  1. I like Real Madrid a lot as well. For some reason Fox Sports World doesn't show any La Liga. They show matches from England, France, Netherlands, Germany and to lesser extent Argentina and Brazil but no Spanish league. What's up with that? Anyway I was very dissappointed to see Real go out. That late consolation goal by Monoco in the first leg should haunt Real and their fans for a while. Any fans of Fulham on board? I've started paying more attention since Bocanegra and McBride joined. They sorely miss Saha. Boa Morte is OK but the other forward Hayles seems to have speed but a ball in to him usually stops there and he doesn't score much. I thought McBride was doing pretty well in the first few games he started, a couple goals to show for his efforts. He's been less successful coming in in the last 30 minutes. He seems to create chances for other players a little better than Hayles. What do you think of him? Another Yank over there is Claudio Reyna. Watching the US national team in the past I always wondered what the big deal was and maybe he's less effective because opponents focus on him but he's a great player for Man City. Always creating dangerous chances. What happened to Tim Howard? He was brilliant in goal when he first went over and now he's on the bench!
  2. Someone recently stole my wife's purse and get this... a diaper bag out of our car. It was not locked because it was in our garage. I forgot to close the garage door I guess. The thing is, there was cash on the console, and much more valuable things in the garage but they took the purse which only had some loose change floating around in the bottom and my wife's credit cards and driver's license. They also left the interior light in the car on which ran down the battery.
  3. Anyone keep up with soccer? I'm a fan and since our cable service carries Fox Sports World I've been following the Premiership pretty closely. Arsenal was on a tremendous run of something like 30 games in a row without a defeat and have now dropped back to back games to Man United and Chelsea eliminating them from the FA Cup and the Champions League. They will probably still win the league but after these recent losses who knows. I'd be interested to hear which teams our friends on the board from across the pond follow?
  4. PM sent concerning The Thing To Do!
  5. Don't dream much anymore but when I was a kid I used to have this recurring dream about being at my grandmother's house and playing keep away with a set of keys. It was my family vs some very slow yet terrifying monsters.
  6. Live jazz? Are you kidding? I can't even find recorded jazz! I went to Barnes and Nobles today (usually don't go there because of price) to pick up a new RVG or two. (Finally got my Deepdiscount order from the first March batch) Had Prayer Meetin in mind... surely they have it... right? I mean B&N isn't the best place to get your music but they carry the new releases, especially form THE jazz label.... right? Not to be!! Not a one. The mom and pop shop I went to earlier this month to get Free Form didn't have any new releases either. So it's official, there is nowhere in town where I can buy a newly released RVG on the day of release without asking them to order it in advance. So much for impulse shopping. Thank God for mail order.
  7. I like Caravan. Always like Blakey when Curtis Fuller is on board!
  8. I don't like the sound of new strings as well. Especially the wound strings. Sometimes I leave them on while replacing strings 1-3, 2 or 3 times. I used to use ghs nickel rockers which sound much more mellow when new than say ernie balls, fender or d'addarios. Lately haven't been playing enough to need string changes. By the way not playing jazz guitars or looking for that jazz tone with these strings, mainly playing blues and rock. My guitars are American Standard Fender Strat, Epiphone Les Paul, Danelectro DC57 (Korean reissue from a few years back), a custom strat I made form parts and an Epiphone Broadway archtop which I got on Ebay cheap and has been in the shop for months awaiting a fret job which will hopefully resolve some serious buzz problems ( I bought this one to inspire me to play more jazz.)
  9. I listened to Soul Station and Roll Call just yesterday by coincidence. Soul Station is a disc that I never heard what the big deal was, but each time I listen it gets better and better. I've got most all of these (no Slice of the Top) and the Mobley I reach for most is Roll Call.
  10. Attention Greazy Texans! (perhaps a bit redundant ) Righteous Buddha is going to be in Houston a couple times in April and May. If you get a chance, go check them out. The dates are available on their website RB website They don't have samples on their site currently but a couple are available at the Louisiana Music Factory website samples
  11. Another dimension of my "collector tendencies," (a friendly way of saying OCD) is that I like to have recorded works of acts I've seen live. Several months back I saw the Dirty Dozen Brass Band but I never picked up any of their discs. The other day I picked up Buck Jump on half.com for $5 and can't take it out of the player (except to bring it to my car) I'm really diggin this one. It was produced by John Medeski and he adds some organ a few tracks. The other disc I had my eye on was Voodoo with guests Dr John, Dizzy Gillespie and Brandford Marsalis. Anyone with any thoughts on these two discs? I may just be homesick for south Louisiana since I've moved to Arkansas. The Dirty Dozen are actually passing through Fayetteville TONIGHT but I can't go. Tough week at work and I need my rest.
  12. I getting a little steamed now!! (and not in a good way) It's 8 days after their release and my RVGs are no where to be found!! I preordered form deepdiscountcd.com and I got an email that they shipped about 5-6 days ago but still no discs!! I have never heard Sweet Honey Bee or Goin' West so I am even more anxious to get them.
  13. I've been thinking about getting a sax lately. What did you say the name of that shop was that had the Buescher?
  14. I don't usually like these type discs either, that is my point. I actually like several songs on this one and think some of them rival the originals. Listen to the two versions of Spanish Castle Magic.
  15. I grew up on Breyer's. Vanilla, Peach, Strawberry, Butter Pecan being my favorites. However... They are all CRAP compared to Blue Bell. I don't know if it's available in Michigan but if it's not and your an ice cream lover, I got two words for you ROAD TRIP. This stuff has got me so spoiled I can't even go to Baskin Robins.
  16. ARC Angels was the band with Doyle, Sexton, Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton (Double Trouble - SRVs old band) I think if Clapton has got anything to say musically it will be said on this album. He is so passionate about Robert Johnson's music if anything can inspire him to greatest it aught to be this. Also, knowing he's such a huge fan of RJ, why has it taken 40 years to make a tribute album? I think because he hasn't felt ready to and the fact he feels ready now make me anxious to hear the results. Although he loves Robert Johnson he hasn't always played in that style. In recent years he has really worked on his fingerpicking and this album should showcase the fruits of his labor.
  17. My wife had this in her car and I listened again while out today. I don't care for many tribute type discs but this one ROCKS! Some of the artists / groups really make the songs their own. The Pretenders, The Cure, Pat Metheny. I gotta admit I like Jeff Beck and Seals version of Manic Depression better than the original. One of my favorite Beck solos. Also think Clapton plays with more fire than usual on Stone Free, it's good to hear him cut loose. Buddy Guy playing Red House is as good as expected. The biggest suprise to me is The Spindoctors doing Spanish Castle Magic. Hendrix' version of this one does nothing for me but the Spindoctors totally rock it. I think the vocals are the key. Even Jimi admitted to being weak vocally. If you haven't heard it in a while or maybe never, check it out. It's a truly worthy tribute to Jimi.
  18. B3er's comments in another thread about the whole world wishing George Benson would do a straight ahead jazz record prompted me to post something I've been contemplating lately. Who from the smooth jazz world do you wish would do a straight ahead record? My early answers would be: 1. Of course George Benson for obvious reasons. 2. Russell Malone in an organ trio. He's got that Grant Green / George Benson feel and I would like to see how he would sound in that setting. 3. Chris Botti (don't laugh) I got one of his discs with a coupon at Walmart because this was the closest thing to jazz they had. I like the disc for what it is and think he's a good player with a good tone and especially a good muted tone. His muted tone is not as harsh as Miles' (I don't hate Miles for it as some of us, or at least one of us) I would like to hear him on a record of standards. (actually caught him playing MY FUNNY VALENTINE on that TV talk show he's on and it caught my ear.)
  19. I preordered from deepdiscount and got an email today stating GOIN WEST had shipped but there was no mention of SWEET HONEY BEE which I also ordered! I guess I need to get on board with CD universe for these new releases.
  20. Jeff Foxworthy. I think he would be good for all ages and pretty clean. At a recent family reunion, some of the kids probably 10-12 yrs old had one of his his tapes and it had everyone laughing regardless of age. I found myself enjoying it much more that I expected. One part that I remember a joke about his family going to the airport with an igloo and Pigley Wigley bags for luggage!
  21. I've been listening to a lot of sound samples on CDBABY.COM lately looking for some good greaze. There is so much on that site I thought I would start a thread where we can share our cdbaby discoveries. My first suggestion is Surf's Up by Mo' Fone. This trio consists of two saxes (who alternate playing the bass parts on bari) and a drummer. Interesting stuff, give it a listen.
  22. Never read comics too much so my superhero exposure was Sat. cartoons. So naturally my favorite was Hong Kong Phooey. Had the lunchbox and some pajamas as well! I realize he was pretty inept as a hero and without that cat he was totally useless but I liked him anyway because I thought karate, kung fu etc were really cool. (my previous lunch box was Kung Fu the TV series)
  23. I am an intermediate type guitarist. I play for fun at the house and have only played in front of people on a couple occasions. Mostly I play classic rock and blues stuff and mainly solo in major and minor pentacostal scales Just to give you an idea about my level. Anyway, I would love to expand my playing to include more jazz. I have bought several books but have only found a one to be very helpful HOW TO PLAY SWING GUITAR from Acoustic Guitar Magazine. My problem is that in most books, the charts included don't show fingerings and when using a chord book if you pick the wrong fingerings you could be doing some unecessary fretboard gymnastics. They always say "jazz guitarist rarely play the complete chord" but they don't show you how to finger these chord fragments which I should be playing instead. Trying to play 6 string "complete" chords at a rate of 2-4 per measure is out my ability but I don't think too many people actually play this way and if they do then I will just continue playing blues and rock and forget jazz (as far as playing goes of course.) I saw a book yesterday that may help. It's called IT'S EASY TO FAKE JAZZ GUITAR. Kinda looked like a guitar for dummies tye thing. It seemed to give some tips for playing these partial chords and gives several fingerings for common jazz chords. Has anyone seen this one? It had a lot of other stuff that seemed pretty useless to me but the chord advice looked promising. Any suggestions for a good book/CD to get me started? (this post ended up being pretty long, thanks for your patience in reading it)
  24. It's funny that you mention DING DONGS (AKA KING DONS) On days I don't have POPTARTS, I usally eat 3-4 DING DONGS for breakfast As for being drier in texture, that's not my experience. They actually seem moister but not in a good way more gel like which is somewhat nauseating.
  25. I got another virus through email last night. Got this EMail that seemed innocent enough but when I saved it to a folder I got suspicious and tried to delete it. It wouldn't let me delete the file and I couldn't run Norton's either. After restarting the computer I was able to run Norton's and the file disappeared. A slight annoyance but no harm done. Then... This AM I get up and my wife says "Your computer is doing something funny." And it was. From the internal speaker I'm getting Beep, BEEP, beep, BeeP, bEEp, beeP, BEEP, beeP, BEEP, BeeP, beep. (think R2D2 on crack) These punks that sit around and deploy viruses are the worst kind of scum there is. OK, maybe not, but they really piss me off!!
