  1. Thanks a lot for the suggestions! Looks like MIDNIGHT CREEPER, MR. SHING-A-LING, THE SCORPION, and Jimmy Smith COOL BLUES will have to follow THE NATURAL SOUL (gonna go back and see if that one is still where I saw it). I've got Lonnie Smith LIVE AT CLUB MOZAMBIQUE and MOVE YOUR HAND--both excellent, excellent discs.
  2. Thanks again, AB.
  3. Lou was consistent, that's good to know. Thanks AB. Have his Argo/Cadet dates been re-issued on cd? SIGNIFYIN' and POSSUM HEAD get high ratings on AMG. As the former noj4possumproductions, POSSUM HEAD is something I should have!
  4. I'm on the fence about whether I'm staying on emusic or not. If their quality of mp3s doesn't return to normal soon, I'm outta there. I'm sick of my computer freezing due to error tracks. The last thing I tried to get was Dexter Gordon with Junior Mance at Montreax--the fourth track froze my computer twice and I haven't been back in about a week.
  5. I've got: EVERYTHING I PLAY IS FUNKY ALLIGATOR BOGALOO GOOD GRACIOUS What should I look for next from Lou? I was just looking at THE NATURAL SOUL, and I regret not getting it.
  6. Did you extract the mp3s to your hard drive first? I used to struggle with burning cdrs until learning to do this.
  7. Going out in L.A. is expensive. I'd rather buy CDs or records--they last longer. I had free tickets to the Clipper game the other night--still cost me $100 when all was said and done. McCoy Tyner and Bobby Hutcherson would have been worth breaking bread for, no question. I'm out of the loop as far as live jazz goes, I should look to improve on that, but I probably won't.
  8. Nothing against John Stockton, but "Mr. Clutch" is Jerry West.
  9. I was born and raised in L.A., my teams are the Lakers, Dodgers, and Raiders. I guess I'm supposed to hate the Boston Celtics, SF Giants, and Denver Broncos/KC Chiefs, but I'm one who's more for rooting for my team than hating someone else's. I consider the Clippers, Angels, and Rams sort of secondary teams of mine, except when they play the Lakers, Dodgers, and Raiders. I pull for the UCLA Bruins against the USC Trojans, but really I'll root for both of them against any other team. So much for traditional rivalries...
  10. In Pedro's defense, that sure was an ugly hit by Posada--talk about fighting one off! A lucky, ugly, flailing, fisted, nippler--but a 2 RBI killer nonetheless. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. I would have yanked Pedro right after Matsui's double--if not sooner. Dan is right. Damned Yankees.
  11. Moved over from the other thread... First of all, thanks a lot Jim R for a very cool disc. I received it this evening, I listened through it twice, and took a guess on each song. Gave it my best shot. Participants or Jim R, feel free to explain why my guesses are wrong, if so inclined... 1. "Samba De Orpheus"--I knew the track so I searched on AMG. Vince Guaraldi has one the same length with the right type of personnel, so that's as good a guess as any. 2. Milt Jackson maybe? Very laid back and relaxed, I like it. 3. Every time I hear a mute I think it's Miles, so that's my guess. Continues the laid back vibe nicely. I know I've heard this song and it is bugging me. 4. Pat Martino on a chill pill? 5. Lee Konitz? No idea. 6. I really like this one a whole lot, my favorite of the batch. Hank Jones? 7. Kenny Burrell? No clue. 8. "Chega De Saudade"--Stan Getz? 9. Gerry Mulligan? Haven't the foggiest. 10. Bola Sete? Joao Donato? Couldn't tell ya. 11. a Horace Silver disciple? I know the song and the title won't come to me. Not an inkling. 12. nice driving latin percussion...no clue. Lou Donaldson? 13. Tal Farlow? Beyond me. 14. I don't recognize the voice. Sarah Vaughn? I guess her because I'm totally unfamiliar with her. 15. Yusef Lateef? Reminded me of his tone. 16. Les McCann? Compositionally sounded like a possibility. I found this cd thoroughly enjoyable start to finish. Thanks again Jim R!
  12. This post has been moved to the discussion area.
  13. Syl Johnson "Concrete Reservation"
  14. I agree with Dan and thought Dusty left Wood in too long. It was 5-3 Cubs and Wood started looking like the wheels were coming off.

    Jimmy McGriff

I have a McGriff compilation from Groove Merchant that is excellent. DIG ON IT!
  16. Damn, I love that one.
  17. WAR "L.A. Sunshine" 'L.A. IS MY HOME TOWN! IT'S A FUNKY TOWN!" B)

    Jimmy Smith

Great pics, perfect visuals for THE SERMON which I finally purchased for the first time this weekend (and boy, is it schmokin'!!!!). B) Thanks guys!
  19. I was born in '76. I just barely make a connection with Dusty Baker and the Dodgers, I'd have to break out the history books to know Brooklyn line-ups. I agree that what Zim did was stupid, and he didn't deserve any better than he got. I guess I was just shocked to see an old man hit the turf like that.
  20. Chuck, as a non-musician, I am intrigued by your comments. Can you elucidate as to how "experience playing a wind instrument" would alter how one interprets the sounds? As a parallel, when I was first studying abstract art I thought it was crap compared to representational art. Then I learned to read what abstract artists were communicating and to pick abstract art apart, and it became much more enjoyable to look at. I can imagine listening to an album like THE ALL-SEEING EYE requires that one have a better understanding of the vocabulary with which Shorter was communicating. I have had THE ALL-SEEING EYE for a short while, and I have found it less immediately accessible than other Shorter albums. Still, there is something there that says "keep this one" to me...
  21. Dan, I definitely didn't mean to say that it was Pedro's fault, and I think Zimmer behaved foolishly. I was with the announcers on Pedro's gestures to the Yankee bench, but who knows what was really being said.
  22. Weizen, I stopped doing the repetitious cancel/resume thing when it started freezing my computer up. I've also found that very often the tracks that will not immediately download are very often the same tracks that won't extract. I was trying to get Monk's ALONE IN SAN FRANCISCO and it was absolutely riddled with error tracks. I'm betting it won't extract. Oh well, it's one I should buy anyway.
  23. As a Dodgers fan, I could care less about either of these teams--just to let everyone know I'm impartial. From what I saw, Zimmer was running and appeared to be throwing something of a punch with his left just as he got to Pedro. My dad and I agreed that Pedro should have just side-stepped him and avoided him, but we also agreed that Pedro seemed suprised. Maybe he expected Zimmer to stop and confront him verbally rather than physically, and didn't have time to do anything else. I dunno, an old man like Zimmer, you'd think Pedro could have just grabbed him. Either way, I thought Pedro's gestures to the Yankee bench in the top half of the inning showed a lack of class.
  24. Thanks Jeff, I'll give that a try next time I'm on.
  25. So I've been scrambling to download stuff I've been meaning to get since the bad news came through. Unfortunately it gets worse, as every album I download has ERROR tracks galore and my computer has stalled out a number of times. Namely, the fourth track on Dexter Gordon LIVE AT MONTREAX froze my shit twice. Aggravating as hell, I certainly won't renew my subscription if this is the kind crap I'll have to deal with. To top it off, I can't access the HELP page to tell them how I feel about it.
