  1. Is this by Tuli Kupferberg? (of the Fugs, for you young 'uns -- if I have to, I'll hunt up the thread explaining who the Fugs were, for you young 'uns...)
  2. Did you know your question would lead me HERE, Berigan?
  3. Hear Hear (here here, of course)! Watching Chico play the piano never ceases to fascinate me; even in the weaker pictures, his piano playing is always a highlight. Then Harpo comes along to steal the show with his angelic harp-playing. People aren't usually supposed to get choked up during comedies, but I do! I gave Chico his only vote so far, because of his piano playing (a piano professor back in my college days, Howard Karp, validated my closeted fascination with Chico's technique), and because of "there ain't no Sanity Clause" and "Abie the Fishman" -- speaking of which, Yup, I did!
  4. Dr. Fine Dr. Howard Dr. Fine
  5. I hear you! That's why sometimes I have to take a break from here, or my current job will become my old one!!! Great to have you back! Hope things have been good!
  6. No, thank you!!! I can't even remember the bad stuff I've eaten. Not specifically. Nothing as adventurous as any of the above -- not even lutefisk, and I grew up in northern Wisconsin!!! Like Noj, I know I've occasionally gotten hold of something spoiled -- but have spit it out right away (discreetly into a napkin if I'm with others) and gone off to rinse and spit. Live baby octopus??? No-o-o-o-o-o-o!!!!
  7. One individual I often think of is a sculptor named Michael Richards (no, not the actor who played Kramer) who had a fellowship for studio space at the top of one of the towers for five months. A work of his, Tar Baby versus St. Sebastian ("a life-size bronze cast of himself as a Tuskegee Airman, with his body being impaled by many small airplanes") is pictured HERE. THIS SITE has photos of another work, and an essay that expresses a lot of what I felt when I first saw these pieces: Heaviest of all is to look at photos from a 1996 show of his at theStudio Museum in Harlem.
  8. I remember on a long-ago thread guessing it was pretty much a wash between men's CD/car/hobby expenses and women's "appearance" (clothes/shoes/hair etc) budgets. But since I've been the sole breadwinner for many years (college-student son has had part-time jobs over the past 6 years)... well, I get this $100+ haircut once a year MAX, and do the interim upkeep trimming myself... works out better than "Supercuts" every 3 months...
  9. This is how they do it at the salon I go to. You guys have it so easy (except for J. Larsen)! I've followed one woman around to different salons for 12 years -- she's getting very high-priced but she's incredibly sweet and I totally trust her -- plus she gives me a "longtime client" discount -- but she's kind of stratospheric -- so even with the discount it's at least $100 (a woman would be paying Vidal Sassoon $250 or $300 EASY, these days). So I fold $20 into a little envelope for Lisa, plus $5 for whoever washed my hair, plus $1 for the coat check woman... If Lisa has someone else blow-dry, I give that person $5 and Lisa gets $15... This is a major reason I wear my hair long! Don't need to return too frequently!
  10. This was beautiful -- just like so many of the people in the film said when asked to describe the concert: "Beautiful!"
  11. That Zum Schneider is an excellent place...as you said, open to the outside and all...which, along with that row of nice blue Hofbrau table umbrellas outside, gives the place a real european feel. The manager is from Munich.....and the bartender from Dortmund...nice guys. And the beer is outstanding -- 10 brews and the taps were flowing like mad on a Sunday night. You KNOW it's a serious place when they DON't have the obligatory Becks on tap. A week ago??? I could have walked right by you, Weizen! Let's see, I went to the big march, then picked up groceries at Ave C & 8th about 5:00 PM, walked right past the tables "zum Schneider" and crossed C at 6th Street to get to my house!!!
  12. Clearly, from now on the Babe Thread can be defended as a public health service!!!
  13. The scientist in me says: maybe something in LATEX makes women depressed... Edit: I just realized the double-entendre but, at the moment, I'm the only scientist "in me"
  14. What's great is to hear a GROUP! Oh my god -- I heard Milton Cardona, Ray Barreto and Johnny Almendra play live with Tito Puente in a 1998 version of "Top Percussion"!!!!
  15. Did they play stuff from "In A Silent Way"? I was half asleep when I heard this on the radio. I know they played "In a Silent Way" at their Vanguard stand last winter (w/Billy Hart) and it will be on the new CD (w/ Jack deJohnette). Plenty of Jason Moran soloing at that Vanguard gig (maybe the radio guy was partial to Don's playing -- like I am -- and maybe even ubu on this occasion, since, as you said, "I quite liked his playing in this setting. Loose and swinging...")
  16. Or stop thinking that "NBA = USA" ??? 2004 non-USA NBA Olympians: ARGENTINA: Carlos Delfino, Detroit Pistons Emanuel Ginobili, San Antonio Spurs Andres Nocioni, Chicago Bulls CHINA: Yao Ming, Houston Rockets LITHUANIA: Darius Songaila, Sacramento Kings NEW ZEALAND: Sean Marks, San Antonio Spurs PUERTO RICO: Carlos Arroyo, Utah Jazz Peter John Ramos, Washington Wizards Daniel Santiago, Milwaukee Bucks SERBIA-MONTENEGRO: Peja Drobnjak, Charlotte Bobcats Nenad Krstic, New Jersey Nets Aleksandar Pavlovic, Cleveland Cavaliers Vladimir Radmanovic, Seattle Sonics SPAIN: Pau Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies
  17. Good one! But it does make me think, as Armstrong himself sang (in the words of Cole Porter): BIRDS do it!
  18. I know! Doesn't fit my picture! Guess I'll just have to readjust my view of what 71 is.
  19. Ditto. And throw in The Nation, too. I agree about preferring the New Yorker , as well as Harper's .
  20. She's getting married in October to a pitcher: Casey Daigle, sent to triple-A Tucson by the Arizona Diamondbacks this summer...
