I also just bought this one for the first time Friday night (nice sale at Virgin--RVGs for $9.99). ADAM'S APPLE is an incredibly good album, and these ears aren't suprised. I can't get enough Wayne Shorter, I've also bought NIGHT DREAMER, JUJU, SPEAK NO EVIL, THE ALL-SEEING EYE, and FOOTPRINTS LIVE all fairly recently. They have been getting loads of playtime. At this point I like THE ALL-SEEING EYE the least, though I have no plans to sell it anytime soon.

Since I only have BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK and ROOT DOWN, looks like I can just print this thread for the Jimmy Smith albums to buy after I get THE SERMON. Thanks guys!

I would be willing to spend around $200, maybe a bit more.

Thanks everyone for your input. Any suggestions on an inexpensive turntable for this purpose? I have a *record player*, and that primitive thing was not made for this sort of operation.

Funny, they didn't offer me this Emusic Plus deal. I got some different offer

Matthew, Horry is now a San Antonio Spur.

I agree it will be painful to see Karl in a Lakers' uni. I've hated him for years--always considered him a dirty player. However, The Mailman can shoot the ball from 20 feet, something the Lakers have been needing for some time. On paper Malone looks like a nice fit, but will he be able to adjust to playing off someone other than Stockton? I think Kobe, Shaq, and GP will inevitably spread the floor and Karl will be looking at open shots all year. I've always loved The Glove's game, he's KILLED the Lakers for years. Kobe and GP will make one of the most formidable backcourts in history. I agree, Shaq has sounded hungry all off-season. Look out league, the Lakeshow is going to be tough to stop! I wouldn't want Mutombo on the team--no game whatsoever, just a shot blocker that is getting too old and slow to block shots. Then again, it wouldn't take much to make an improvement over Samaki Walker. Speaking of old, I can't believe Horace is back on the squad... Garnett is a great player, not suprised to see him get so much dough.

I keep all my cdrs on a separate shelving unit from my purchased cds. I labelled them with a black Sharpee, and have hand-written all the song titles on accompanying slips of paper for more than 300 cdrs--something to do while each cdr burns.

My sentiments exactly. A horrendous call.

Son of a...sorry Jim, I didn't read this thoroughly enough, I would have emailed you.

I was flipping through channels last night and stopped on last night's installment when I spotted Chuck D and it looked like he was singing. Since my TV was on mute as usual, I hit pause on my music and turned up the TV volume to hear what exactly Chuck D was up to. By crikey, I was embarassed for him. I had a good chuckle, returned my TV to mute, took my music off pause, and changed the channel. Should have left it on the Yankee game.

Thanks BFrank. If I can find any of these--I've only seen them in sparing numbers at a couple choice shops. May have to order over the internet from somewhere.

I think this is their official site: http://www.blackjazz.com/ EDIT: It seems odd, like the disclaimer is a hack job. I can't get past it to the regular site.

I have Henry Franklin THE SKIPPER and would wholeheartedly recommend it. I also have Walter Bishop, Jr. CORAL KEYS which is pretty cool too. I'm interested in Doug Carn, if anyone has heard his stuff chime in! Phil Ranelin's VIBES FROM THE TRIBE is cool, especially the title track. BTW, the Black Jazz site has a disclaimer about an illegal "Best Of Black Jazz" compilation on Soul Jazz records--might be the one you posted an image of...

Is anyone familiar with how to do this on a Mac? I'd love to burn some of my records to cd for the car.

70's ROCK bands that changed in the early 80's...

I think you're right Moose. After I responded I looked at what I listed and thought, "Well, that's not really what Rooster Ties was after." -

I'm also a fan of The Police, my brothers had their albums. GHOST IN THE MACHINE, ZENYATTA MONDATTA, SYNCHRONICITY were my favorites. I dig some of Sting's solo stuff too. The Fixx, Yes, Talking Heads...I relive my years of listening to KROQ-the local alternative rock station. MOVING PICTURES is the only Rush album I have, if only to know the correct lyrics to "Tom Sawyer." That's one of those songs I would sing along as a kid and make up nonsense words to fill in where I couldn't decipher Geddy Lee's vocalizations. Here's a few of my favorites from the 80s: THE SPECIALS--gotta have "Ghost Town!"-I bought the SNATCH soundtrack just to get that song. fIREHOSE - RAGIN,' FULL ON--bass player Mike Watt is sick with it. I'd love to hear someone who knows punk from the 80s really lay it down... THE COMPLETE Stone Roses, if only for "Fool's Gold"--the bass line is smokin' The Red Hot Chili Peppers - FREAKY STYLEY--way funkier than their more recent work. Cover of Sly & The Family Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay", album produced by George Clinton Jane's Addiction - NOTHING'S SHOCKING--still their best effort. The musicians play dramatically different styles to suit Perry's odd, fascinating lyrics Lenny Kravitz - MAMA SAID--still Lenny's best effort as well-I dig his first three despite the criticisms of him mimicking old styles. He sort of turned into a caricature of himself after the following album made him huge -
Actually, I was hesitant to include ROOT DOWN as well as a couple of others on my list. Embarassingly enough it is one of only two Jimmy Smith cds I own. Hurl all insults and rotten vegetables this way.

Ouch! Coming from a B-3 connoisseur such as yourself, that stings! Jimmy Smith's BN output--I need to invest. I'm sleeping on it. Thanks for the feedback, everyone. B)

It always takes starting a thread to remind me why I'm not great at it.

I imagine for those who got into jazz a long time ago, a good portion of this list are "the basics." These albums have that special something that puts them over the top for me, and I have begun to try to pace the number of times I listen to them. Have you overdosed on any albums? Spun too many times by the local DJ? Can't listen to it anymore? So good you wore the grooves out on the record? Bought several times it is so essential? Were there any one-album wonders...obscure names that produced a timeless, classic album or even just one unbelievably good song? Obscure albums on obscure labels? OOP gems that you've been inclined to listen to for the 1,474th time? Wore out the cassette you dubbed from a friend's vinyl, then were dying for it until you heard it again? What I'm really aiming at is finding out other albums that are as infinitely rewarding as the ones I listed. Maybe something you've heard too many times is something I've never heard at all...so what albums have you played to death? Personally, I tend to not get sick of good stuff for a reeeeaaaaal looooong time. I'll listen to albums I've listened to innumerable times and still enjoy them. Maybe it's a gift.
