  1. Major loss. RIP.
  2. Condolences, but WOW.
  3. http://www.brooklynvegan.com/wfmus-performan/
  4. I don't know that it's wrong to say that physical punishment is viewed differently in different cultures. Also not the first time a great musician is also an asshole.
  5. This seems correct. Japanese culture has a somewhat different attitude towards punishment meted out by elders.
  6. Cool -- I assume this is Lars/Lasse Werner the pianist?
  7. I did. Interesting listen though probably not the kind of stuff I'd return to -- reminds me a bit of a mood-skewed Graettinger.
  8. Not ringing a bell; I think it was partial stage design w/ our people and probably part of it with Gaga's crew.
  9. Yeah, not at all. My artistic director collaborated with Lady Gaga so I did see LG perform and it was quite enjoyable -- Jeff Koons sculptures everywhere, goofy lights, loud sound system, choreography, crowds, video art. It wasn't in a huge venue but by no means would it have worked at The Stone!
  10. Any relation to the drummer Billy Elgart?
  11. Hey man, you can like what you like. I work for a celebrity theater director as his archivist and am not averse to spectacle. Sure, I vastly prefer the rawness of intimate performance but there's something intriguing about wild, complex stage design and choreography. It's another art and when done well, can be quite an experience.
  12. Oh right, Djibrill and Ostaine Blue Warner -- somehow forgot about those dudes. Archie Shepp & Philly Joe Jones is a completely different session from the Coral Rock/Black Gipsy/Pitchin' Can records. Coral Rock and "Uhuru" on Pitchin' Can: Archie Shepp (ts, p, chants) Lester Bowie (tp) Al Shorter (flh/tp) Clifford Thornton (v-tb) Bobby Few (p) Bob Reid (b) Muhammad Ali (d) Djibrill, Ostaine Blue Warner (perc.) Black Gipsy [sic] and "Pitchin' Can" title track Archie Shepp (ss) Noah Howard (as) Chicago Beau (voc) Julio Finn (hca) Clifford Thornton (ct) Leroy Jenkins (vln/vla) Dave Burrell (p) Earl Freeman (b) Sunny Murray (d) Archie Shepp & Philly Joe Jones Archie Shepp (ts, p) Philly Joe Jones (d) Anthony Braxton (as, ss) Leroy Jenkins (vln) Earl Freeman (b) Chicago Beau (voc, ss, p) Julio Finn (hca)
  13. yes, thankfully it's all still available on archive.org even if the original site is gone.
  14. They do play as listed. Chuck is correct.
  15. yeah, those Rod Levitt records are excellent. There's one album of 'pop' tunes that I don't have, but the rest are keepers for sure.
  16. Roscoe Mitchell -- Old/Quartet -- (Nessa)
  17. Totally. I've gotten that way with Brubeck. My dad was a huge fan at one point when I was a kid (his tastes have shifted somewhat) and it took years of other listening to come back to Brubeck's classic music with Desmond and company. Brilliant.
  18. My god, I never noticed the typo either -- and I should have!
  19. Gotta be that Little Richard LP. Look again.
  20. may not be right:
  21. I am guessing that the guy holding the record is also the guy on the album cover.
  22. Grant Hart, co-founder of the influential punk band Hüsker Dü, has died after a long battle with cancer at 56. Far too young. http://variety.com/2017/music/news/husker-du-grant-hart-dead-1202558122/
  23. wow. much harder to do in this country, but it's certainly his decision and I'd heard he was dealing with some serious problems. Glad you got to spend those formative years alongside him.
