A pianist I just discovered, Ryo Fukui - "Mellow Dream" is an amazing record, from '77. Haven't listened to much Friedman recently but used to go on jags of listening to him a lot and can attest to his brilliance. Also, can I change my title to "modal foo-foo" ?

Depending on the date and the definition of "Liberty-pressed" (it can mean a few different things to BN collectors), $25 could be about right for a NM- copy of a JOS record, much less one in VG shape.

Oh yeah, they are constantly hoovering up huge collections so yeah, visual assessment almost exclusively, or an occasional spot check. They used to cater more to beat diggers (who just wanted a clean-sounding break) and jazz heads. It also used to be harder to find stuff, at least with the online marketplace, so you weren't sure if you were going to see some private pressed Chicago jazz side again in the near future. Now, the market is wide open and even with rare titles, one usually encounters one or two a year.

Don't have those but if I did I'd just give them to you Will keep an eye out; NM- copies shouldn't be too hard to come by. I've seen the Weston numerous times.

Yeah, a click through one side would be a VG– at best so that is pushing it. Their NM- is generally okay but everyone makes mistakes. I almost never buy (knowingly) anything less than NM- condition from anyone. What were the titles? Maybe I have and can part with them.

Picked up Anderson's Jazzland LP on Kart's recommendation a while back - fascinating record. Second or third the emotions on Valdo Williams (a key influence on Jackie McLean) and of course Freddie Redd. François Tusques is another French pianist who's still very much active and doing beautiful work.

Joe McPhee - Solos: The Lost Tapes - (Roaratorio, US)

Ostensibly by Goldmine standards their VG is accurate, but if it was my money I'd wait around for a NM or VG++ copy. Unless we're talking flat edge Blue Notes or other 'collector' items, the price point variance is likely not wide enough not to spend an extra few bucks on something nice.

Going back to Parker/Drake for a moment, while Barnes and Brown are "good" I will say that my preference for that rhythm section is with a strong, interesting soloist like Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan or Peter Brötzmann. They'd probably sound interesting with Marco Eneidi too. I've never had volume two of New World Pygmies but I assume that they sound great with Jemeel Moondoc.

yeah, it was great to see Chuck and meet John Litweiler! I've heard Malaby play some excellent stuff and I've also heard him be utterly boring. I wanted to see Smith and Ortiz (don't see the trumpeter often) as well as the Leandre group (never caught her live). Of course I think Laubrock is excellent but I just couldn't imagine her music being suited to the venue, and at least for now she plays often enough in the city that I'm not worried about catching some variation of this group again. Oh well, better to stay in and rest anyway.

An uncomfortable or coerced 'yes' or a 'maybe' that is arrived at through similar means isn't a 'hell yes.' In a hookup, that's the only kind of 'yes' that should hold (not to mention the only one I would want to hear).

I'll add that every time I attend a performance situation like this, which leaves me unhappy, I feel a bit like it's my fault - I know in my heart that I love this music dearly, and there's no shortage of ringside cheerleaders, but the experience on the whole is just so flat. This is sometimes to the point of feeling like the kid in "The Emperor's New Clothes." Am I being a cynical dick or does some of this stuff just not hold up?

I got saddled with a horrible cold on Friday that kept me waylaid through most of the weekend. Rallied to catch the tail end of Sunday - the Hamiet Bluiett Orchestra - and I wasn't into it. The sound was terrible and I was far back in the room. Even if the piece was good - which it might've been - I couldn't tell.

Maybe you didn't catch my wording, but the point was is that we all know women who've experienced assault and it may even be someone we know closely. Not everyone feels comfortable sharing the details, so it's more rampant than you'd like to believe.

As a message board mostly made up of men, we likely won't ever understand what it means to be a woman in this society and the many ways in which rape culture plays out. I doubt that many of us have been assaulted, but I bet quite a few of the women we know have been. I'm sure Cosby's shit is familiar enough to our girlfriends, wives, and friends.
