Using Leo Valdés's discography, I'd say - Solo Flight is probably Columbia CG 30779, from 1972 (which Chris Albertson produced.) - The "Sextets" could be "Benny Goodman Combos" from 1951 (CL 500)? - The Vox issue of the Minton's jam sessions seems to have been a 78 RPM, 3-disc album from 1947 (earliest issue, I guess). - The Edmond Hall could be a 10" (Memorable Sessions in Jazz, BLP 5026, 1953) or a 12" (Celestial Express, B-6505, 1969). The complete Newport Rebels ? Not really. Just the tracks issued on the LP with that title, but not the complete session Sorry, that's exactly what I meant, the idea being (or seeming to be) that you get this 3-CD set and you don't need to buy any Mingus CDs from Candid, nor the Newport Rebels CCD79022 for just two non-Mingus tracks. And yes, Candid has quite a problem with duplication. F [Edited for mistake] -

FWIW, Candid sells many of their own CDs at 5 pounds/CD, here. By the look of it, "Cliff Walk" and "Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do" have been included so the complete Newport Rebels is in this set. F -
I don't know if it'll have everything you're looking for, but you should check Billboard magazine. It's online and searchable thru Google. For instance, search for Prestige 1949-1969. Good luck, F

Probably because the big corporations will not lose enough money due to those reissues. Given EMI's situation and The Beatles catalogue so close to begin becoming public domain, it'll be interesting how much pressure they put on the EU to change the law. Cliff Richard et al tried and failed. In any case the recorded music business is changing so fast that who knows what'll happen. And jazz is tiny in that big scheme of things. F PS FWIW mechanical rights expire after 50 years in the EU. Composers' rights and rights on photographs/images/album covers last longer, although these (the rights on photographs) are systematically ignored. -

About Ruppli, he's done his last label discographies (Atlantic, which I think is out already, ABC-Paramount, Blue Note, and Capitol) on CD-ROM through Names & Numbers (the Dutch discography magazine). The discographies come as searchable PDF files. The Blue Note updates the previous books, and it's been done with Cuscuna onboard. Also, regarding sources and acknowledgements, it's very nice of Lord nodding at his predecesors, but as far as costs and time are concerned, I'd take issue at the fact that he (they?) seems to do none of the double checking work others did (especially Raben - whose care seems to have been his downfall, which is a very depressing moral to his story). Mike Fitzgerald's discography project (www.jazzdiscography.com) seems to me the way to go: a systematic approach (thanks to Steve Albin's Brian software) for anyone to follow, which makes you follow, almost automatically, a set of standards regarding rigour, fact-checking and sources. Because it's online, it can be updated automatically, and contributions are very easy to add. F PS: Noal, THANKS for putting the Gryce discography on line!

I spoke to Hiroshi through Facebook and he's OK, but pissed off about poor information. He's originally from Sendai and hadn't had any news from family and friends there as of an hour ago. F

This is probably no news for everyone here, but Amazon UK look like they're disposing of their Sony stock (... actually, not only Amazon, Fopp in London has had some good offers). Anyhow, the Complete Miles Davis w/ Coltrane, and w/ Gil Evans are at a very good price, the budget version of the complete Billie Holiday on Columbia too, etc. They make very nice presents, methinks. Albert Murray Speaks

Since we know now that this is not true (and they could have known it as far back as the early 1950s, tell me with a straight face that Zoot Sims or Bob Brookmeyer didn't swing back then), is he talking jazz before 1945? Silly question, I know, but is the worst black jazz musician better than the best white jazz musician? It can be argued that years ago black musicians knew jazz better because they grew up in a social environment where they were in contact with that music from a very early age, and due to racial discrimination, whites weren't. Racial discrimination is caused by the inability to relate to someone who's physically different, mainly because of skin pigmentation, and it is a D-I-S-G-R-A-C-E. But to pretend that socially things haven't changed in America and that today being black somehow gives you a headstart to play jazz, I don't know, it doesn't make sense to me. White people in general discriminating against black people because of race may have created the social circumstances for blacks to be way better at playing a certain kind of music. But that doesn't imply that black people are better (or worse) at anything because of race, does it? F -
For pianists only was conceived and arranged by Mal Waldron. It carries an attached 12" x 12", 20-page booklet with a two-page introduction by Waldron and the rest are scores of the tunes (for piano, including chord symbols and lyrics). In his intro, Waldron gives a general explanation of the album and then gives an outline of each of the tunes and his arrangements. F

Got the CDs, thanks!

I actually have this LP. It's a gatefold and it carries scores for the tunes in it. These are albums for the buyer to play along with. Let me know if you need more info. As for the market for this kind of record, according to a survey carried out by Down Beat in 1959, their average reader was a 26-year old male who played an instrument. F
