Still waiting for a big breakout game from Shaq...he's still missing "chippies." Hard to believe how fast Kemp went from high fly act to fat sloth to unemployed.

This is my first full length Clifford Jordan, though I already had a different version the song "John Coltrane" on a 32Jazz compilation--when I saw it on the track listing I sprang at the opportunity to hear similar music. I rate GLASS BEAD GAMES exactly as highly as Rooster Ties did on the first page of this thread. I am looking forward to reading some typically verbose dissection of this fine specimine... B)

I was intrigued by the comments here, and having never heard Hal Russell I looked this album up on AMG--I was sad to read that Hal died 5 weeks after making this album.

Sharp Nine? Where's DEEP to rave about MARC EDSEL EDELMAN?
-
Thanks Chuck, I'm not sure how else I could have learned something like that.

Thanks Late. I did a search and must have missed that thread. Thanks for checking Dusty Groove, too--I'll have to have them email me when some of these come back in stock. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! B)

I always have trouble finding a costume. Guess I'll be Beldar.

After getting GLASS BEAD GAMES I realized I have little from this label. What Strata East albums would you recommend?

At about 16 I had a friend whose dad gave him a huge collection of records--jazz, funk, r&b, soul, blues...just tons of great stuff. I heard Coltrane's Africa Brass and Giant Steps and I was hooked.

"Easin' In"--man, what a bass line!

Superfly and Slaughter's Big Rip Off are my favorites of those mentioned. I dig the title song from Death Wish, it's the only one I've heard. I haven't heard the whole soundtrack, but "Theme From Cleopatra Jones" is a favorite.

I thought the passing looked exceptionally crisp for the first game of the year. I think Kobe will fit well in the system, he will adjust to the new players once he gets in there. Give him all those open looks Devean George got last night, and he'll knock 'em down (not that Devean wasn't knocking them down). When Kobe is slashing without the ball, catching passes from Karl, it's gonna be ugly. Picture a starting line up of Shaq, Malone, Kobe, Payton, Fox... I wouldn't trade Kobe for any player or group of players in the NBA, period.

Ditto that! Embarassingly enough I have the Lalo Schifrin on a cdr I got from a friend. Thanks again Jim R!

King Funk 45s!!! B)

It's bluesy, greazey, slooooow and mellow. I'm in the same camp as danasgoodstuff--I like it. But I do remember the dissenting opinions from the previous discussion. I threw it on right now as I haven't played it in a bit. "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You?" is reminding me why I should play it more often.

Shaq should shut up and leave it up to the coaches to talk to Kobe if there is a problem. The media doesn't need to hear any of it. Tell it to your team, not the microphone.

How are our board members doing in the fire
Noj replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The fires aren't near me, but this is horrible. I hope they catch the scumbags who started these fires, if arson is indeed the case. 13 dead and 700 homes destroyed. It reeks of smoke outside and to top it off it is unseasonably hot this year. Hellish conditions, let's hope firefighters are able to gain the upper hand. I read that the one near San Diego was started by a lost hunter's flare. -
Put up and shut up. Spoiled brats is exactly right. However, IMO Kobe should shut up first, with all the baggage he's brought to the table this year. The balls of him to make a fuss when he's already put added pressure on the team with his personal problems.

C'mon Bev, tell us how you really feel about this pointless topic.

Good point about JC's slow software, at home it lags big time. My PC at work is insanely fast, part of a gigantic server. I never have to wait for search engines there--I just have to wait for the manager to stop hovering like Lomburgh from Office Space. I like all three, Org, AAJ, & JC, but this place OWNS them. AAJ has been less active since it went down, the other two have just kept right on chuggin'.

I have a few tracks off these on compilations from Laserlight records and they are smokin', particularly the song "Bad Bad Simba." O'Donel cuts loose with some furiously fast playing on that bad, bad, funky, funky track. I am definitely interested in hearing the rest of the tracks on these albums, despite AMG's two-star ratings.

Worse yet, a mongrelization. No, I think the difference lies specifically between drawing inspiration and complete imitation. There must be a unique personality that shows through, even when paying homage to a predecessor.

On my way to get myself a Ultimo Burrito I picked myself up Jimmy Smith COOL BLUES on sale for ten bucks at Virgin. I saw THE NATURAL SOUL there but it wasn't on sale, so I went with the less expensive deal. Besides, I only had THE SERMON, BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK, and ROOT DOWN for a Jimmy Smith collection. COOL BLUES is doing all the right things for me, a great recommendation. I've been paying attention to Lou, and agree he is fantastic here. Did I hear Babs Gonzales call Art Blakey "Art Blakley" though? I'll have to look for BLUES WALK, couw. I'm adding it to the list, thanks! B)

Not any more! I must have got the last copy in stock. Dusty Groove does have that great feature where one can request to be informed via email when something comes back in stock.
