Happy Birthday Berigan!

Nope. I usually make it out once a year or so, when a friend of mine gets company tickets. No such luck this year so far.

Many thanks to Jim Dye for this excellent compilation. My budget cannot keep up with the music these BFTs are making me want to buy. 1. The BFT starts with a bang, I really like this. Chico Hamilton? 2. This cooks...top notch. Don't know. 3. It only gets better. I like the organ player's approach on this one. 4. Well all righty, let's go to India...or is it Middle Eastern?. I love the haunting vibe here. Aspects of the vocals remind me of Marlena Shaw "Woman Of The Ghetto" 5. Definitely a Middle Eastern influence here too. I'm a sucker for the military style drums, this is cool stuff. 6. Woody Shaw? Drummer and bassist really work this one to a frenzy with like a minute left. Another one that I really like. 7. Dig the sudden change in tempo. Didn't expect the flute. Is that one song? Roland Kirk? Yusef Lateef? Enjoyed this. 8. What's not to like? 9. Immediately infectious, this and number 4 are my favorites so far. 10. Pharoah Sanders? 11. Cool grooves, I can dig it. The female vocalist is gritty, and those horns are murder. 12. No shocker here, I like the closing track too. Reminds me of Charles Lloyd. THANKS AGAIN JIM DYE, AND CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BIRTH OF YOUR SON! I will comment on the Bonus Disc at another time, it is playing as I type. Now, on to read everyone's responses...

Ugly game tonight with the Lakers turning the ball over nearly 20 times. They need to hurry up and get into playoff form. They should stomp teams like the Bulls by 30... I think they can get it together come playoff time. Everyone knows the Lakers are the team least affected by not having home court advantage.

I like hockey for the amazing ways the puck can be scored or passed. All the same, as a person who does not iceskate, I've always found it a little difficult to get into and less accessable than hoops or baseball or football or golf or many other sports I like better. Without the fighting, hockey would take up less time on Sportscenter--so I'm all for it. I felt bad for the guilty hockey player as I watched him cry last night. Once, I lost my temper playing basketball and hurt my friend with a hard foul--I can relate to Bertuzzi's embarassment, anguish, and regret. Apologies don't go far with an assault of this sort.

Hey, Happy Birthday yous two guys!

Congratulations Jim!

My cd changer HAD a fantastic random function which would play every track from 6 cds in a completely unpredictable order. There were no recognizable patterns and every song would play once and only once. Sadly for me, the machine began to malfunction a few weeks ago after years of steady service. Some of the slots suddenly will not read cds.

My copies just arrived today. Disc 1, track 2 playing as I type. Thanks Jim!

Well, my Mom likes country and pop while my Dad prefers silence, so they weren't my biggest influences. However Mom or Dad did have a Best Of Wes Montgomery Verve record stuck in a crate with old Beatles and Rolling Stones records, which was a profound discovery for me. When I was in high school, a good friend of mine inherited a huge collection of records from his father. Listening to those records turned me toward jazz, especially when I heard Coltrane GIANT STEPS and AFRICA BRASS. Then I heard Horace Silver SONG FOR MY FATHER and I knew jazz was my favorite kind of music.

I just got my Blue Mitchell and Stanley Turrentine sets today. Big ol' boxes won't fit anywhere on my shelves, but I do like the packaging for the most part. Beautiful pictures. If I had one complaint, it would be that the plastic cd tray that holds the jewel cases inside the box seems a little on the flimsy side. That said I'm listening to Blue Mitchell disc one as I type and could not be happier with the music. B)

I've had it for a while, and I agree it is some funkin' good stuff. I especially like the Janet Jackson cover, even though I never liked the original Janet Jackson song.

Happy Birthday, Johnny E!

Since I just ordered the Mitchell a few nights ago (along with the Turrentine, my first two Mosaic sets), I will gladly trade cdrs of the Mitchell for cdrs of other OOP Mosaics if anyone missed out.

Rick James' Hair In The Late 70's And Early 80
Noj replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Have you seen "Charlie (Eddie's brother) Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" on the Dave Chappell show? The Rick James segments were hilarious! It was also revealed that Prince is a hooper. Charlie Murphy said to challenge the artist formerly known as symbol to a game of 1 on 1 if you don't believe it. -

I think I have enjoyed this BFT more than any other. It confirms that I have very similar tastes to Man With The Golden Arm, which I had already noticed by reading posts. Thank you MWTGA for the very cool disc. 1. Raucous, a funkin' good track. I can't tell if it is new or old, and I don't know who it is. I would guess this is fairly new. 2. Now the ol' toe is tappin'. Wait a second...the break to a latin dance beat is suprising, and throws me for a loop as to who this may be...yet another change...reminds me of Rahsaan Roland Kirk somehow. 3. Moving right along...awesome song, I instantly like it. I'd buy this. Art Blakey? 4. Infectious, another one I like right off the bat. It is frustrating that I just can't put names with the sounds, I'm betting this track will be met with instantaneous recognition by the more experienced listeners. Great song. Wynton Kelly? 5. Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh? Another great song. 6. The just keep comin'. I LOVE this one. The flute is suprising, very nicely played. No idea. 7. Man, this BFT doesn't quit. Fantastic stuff. Bobby Hutcherson? 8. Lem Winchester? Johnny Lytle? Whoever it is, it is two minutes of goodness. 9. Greeeaaazzzzy little sax drums interlude. I like it, but couldn't venture a guess. 10. Not bad, not exceptionally thrilling. No clue. 11. Short songs are intriguing. A lot is said in a small amount of time. This one echoes the previous track very closely. Can't say I know who it is. 12. Gato Barbieri? 13. A mysterious edge to this one that I really like. What is that instrument? Will go on my list of BFT songs to buy. 14. Continues the tone of the preceding track very well. Is that an accordian? I really dig this. Great drumming. 15. This one has grown on me since the first time I played it a week or so ago. I particularly enjoy the bass player here. No guess. 16. I like the mood created by this one, and I tend to like slower songs so this one suits me well. 17. Again these short songs are my kind of thing. I like those finger snaps. A two minute gem. 18. Oh yeah, slow it down more. I couldn't like this more. Sign me up. Damn, why'd it end so quick? That was TOO short for me, I wanted it to go ten minutes. 19. More great stuff. I'm just repeating myself now, I like every song on this BFT. 20. Good choice for a closing song, it seems to signal the end. Not my favorite on here, but endearing nonetheless. Once again, thanks MWTGA. It will be great to read the discussion and finally the answers, which will definitely result in purchases. B) edited for calling Johnny Lytle "Bobby Lytle"
