  1. The quartet with Wooley, Niggenkemper and Corsano is off the hook! Also, Icepick is excellent - Wooley, Corsano and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on bass. Could add many historical recordings but it seems like the contemporary stuff gets short shrift. There's a wonderful new Portuguese label called Cipsela that has done some stuff with Carlos Zíngaro, Daniel Levin, Burton Greene and others, all in the 'chamber improv' realm.
  2. Roy Harper - Folkjokeopus - (Liberty/Sunset, UK)
  3. The Fugs - s/t (a.k.a. Fugs II) - (ESP, 5th Ave. pressing)
  4. Cool - will be dropping the needle on T.S. 1989 later this evening...
  5. To clarify, I've had Pathé and Nessa pressings as well, somewhat 'used' but not 'abused.' If I had cracked a sealed Nessa it probably would've been a different story! This was a new stock 70s Odeon copy and it sounds stunning. My copy of Stances is an early Nessa and it sounds great.
  6. Art Ensemble (of Chicago) - People in Sorrow - (Odeon, JP) have had multiple copies of this over about 20 years and this is by far the quietest pressing.
  7. I saw that Mars posted this on Instagram today. I wish I could attend.
  8. Lots of record stores in the city and outlying areas. I've heard that there are a lot of nice spots upstate and by the lakes, too (car-less, so haven't done a digging tour).
  9. He was playing with Sam Rivers at like 14.
  10. He was born in 1945 so he was probably 16 or 17.
  11. Will put my money where my mouth is this holiday season for sure. New banner looks rad too.
  12. I kind of liked the idea that Paul had his own thread! It's like being lucky enough to go through his amazing collection disc by disc.
  13. The UMS title was not really a reissue, since the music hadn't come out in any form previously. That Steinmetz record is really good.
  14. yep. I think that's still around. The quintet sides (TCJQ 1967) are nutso. That's a Danish jazz LP I'd like to own someday...
  15. Lennie Tristano - Descent into the Maelstrom - (East Wind, JP)
  16. Henry, Schaeffer, Arthuys - Panorama of Musique Concrète - (Ducretet-Thompson, UK orig)
  17. Have both of those LPs. Both are quite good. Action was reissued on CD by Steeplechase maybe 10+ years ago?
  18. Re: the Dixon material, that is correct - or at least the estate didn't see any royalties from the reissues.
  19. Yup. He also played the tenor, and quite decently.
  20. Four, plus the Dixon-Shepp Quartet and the split LP with Dixon's 7-tette and the NY Contemporary Five. Dixon had a contract with Savoy but for a variety of reasons felt it worthy to give the remaining albums he owed to Savoy to his students, and take on a role as a producer (and in at least one case, arranger). I forget the whole story, but he discusses it in Dixonia (and elsewhere).
  21. Thanks for bumping this thread. The Thomas-Pelzer Limited LP on Vogel has been hitting me just right lately. I have Guitar Groove on CD, but as with most of my CDs, it's boxed up and buried. Must try to sort out where it is in the near future.
  22. I really love the Marzette Watts LP on Savoy, but am doubtful that it would be up the alley of most people here. It's not a "perfect" record but it is, for me, an extremely enjoyable one. Bill Dixon plays piano on one cut, and they also do a version of the Dixon orchestral piece "Octobersong."
  23. Bassist Noah Young (née Richard Youngstein) is not on the Schrick list. He died on Nov. 9th at 71.
  24. LP in my experience is around $20. I've had it a few times.
