked in the guess column! Thanks RDK.
  24. Happy Birthday, and thanks for all the hugely informative posts!
