  1. How is this one from Byrd? Is $20 too much to pay? I like Byrd in Hand, Byrd in Flight, Slow Drag, Blackjack. I see Fuego is from 1959 which would suggest I might like it as the Byrds I don't like tend to be late 60s, 70s work especially with the Mizell Brothers.
  2. Let me guess, you took Nyquil. Nyquil has an antihistamine which usually makes people sleepy as well as a little alcohol but it also contains decongestants which are stimulants and in some people (ie you) the stimulant wins out and can keep you up. The decongestant is also the ingredient that can muck with your blood pressure. It's better to treat symptoms with separate drugs. Take Benadryl and something else for the cough like Robitussin DM (no decongestant)
  3. Sometimes your circadian rhythm can get confused and your body gets mixed up on when it should sleep. The result is no "good" sleep. Some easy steps to set things right are to try to go to bed at the same time each night to reestablish a rhythm of sleep. You can use a sleep agent to help for awhile but long term they can make matters worse. Your doctor can prescribe an agent but really, good old Benadryl works pretty well. (That's what is in Tylenol PM and most other over the counter sleep agents so just get the cheap stuff and take 50mg) Sleep disturbances are also sometimes the result of stress or underlying depression and treating these conditions will help the problem.
  4. Well, I lasted only one day before I broke down and opened my Duke Pearson Select which is supposed to be a Christmas gift. Listened to the Christmas tunes in the car while looking at lights with my wife and kids and really enjoyed it. When the disc ended and the disc went to track one, I wasn't so thrilled. The vocals really are beyond me I guess. When I got home I listened to disc 1. Usually I'm not too excited about electric pianos and latin percussion and FLUTES. This usually means you're on the slippery slope to SMOOTH JAZZ. But Pearson had me deep in the groove. He pulls it off without being cheesy like the Mizell Brothers.
  5. Got my Chambers and Pearson Selects last night (Christmas gifts from my parents) Since I won't be seeing them for the holidays, should I wrap them and place them under the tree or open them? Third choice (my favorite) is to open them up then wrap the boxes only.
  6. I asked this question once before and no one really had an answer but... Does anyone know how many Conns have gone out of print secondary to poor sales vs reaching to series' limit? I would be curious to see a list of the titles fitting each category.
  7. Could someone let Blue Note that I would be glad to "store" some discs at my place.

    30 new RVGs!!

I just looked up the upcoming releases on Jazzmatazz because I couldn't remember all of the upcoming RVGs for 2004. Did I miss something recently? There are 30, THIRTY!! scheduled to come out by summer. I didn't remember there being this many in the works. I am totally pumped as I have very few of these titles. Duke Pearson, Curtis Fuller, Dexter Gordon lots of exciting titles!!
  10. I just got a call from my dearest mother who said she and my father would like to get me some discs for Christmas and since she has no idea what a Mosaic is that I should order a couple sets for myself as a gift from them!! Paul Chambers and Duke Pearson will look great under my tree!!
  11. Stevie Ray tipped his hat to Kenny Burrell with a version of Chitlins Con Carne. TBone Walker and Gatemouth Brown played very jazzy blues and their musical descendants Duke Robillard, Pat Boyak, Ronnie Earl (has done versions of Idle Moments and Round About Midnight on recent albums and Jimmy McGriff was featured on his album Healing Time) continue in the tradition. Robben Ford previously played with Miles is playing "modern" blues.
  12. My main categories are Jazz, Rock/Pop, Blues, International, Counrty (my Willie and Johnny discs + my wife's discs), Christmas Then I go alphabetical by artist. Within the artist's section I arrange chronologically by recording date with compilations at the end.
  13. Is the Blue Train (remastered) on BMG the new RVG?
  14. Is that "James Brown" super bad or "The BeeGees with Peter Frampton in Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band" super bad?
  15. I just got BOSS TENORS IN ORBIT from BMG. This is by far the UGLIEST CD I own. I have just about decided not to buy any more Verve issues because the packaging sucks!!! Here's my top reasons why. 1. They shrink the cover art to "embellish" it with some kind of psycho drug trip border. (Is this supposed to make the music more attractive to young listeners?) 2. The art work inside. Text going every which way, colors everywhere - it's just too busy!) 3. Paper package - less durable, no option to switch out case if something happened to it 4. Trifold design - more difficult to open without two hands availabe, especially in the car. 5. "Secret" opening which allows the insert to fall out (and get lost) if the package is not held level at all tiimes.
  16. My favorite CD store in Baton Rouge had a copy or two and I'm sure they still have them. If anyone is really interested they will ship it to you. Just PM me and I'll give you the phone number.
  17. Cruising Half.com earlier I saw a Christmas CD from Jimmy McGriff. Anyone heard this one?
  18. The link on wolff's reply takes you to a japanese site which has it. Look on Page titled Blue Note 4.
  19. To be honest I listen to everything LOUD! Especially in the car. Obivously, anything by Zeppelin or AC/DC Jazzwise, all Blakey but one disc comes to mind and that ROOT DOWN. The bass is so key to my enjoyment I like to feel it.
  20. I recommend this every year but Joe Pass' SIX STRING SANTA is a good one. It was released on Laserlight label and can be found for about $6.
  21. I don't know if you guys considered some live tracks, but that could be another source to fill the disc. Especially if you alredy have some recorded. Heck, if you've got the tapes already, you could burn some live stuff for a CDR to make some dough and satisfy us fans while we wait on the tribute disc and the new studio disc. (More rare recordings for my future Ebay auction as well!)
  22. Does no one else find the possibility of this being Jims organ funny? I laughed my but off at this thing
  23. I think I'll buy several. That way when you guys hit it big I can sell these limited edition, underground discs on ebay and retire!!
  24. In case you missed it in the Hammond Organ Links thread, I posted a picture of B3er's "new equiptment." Check it out link The cover should be Cat Shatner playing that thing!
