  2. I just hope Cohen doesn't tire of doing the Ali G TV show and we can soon look forward to a new season of controlled tasteless insanity However, for some reason , the Bruno character doesn't ring my chime like Ali and Borat do. I really would like to know what the political "guests" are told in the pre-interview phase to get them to play along with what they're about to experience.. some ( like Pat Buchanan ) seem to enjoy it, others look like they think they're being had .. ..well ..they are .. boulyakousch ..and respeck!
  3. Kellerman and his main charachter , Alex Delaware along with his gay cop sidekick Milo Sturgis form the basis of one of the very best mystery series of the past 10 years. I recommend all of his books! The allusions to jazz are frequent in that Delaware is an accomplished amateur guitarist and also lives with his main squeeze ( Robin ) who is a sought after luthier in the LA music scene.
  4. Ron : If you really want your nose opened to what Greta does, go to the Origin website and check out some of the clips from her CDs .. better yet, check out her website: http://gretamatassa.com/index.html I'll betcha end up copping at least one of 'em!! Phil K

  6. Well, thats damn big of y'all Chewy! I may pass on the cheese ( oops, came out wrong ..), but I can certainly snorf down a wee bit of Macallans 18 single malt wwith you ..should you ever be in my neck of the woods!

  10. Up here in Beautiful Green Baja Vancouver BC ( 16 mi from the border due N as the snow geese fly ) About 55 F gray and misty .. maybe it'll dry out a bit mid week -temps maybe in mid 60s ..
  11. Theres also an excellent alto player named Dan Blunck from Olympia ..
  12. In addition to Jovino, Seattle is blessed with a large number of great pianists ..including: John Hansen, Marc Seales, Randy Halberstadt, Darin Clendenin, Butch Nordahl , and Ryan Burns. It also boasts an unusualy cadre of quailty UPRIGHT bassists : Chuck Deardorf, Clipper Anderson, Jeff Johnson, Phil Sparks, Larry Holloway among them. and let's not forget: Jay Thomas ( a quadruple threat on both trumpet and reeds ) Thom Marriot, Vern Seilert and Paul Mazzio ( from Portland ) on trumpets, Mark Taylor, Travis Ranney, Jim Coile, Hans Teuber, Hadley Caliman, and Bill Ramsay are all great sax players ( All these are from the Origin "Artists" list -and can be checked out there )
  13. Indeed. Also check out Pony Boy Records for some excelletn Seattle players; http://www.ponyboyrecords.com/files/pony_boy/pony_index.html Our top Trombone Players include David Marriott and occasionally Julian Priester, who I believe is based here, but seems to just pop up now and again in clubs. A hand full of other very good 'bonists. There is a broad tier of players not quite that acomplished in Seattle too. Lots of jazz, lots of players, lots of interest, a bit of money. Nice people, great food, better weather than advertised. -tk
  14. I've lived up in the NW for some nine years in Bellingham WA, and I can state that jazz is definitely alive in well in the Seattle /Tacoma Area ( and in the Portland area as well ). Seattle has many fine resident musicians , a number of venues ,several yearly jazz fests, and a decent fan base. You might want to check out the AAJ Seattle jazz guide available in PDF format on a companion jazz BBS . You might also want to investigate the Origin Records artist roster ( a very well respected jazz label based in Seattle ) Many of their artists ( including myself ) are Northwestern based and display a wide range of stylistic approches . In addition, you might check out the websites of Jazzy Alley, Tulas, the Triple Door, and the EArshot Jazz Festival ..plus the annual Centrum Jazz Festival held every July in Port Townsend WA ( a short ferry ride from the Seattle side of Puget Sound ) All this plus a great overall quality of life ( save the omnipresent traffic hassles ), magnificent scenery, and great seafood! Hope this gets you started! Phil Kelly Northwest Prevailing Winds ( Origin Records ) www.philkellymusic.com
  15. Hi Guys: I know I've been gone from the Org - BBS for quite a spell, but for the past year, I've been gearing up to record my follow-up CD to 'C-Zone" - writing, planning ,and most importantly, scuffling bread together to accomplish this project .. I can now happily report that I got it recorded last week ..and this time in LA with a REAL A team band!!!! Basically,I hate LA ..but I LOVE these guys! Wayne Bergeron and his crew played their collective asses OFF!! Without a doubt, these were some of the best sessions I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. These guys buckled down and gave 110% on everything and seemingly had a great time doing it. I'd done any number of "business" gigs out there before and always felt most of the players were somewhat lackadaisical -sorta phoning it in. That was definitely NOT the case this time!! ( Plus: the icing on the cake was I came in on budget ..and even let the band go a half hour early the first day. ) We recorded at the same studio Bob Florence used exactly five days later. Martin Sound ( in Alhambra -a part of LA I'd never been in before ) It is a very nice comfortable big room and the guys all seemed to like working there. My engineer was Tally Sherwood- who also has done the John LaBarbera and Steve Houghton Gershwin projects among many other jazz projects.. A Real laid back guy with great large band jazz ears, and combined with all the great takes we got, editing and mixing this deal will be fairly easy. The serependitious part of the whole deal is that Talley is originally from Bellingham WA ( where the SGUD Missile silo is located ) This means he can come up HERE in a month or so for a "working family visit " to edit and mix the project... at a very nice small ProTools studio in downtown B/Ham ..ten minutes from my house! ( Recording these days sure is a different experience ) What we recorded: Jeannine ( the old Duke Pearson /Cannonball tune ) Bluelonius ( my sloooooow blues tribute to guess who -Lanny Morgan and Brian Scanlon are killing on this one ) Day dream ( Ellington-Strayhorn ) Pleading Dim Cap ( a kinda "out" screamer based on dimished scales ) Zip Code 2005 ( A reworking of my old "Zip City " from the '73 Bill Watrous MWR album .. with a new ending and some re-working of the interior lines) Body and Soul ( a solo tour de force for baritonist Bill Ramsay -) Lazy Afternoon ( a feature for the GREAT pianist, Bill Cunliffe ) *Just Juan Beatov Stomp ( a slightly tongue in cheek latin /funk piece in 7/8 time ..hence the title ..a great workout for Grant Geissman and Cunliffe ) **My Museum : A ballad I co-wrote with a gal named Marissa Dodge - Bartlett ( featuring a beautiful reading by my favorite NW vocalist, Greta Matassa ) Total time is approx: 59 minutes plus ( thus reinforcing the running gag Bob F and I have going that at about 70 minutes, Bobs is "definitely longer than mine!" ) The probable title of the CD is "My Museum" ..no specific hook , except the CD is like an exhibition of both my latest works, and some retrospective reworkings of mine and others older songs. I hope to have it out late summer /early fall -again on Origin Records. Tpts: Wayne Bergeron ( lead, also contractor ) Dan Fornero Pete De Sienna Bob Summers ( Jazz ) Bones: Andy Martin ( lead and jazz ) Charkie Morillas Dave Ryan Michael Millar ( B/ Tbn ) Reeds: Lanny Morgan ( lead ) Gary Foster ( both altos, alto flutes ,and c flutes ) Pete Christlieb Brian Scanlon ( both tenors and clarinets ) Bill Ramsay ( Bari*and Bass Car. ) Rhythm: Bill Cunliff ( keys ) Grant Geissman ( gtr ) Tom Warrington ( Bass ) Steve Houghton ( drums ) Brian Kilgore ( perc) additional personnel ,etc.: *Rhythm on "Juan Beatov": Drums: Dan Wojciechowski El.Bass: Gerald Stockton Guitars: Bud Guin ,Grant Geissman Keys: Bill Cunliffe Perc: Brian Kilgore **" My Museum" Piano: Darin Clendenin Bass: Clipper Anderson Vocal: Greta Matassa Strings: Diane Kitzman- concertmistress ( Dallas strings ) "My Museum "Track recorded by David Lange @ David Lange Studio, Tacoma WA Strings and Juan Beatov rhythm track recorded by David Giangulio @ TM Century in Dallas TX So anyhow ..now I'm back ..and a very happy camper!! 16. One would think your blanket licences with ASCAP/BMI should cover such usage ..but then again, I'm no lawyer One of the things that really gets crazy is ( like in the original cited documentary case ) the fact that in addition to a given SONG ( and its composer and publisher ) , you're going for a specific RECORDING and PERFORMANCE ( the rights to which are probably controlled by yet another party-record company ,etc. .. also, by wanting to use it in another medium ( the documentary ) you then have to negotiate the mechanical and sync rights on top of all the other BS as well! When I recorded my CD in 2003 ,I went through the Harry Fox Agency and paid a statue fee to record a speciific song ..no big thing .. BUT: after the release of the CD, I discovered I couldn't SELL the chart through my publiher until I got yet ANOTHER clearance to permit me to sell my arrangement until I got a further clearance for that! had I known that, I would have thought twice about whether or not to record the song.
  17. I too am sufficiently old enough to recall these things from my youth in the '40s. I don't really remember whan the disappeared, but I don't recall them in high school ( early 50s )
  18. Somebody wants me to do a big band chart on this tune for a record date ,and I can't find a lead sheet anywhere ..I've been thru a big pile of various fakebooks and even checked for an mp3 download to transcribe, but no soap! If anyone has something on this puppy, PM me .. I'd really appreciate it!
  19. Hey Dr. F! Thanks for the CZ exposure! I've been enjoying your webcast on and off for the past several months and I've marked 9/9 on my calendar! BTW: the **second CD** is coming soon !! ..I've got it pretty well finished writingwise and the finances together ..I hope to get it recorded early this winter. 20. I won't pile on about Sonny Greer again ..( I don't want Nessa after my ass again! ) As far as Butch Miles goes, he's okay ( I recently heard him with the Basie Ghost Band ) ..sorta like "Buddy Rich lite "..he's got the motions down, the look, and he does nail most of the stuff, but I guess I just have a subjective diferrent philosophy about what I want to hear from a drummer in a big band, and my ideal model begins with the the late Mel Lewis. Today, my favorite big band guys are my drummer ( of course ) Gary Hobbs ..as well as Peter Erskine, Joe LaBarbera, Steve Houghton. I also like Bernie Dreisel and Gregg Bissonette. As far as the younger small group guys ,I like Greg Hutchison, Tain, Lewis Nash, Kenny Washington along with several others I cant recall right now with my ongoing cas of CRS syndrome BTW: I too preferred Gus Johnson to Sonny Payne in the old 50s Basie band ...
  21. Tony ..all time champeen .. the established guys: ( aside from the obvious Roach, Blakey, Klook, et al ) DeJohnette Joe LaBarbera Gary Hobbs Lewis Nash Kenny Washington Vinnie Coliauta of the newer guys: Greg Hutchison Billy Kilson Tain El Negro
  22. Han Bennik really bugs me ... Dave Weckl has improved a bit of late, but his playing still overall makes me itch... Any swooshy, ping-ping, faux Paul Motian impressionistic type drummers that CANT LAY DOWN TIME outta be lined up against a wall and summarily shot . Gimme a rifle! Butch Miles while not terrible, seems over-rated IMO .. BTW: I was quite surprised that Clint didn't care for DeJohnette ..I find him to be quite excellent!
  23. Speaking of overdone warhorses: I forget exactly what show it was on, but several years ago, some nutjob went to the trouble of videotaping a WHOLE flotilla of cheezoid lounge singer /pianists ( some far worse than others ) all doing "Misty" .... ..and splicing them together a phrase at a time, thereby creating a two and a half chorus visual and audio collage that while musically horrifying, was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen on TV! I do think its time someone did that to "My Funny Valenzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....zzzzz
  24. The opening up of the jazz pallette to modal harmony, "outside" lines , and various rhythmic devices seems to have made a lot of current jazz not as amenable to the kind of melodic lines Golson ,Silver,Dameron, came upu with in the 50s. Having said that, a case could be made that some of Herbie Hancock, Chick Coreas ,and Wayne Shorters songs could be considered jazz "standards" IMO
