I acquired this one via a trade with another member here, and I'm really liking it. AMG discusses Pullen as sort of avant-garde but this set is quite accessible. His band is the "African-Brazilian Connection" and I am a big fan of that sort of cross-pollination, so perhaps that is why it appeals. At any rate, I'm seeking recommendations of other sessions in Pullen's catalog that approximate this sound. Thanks in advance!

Please talk to me about this session! I'm a big fan of afro-beat and afro-jazz type stuff.

I just got this- Journey's End. Great stuff. Inspires me to look for more Miroslav.

ejazzlines had the 20-bit TOCJ of Rajah awhile back, as noted in another thread. A GREAT deal, given how hard to find that particular CD is. I hope some board members picked it up while they had it! ejazzlines

Aug. & Sep. 2007 - US Blue Note RVG CD Reissues
riverrat replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Thanks for clarifying. OK, so now we have TOCJ, TOCJ24, CC, Connoisseur, RVG, JRVG a few MFSL and now KRVG versions of Blue Note CD reissues. So how do the KRVG versions sound in comparison to the others? What happens when you reverse the polarity of your speaker wires? (Newer board members may not understand why this is so significant...) JUST KIDDING!!!!! -
Aug. & Sep. 2007 - US Blue Note RVG CD Reissues
riverrat replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Flight to Jordan is one my favorite Blue Notes. Despite owning the JRVG, I've also hung on to the Collector's Choice version because of the two bonus tracks- "Diamond Stud" and "I Should Care"- different songs rather than alternate takes which do not appear on the JRVG. I wonder if these two bonus tracks will be included on the RVG? This is related to another issue that I have not heard definitively resolved- I seem to recall hearing that after about 2003, JRVGs and RVGs used the same remasters. So it will be interesting to see if Flight to Jordan RVG has the two extra tracks. Perhaps I should just quit worrying about this...great music in any case! -
(Apologies if this has already been posted, didn't see it anywhere.) Jazz Loft has a bunch of HatHut titles on sale, one week only. I don't know the first thing about their catalog, but I saw this notice posted on another board and thought I'd pass it on. HatHut sale

Good to hear that Eastside is still there. I was in there once - probably about 1990- looking over a used copy of a Fela Kuti CD and the guy hanging out behind the counter, who said he sometimes DJ'd on that radio show "Afropop Worldwide" told me to buy it. Sure glad he did, I became a huge fan. Many a memorable evening was spent going native to a Fela soundtrack under the moon on some beach along the River.

In the Phoenix area, I like the Tempe and the university district the best. Take University Drive east off of I-10 south. Both of the CD stores I listed used to be right on that street, a few miles east of the freeway. Lots of good eateries too. ASU has something like 40,000 students... RE the main "deep hole"- assuming you mean Grand Canyon. Well worth the drive. Interesting change of ecological zones going from saguaros up to ponderosa pine country around Flagstaff. If you have time, detour through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon and into Flag via that route. VERY scenic, and some nice spots to get out and actually walk around on the red sandstone. It isn't much longer, but a fair amount slower due to the windy 2-lane highway and rubber necking. West Fork of Oak Creek makes a nice walk. Many people find the Sedona area more fun than the Grand Canyon, because the Canyon is so hard to interact with unless you are willing to commit a fair amount of time and energy to backpack into it, or a fair amount of time and $$ for a river trip. I highly recommend the latter, perhaps because I devoted so much of my life to them- 130 plus trips, 2 weeks each, hence my monicker. Flagstaff is pretty clogged up with traffic for a town of its size, but you have to go through there to get to GC. I bought a lot of CDs at Gopher Sounds in Flag through the years I lived there (1975-99). Heading out of town towards the Canyon, the drive up to the ski area and San Francisco Peaks is nice, 7 miles off the highway. They used to run the chairlift in the summer, up to 11,800' for some nice views clear to Grand Canyon and beyond. IMO, Phoenix is kind of a hellhole, especially in the summer. Aside from CD stores and ethnic eateries, not much to offer besides recreational shopping in air conditioned malls. As Ed Abbey put it "Phoenix is nothing more than a little cancerous piece of LA that someone planted in the desert and added water to." At least LA has an ocean by it...

Been quite awhile since I was there, but there was a place on University Drive in Tempe called Samurai Happy Bowl that served a fine bowl of teriyaki. Small light blue cinderblock place, really classy... Tempe had a couple of good CD stores, seem to recall one called Eastside Records, and another about a block away called Zia Record Exchange, but again that was several years ago. EDIT: Just googled and they are all still there!

Blue Note/EMI/Capitol/Pacific Jazz Recommendations
riverrat replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
I'm surprised Leapin and Lopin hasn't been RVG'd yet. One of my top ten Blue Notes. -
Great, thank you Guy!

I recall an extended thread discussing whether some of these titles are going OOP. I recall that the upshot was that they ARE starting to go OOP, and the thread also included recommendations for which ones to look for before that happens. I can't seem to find the thread. Searching for "OJC" doesn't work since the search engine won't take 3 letter searches and "Original Jazz Classics" didn't turn it up either. Unless I'm missing something, the search engine won't let you search complete phrases. Could someone please direct me to the thread on OJCs going OOP? Thanks!

mr jazz, when I "upped" this thread a couple days ago, I cross posted in the "Recommendations" forum. Got a lot more response/visibility there. You might get more responses by posting your question in the similar thread there.

More great recommendations, thanks. Any opinions on The Time is Right?

Yes, but there are definitely some new offerings this time. And I for one would rather be over than under-notified of such sales. Some of them appear to be from the TOCJ-24 series, and are probably still in print. No rush on those, but the prices are good and the two that I have sound very good. As Late points out, the Mobley Curtain Call and Lee Morgan Rajah from the TOCJ 1600 series have been nearly impossible to find. I am almost sure they are new listings. The prices listed are very good considering what they usually go for (there's a copy of Curtain Call on eBay right now for $50) and if I didn't already have both of those I would snap them up. Both are great sounding 20-bit remasters. Rajah is worth it for the Cal Massey tune (Pilgrim's Funny Farm) alone...

Rosewood had a single CD release a few years back. You should be able to find a copy. Thanks, yes Rosewood seems to be widely available. I guess I need to go the Mosaic website and figure out the names of the CBS sessions. I also drummed up some responses by cross-posting in the "Recommendations" forum.

Good luck garthsj. As a veteran of three "lite" back surgeries (microdiscectomies, no fusions) I sympathize. But they are getting pretty good these days, and it sounds as if you are athletic. That is a huge plus. The physical therapist will be your best friend....

Late, if you are aware of a place to get Bemsha Swing in a Japanese version, please let me know! That is one I'm definitely ISO...

Let me know how it goes searching for "Song of Songs" over there king ubu. Walmart still shows it in stock here, for about $13 US. If they won't ship to Europe, I could order it and ship it to you. The Enja website lists "Lotus Flower" as available, but who knows if this is actually true: Lotus Flower
