  1. Two that I liked a lot but whose titles escape me (I'm too lazy to go downstairs to the "archives" to get the LPs) are by Marion Brown. If you liked his THREE FOR SHEPP on Impulse, you might look up these ESPs, assuming they're available on CD.
  2. Here's a couple of legitimate April Fools Day recordings: 1957, Art Pepper 4 with Carl Perkins, Ben Tucker & Chuck Flores - record 12 tunes for Aladdin, now released on THE ART OF PEPPER, Vol. 3 (Blue Note): 1982, Chet Baker & group which includes James Newton, Howard Johnson, Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden & Ben Riley records "Lament" (aka "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child"), "Four", "Line for Lyons", "Ellen David", "But Not for Me", "Prayer to the Newborn" - BUT NOT FOR ME (Stash cd).
  3. April 1st. Recorded on this date: 1936, Louis Armstrong performs with Django Reinhardt & the Hot Club of France in Paris, recording “Dinah”, “Nuages”, “Minor Swing” & “Basin Street Blues” (Odeon). 1946, Charlie Parker appears with Duke Ellington & his Orchestra in Los Angeles, soloing on “Jeep’s Blues”, “Raincheck”, “Caravan” and “Ko-ko” (20th Century CD). 1951, Thelonious Monk guests with Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh in a quintet performance at ‘Birdland’, NYC as Lennie Tristano is unable to appear that evening, performing “April in Paris”, “All the Things You Are”, “What is this Thing Called Love/Subconscious Lee” (Mercury). 1957, Sonny Rollins appears with the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop at the Café Bohemia, NYC (titles unknown, private recording). 1962, Eric Dolphy & Sam Rivers appear at a Synanon benefit performance at the Village Gate, NYC, in a group led by Elmo Hope (Warwick). 1965, John Coltrane appears with Sun Ra & his Arkestra in Philadelphia, performing 4 titles: “We Travel the Spaceways”, “Rocket #9”, “Interplanetary Low Ways” & “I Want to Talk About You” (Saturn). 1968, Dizzy Gillespie, Jackie McLean, Wayne Shorter head an all star sextet at the ‘Keystone Korner’, San Francisco (Contemporary). APRIL FOOL!!!! APRIL FOOL!!!! APRIL FOOL!!!! APRIL FOOL!!!!
  4. An old friend, Vladimir Simosko, wrote the liner notes to the Mosaic box of Serge's complete studio recordings and also wrote "Serge Chaloff: A Musical Biography and Discography" (Scarecrow Press). The Mosaic box contains most of the recordings thus far discussed in this thread but is long OOP. However, you might want to check out the book.....if you can find it.
  5. I have the book "The Man in the Green Shirt" and the title refers to the picture of Miles at the MILESTONES session:
  6. In that case, I'll be buried in a moving pod. More expensive (if allowed) I would think.
  7. I have the 5 Stars session with the same cover on LP. Recorded in Tokyo, July 29, 1979.
  8. Mea culpa. According to the Andrew Hill discography (click here) you are indeed correct. The note I attached to the LP copy I have owned for over 30 years also indicates a 3/21 recording date. I posted the wrong date of 3/31 as this is the date on the Blue Note CD copy I have.
  9. SPRING - "Love Song" alone is why I keep returning to this session. Great Sam, wonderful Herbie, and Tony is a 19 year old marvel throughout. Great record.
  10. March 31st. Recorded on this date: 1954, Charlie Parker 5 with Walter Bishop Jr. records (Verve): "I Get a Kick Out of You", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy", "I've Got You Under My Skin". 1956, George Russell "Smalltet" with Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Bill Evans, Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton & Joe Harris record (RCA Victor): "Ezz-thetic", "Jack's Blues", "Ye Hypocrite, Ye Beelzebub", "Livingstone I Presume". 1964, Andrew Hill 6 with Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Eric Dolphy, Richard Davis & Tony Williams - POINT OF DEPARTURE (Blue Note): 1990, Gary Bartz 5 with Claudio Roditi, John Hicks, Ray Drummond & Al Foster - WEST 42ND STREET (Candid). 1998, Myra Melford 5 with Dave Douglas, Chris Speed, Erik Friedlander & Michael Sarin - ABOVE BLUE (Arabesque):
  11. I have an original gatefold LP, the 1st CD issue, then the digipack. IMO, it epitomizes what jazz is all about - the improvisor supreme.
  12. It costs a lot more to fill a Honda Accord and I'm certainly not happy about it. How come we don't hear the SUV owners screaming?
  13. So THAT explains why I always thought that the Booker Little cover was mistitled! Thanks for clearing that up. I not only can turn to Newley, I can do so with Wilder as well.
  14. I have the above 4 issues and here is the information I was able to glean off the issues: 1) Hampton - "Jazz Flamenco" (RCA LPM-1422) - c1957 - By the way, I see no mention of Tete on this LP, rather the pianist listed is Oscar Dennard. 2) "Kirk in Copenhagen" (Mercury SR 20894) - absolutely no mention of date on the LP jacket nor on the record label. 3) "Body and Soul" (Black Lion BLCD 760212) - c1995 4) "Lunch in L.A." (Contemporary C-14004) - c1980 (Not sure if this is of interest but my LP copy of the George Coleman-Tete duet date is on Timeless Muse TI 312, c1979. Similarly my LP copy of the "Piano for Nuria" is on PAUSA PR 7057, c1980).
  15. Wonderful suggestion. I have all three and when I play Chet, these are the ones I go to. Excellent recordings that showcase him within a wonderful hard bop group that features some superb George Coleman.
  16. March 30th. Recorded on this date: 1945, Nat Cole with Bill Coleman, Buster Bailey, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Moore, John Kirby, Max Roach and vocalist Kay Starr* record for Capitol: "You Can Depend on Me", *"If I Could Be With You", *"Stormy Weather", "Riffamarole". 1997, Benny Golson group with John Swana, Ron Blake, Mike LeDonne, Peter Washington & Joe Farnsworth plus guests Tito Puente & 'Patato' Valdes - REMEMBERING CLIFFORD (thru 3/31, Milestone):
  17. I've always been quite partial to a set recorded at Carnegie Hall on Christmas Day 1949. Bird's quintet includes Red Rodney, Al Haig and Roy Haynes performing 5 tunes including an incendiary version of "Koko". Available on the now OOP cd, CHARLIE PARKER & THE STARS OF MODERN JAZZ, 1949 (Jass).
  18. I could have sworn she was on the same set with Getz in '64. Perhaps it was Monk. Regardless of the tricks my memory is playing on me, I did see her at Newport and it could have been in '63 as I went to the jazz festival there two years in a row back in my teenage days. Sleeping on the beach, catching various performances and workshops at other times,...... those were heady times and very responsible for a lifelong passion for this music, that's for sure!
  19. On track #11, once I had id'd Golson, I searched in vain for the recording on which this version of "Whisper Not" appears. And now I see why - it's from a broadcast. How long a broadcast is it and what else is on it? #12 - Wow, Bennie Maupin! Could not have guessed that ever. The only Maupin I have is from over 30 years ago with Lee Morgan live at the Lighthouse. Stretching out on a standard like "B&S" wasn't being done back then. Nice surprise, Ubu.
  20. March 29th. Also recorded on this date: 1975, Paul Desmond 4 with Ed Bickert, Don Thompson & Jerry Fuller perform at 'Bourbon Street Jazz Club', Toronto - LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE (Telarc):
  21. If you think I can remember from nearly 41 years ago, you're giving me way too much credit. I do recall however seeing her a few years later at the Westbury Music Fair (recorded by RCA Victor, don't know if it was ever re-issued on CD) in '68 the weekend following the assassination of Martin Luther King. It was very much a somber evening and she did an original song composed in his memory which was very good. Anyway, I can at least take out the LP and let you know what she performed that night if you're interested.
  22. March 28th. Recorded on this date: 1938, Duke Ellington small group with Cootie Williams, Lawrence Brown, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Billy Taylor & Sonny Greer record for Vocalion: "Jeep's Blues", "If You Were in My Dreams", "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart", "Rendezvous with Rhythm". (available on SMALL GROUPS, Vol. 2 - Columbia) 1940, Teddy Bunn (guitar & vocal) records a rare solo session for Blue Note: "King Porter Stomp", "Bachelor Blues", "Blues Without Words", "Guitar in High". (available on THE PORT OF HARLEM JAZZMEN - Blue Note) 1946, Charlie Parker group featuring Miles Davis, Lucky Thompson & Dodo Marmarosa record for Dial Records: "Moose the Mooche", "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "A Night in Tunisia". 1962, Frank Strozier 4 with Harold Mabern, Bill Lee & Al Dreares - MARCH OF THE SIAMESE CHILDREN (Jazzland) (available as 1/2 of cd LONG NIGHT - Milestone): 1965, Benefit held at 'The Village Gate', NYC, with groups led by John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Charles Tolliver & Grachan Moncur: THE NEW WAVE IN JAZZ (Impulse): 1992, Art Farmer Quintet featuring Clifford Jordan, with Geoff Keezer, Kenny Davis & Yoron Israel - LIVE AT SWEET BASIL (Evidence):
  23. DOIN' ALL RIGHT for sure. Great Dex & Freddie. Love the versions "For Regulars Only" and "I Was Doing All Right". Wonderful session.
  24. I saw Nina at the Newport Jazz Festival in '64. Couldn't wait for Getz to get off the stand so that she could get on. Shows how hip (???!) I was as a 19 year old budding jazz fan. But I console myself with what Bob Perry of Blue Note Records (the store) once said to me, "Hey, don't be too hard on yourself....you were there at least".
  25. A glass of Chianti and a side of fava beans.
