Flurin, knowing a bit about your tastes, I don't think you will like it. It's too similar to Old and New Dreams - to a point of intentional copy (drums sound is very Blackwell, and Redman plays a lot of his father's licks), but the writing is definitely not on the same level. Well played, of course, but very safe. Sounds quite contrived and forced to me.

The disc is merely OK (admittedly, I did not get to the end yet). A lot of the music sounds like going through the motions. I also didn't like Ches Smith's playing. He plays too much with too few ideas and with this ugly boomy drums sound (IMHO, of course). Does not fit the sound pallet. And his persistent falling back on steady beat is annoying. Overall, the combination of personalities is not that good a match, although I would probably be interested in hearing a duo of Parker and Taborn. Not sure about Mr. Smith, but there is definitely better stuff available from Parker, Holland and Taborn. Regarding hard leftists in Western Europe, I really wish they shared my experience of staying in a line for one hour to buy one loaf of bread in Moscow in 1980s. I definitely acknowledge the imperfections of the capitalist system, and they can and should be managed and corrected, but socialism (or communism) is really not the way. I see pampered starry eyed students here in Vienna with barely coherent leftist ideas - this is understandable and sort of cute. But when somebody in his 70s is still there, I have less understanding for this.

Checked out the "Journey..." album out on Spotify. Average tenor player (with pretty sound), quite square, not too adventurous, and lick-heavy drummer, who sounds like Andrew Cyrille quite a bit. Very predictable. This probably would have sounded conservative already in '66.

I don't disagree, all I've heard is mostly really solid stuff. But enough about this new shit. Let's discuss a Coltrane's rehearsal tape!!!!!!!! Or wish Happy Birthday to somebody who's been dead for 30 years!!!!!!

Well, if it does, here is some more wild Roslavets. This is on par with anything written at that time (1920s), as far as I am concerned. I don't think there are commercial recordings available.

Roslavets - Works for Piano Such an excellent, innovative composer, he could have probably written so much more were he not brutally persecuted.

I am not the biggest fan of Haydn (although I greatly prefer him to Mozart, whom - with a few notable exceptions - I really cannot listen to), but this is nice music and excellent performance for sure.

I agree. The sound is nasal and quite ugly, and range of expression us much narrower than with tenor. "My Favorite Things" album is probably my least favorite thing Coltrane recorded. The solos are sort of ornamental and very repetitive (and Tyner's solo on the title track is not much to talk about either), and I remember on "Every Time We Say Goodbye" the horn sounded rather out of tune. This is a tough horn to make sound good, and to my ears it did not work out for Coltrane. There were and are more interesting soprano saxophone players around.

I have a few of his older CDs (Triage on Okka, and something else), I think I even saw him live once (with Vandermark), and found him nothing special. But the tracks posted in the article sound really good. Will buy a couple of downloads. And it is great what he's doing in the music community, this is a lot of work, I guess.

Sad to hear about Mr. Neidlinger's death. What an excellent musician. Releases on his K2B2 label are very enjoyable. Hope the distribution does not fold down with his passing.

I have not listened to Herr Brötzmann in years, but right now I am listening to Jeff Platz / Kit Demos / John McLellan "On Pulsar": I did not know of Jeff Platz, but I was looking for something featuring very interesting drummer John McLellan (who sadly passed away since this thread started). Very happy I stumbled upon this trio recording, McLellan's playing is fascinating. John (or Johnny) McLellan can be heard on an outstanding duo CD with Joe McPhee 'Grand Marquis' (on Boxholder). I would probably disavow half of the recommendations I made in this thread back in the day, but 'Grand Marquis' is still one of my favorite Joe McPhee's recordings - 14 years after I mentioned it hear.

"I never go back to Europe!!!" Great CD, got it accidentally 15 years ago, have been listening to it regularly with pleasure. The guitarist on it, Giancarlo Nicolai, is outstanding. He had a couple of good records on Leo, but "Tomorrow" has his best playing (from what what I've heard, at least). Don't have anything else by Schärli, need to get me some, I guess.

I think a genius creates something radically new, something beyond what has even been considered possible before them. Geniuses, be definition, are extremely rare. I would consider just a few in music overall to be geniuses: Monteverdi, Bach, Stravinsky, Ravel, Stockhausen, Scelsi, Monk, Captain Beefheart, John Butcher. Maybe: Ellington, Zappa, the Beatles as collective genius, Erwin Schulhoff.
