  1. Thanks for the suggestion Gary. I may go for the Blue Mitchell and the Gerald Wilson, tonight perhaps... I want them all. The list of sets that are already OOP is depressing.
  2. Any suggestions for a first Mosaic purchase? I am probably not in much danger of buying something I already have.
  3. The one I downloaded has these tracks, and was reissued by Luv N Haight which is the Ubiquity label: Confusion Trouble In Mind Sweetback Ever Been Mellow? Jamaica Farewell You've Got It Bad, Girl Some of the best playing is actually on the Stevie Wonder cover, where a furiously fast extended solo closes out the song. I haven't seen it with the sexy broad on the cover, though. AMG gives it a rotten review.
  4. I believe that one was reissued by the Ubiquity label, if not Fantasy. I downloaded it from EMusic a while back. The title track smokes!
  5. I get the same message as BFrank when trying to send a pm.
  6. I'm a little disappointed that Mike Ricci doesn't seem to know who some of his best contributors are, based on his list of "core members." He includes on the list someone he banned (bombastic) while forgetting to include great contributors like Muskrat Ramble, Patricia, Tenorman, Saundra Hummer...Ricci must not read his own board much.
  7. Thanks Late and Swinging Swede! I've printed the thread for reference.
  8. Night Dreamer at this point, though I've yet to hear a few of the other candidates, including the ones Jim and Guy chose...
  9. George was recently arrested for crack possession, and I've heard some more about it... I have a friend who worked with George on a project once, and he said George was cracked out the whole time. At one point during a meeting at his house, George lost a rock on the carpet and spent more than an hour on his hands and knees looking for it. At the very least, my friend said George was still personable and fun, just hopelessly addicted and surrounded by people who are in no way trying to help him get off crack.
  10. Because George is too busy smoking crack?
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. Belated birthday salutations to two legends of these here jazz boards. Hope you two both had a good one.
  13. Just ordered this one from Dusty Groove. The chips, salsa, and a Negra Modelo will be waiting. Now all I need's a nice little senorita, and I'll be ready...
  14. I will definitely second this recommendation for all those who dig a little latin soul funk jazz with vocals. "Idle Hands" is my favorite cut on this one.
  15. I've got that comp Dave. Are you saying you suspect the track "New Rising Sun" is a posthumous studio product?
  16. 'Showin' her my "Oh" face'--any better?
  17. out my welcome at many different places.
  18. My sincerest sympathies and condolences, Tom. The strength, class, and grace which you have displayed in sharing this saddest time with all of us is very admirable.
  19. Ed, he related to the kids very well and had a great sense of humor. Everyone genuinely liked him as a person. Extremely well spoken, he commanded the attention of everyone in the class, buzzer to buzzer.
  20. 1. "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" 2. "Villanova Junction" 3. "Midnight Lightning" Edited due to intimidation from the Hulkster...
  21. Pat Martino with Gil Goldstein WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN--This is a guitar/electric piano duo that I enjoy. It has frequent challenging elements in contrast to soul jazz-oriented dates. A few others that come to mind: Joe Zawinul THE RISE & FALL OF THE THIRD STREAM Lonnie Liston Smith ASTRAL TRAVELLING
  22. I love the moments on Brother Jack McDuff's MOON RAPPIN' where he plays piano.
  23. FWIW, by far the best teacher I had in high school taught US History--this friggin' guy was a genius. His class was far different than any other high school class. Typed homework assignments every night, due at the beginning of class--no exceptions, no late work accepted. A multiple choice and written exam every Friday. Every class was a lecture--take notes or miss the information. However, what really made this guy a great teacher is that he could motivate everyone to perform at the level he demanded. Every student respected him and in fact enjoyed his class. Bottom line--expecting more from students is not something that should be avoided, but required. I say raise the bar and give students an idea of the heights they should rise to academically. Highly intelligent professors will help the cream rise to the top--I see no need to cater to mediocrity.
  24. Randy, you've included several tracks that are perfect for my groove-oriented tastes, though I certainly wouldn't overlook the other styles you included. I was especially entranced by 1-7, 1-9, and 1-10, as far as the more straight-ahead tracks go. I enjoy every minute of these, even the tracks that don't appeal to me. I like to listen with my comments in front of me, and everyone else's comments on the screen, then compare and contrast...sometimes my opinions change over repeated listens. I too have enjoyed the savvy sequencing Randy and the other compilers have employed. I'm liking track 2-2 more and more, it is playing right now.
  25. Damn, apparently I've neglected my copy of Bobby Hutcherson DIALOGUE for too long. JSngry's correct identifications on this one look to be in record numbers! I'm after that Gil Evans first, maybe the Randy Weston and then the Johnny Griffin after that, and then the Coltrane... B) I'm batting about .063, but I'm lovin' playing in the bigs...
