  1. Bernt Rosengren - Improvisationer - (SJR, Swe)
  2. Jimmy Woods - Conflict - (Vogue/Contemporary UK)
  3. Sounds like you're interested in semi-composed chamber jazz - kind of limited territory. I think that most jazz musicians who recorded with drummerless groups and most listeners to those groups (including myself) are are more interested in the improvising side of things. I guess you can throw out my recommendations. I didn't understand what you were looking for. I figured Iskra 1903 or a clutch of Company LPs wouldn't really fit in here...
  4. Maybe true - but I know for a fact my buddies' store in Austin, End of an Ear, sells so much that day that it really helps their yearly margin. Good for them.
  5. Really have enjoyed them live but couldn't hang with the record. I think it could have more punch. But that's just me and YMMV, etc. Jonathan Horne is their secret weapon.
  6. I had no idea Billy Crystal was part of the jazz world from a young age.
  7. I'm sure - this may just not have been the right avenue.
  8. Thanks for the review. I dug them the other night at Le Poisson Rouge, though Kurzmann didn't seem super-integrated into the proceedings and I think KV's white-boy funk sounds better with Kessler and Drake than Daisy (Tim's a tasty drummer but not adept at funk/breaks). Jasper Stadhouders is wonderful (Cactus Truck rules), but he shouldn't be asked to sight read knotty, atonal lines. He should have been hired to do what he does best, which is dig into that Rickenbacker like he is possessed by the spirit of Sirone, and when things opened up he was amazing. Those critiques aside I did enjoy the show. Haven't heard the records.
  9. In a similar vein, Zo-Ko-Ma: http://www.discogs.com/Attila-Zoller-Lee-Konitz-Albert-Mangelsdorff-Zo-Ko-Ma/release/1860151 Zo-Ko-Ma is a great record but there is the fact of Stu Martin's drumming that would probably keep it out of contention for the OP...
  10. Attila Zoller, Hans Koller, Martial Solal - Zo Ko So - (Saba, 1965). Beautiful guitar, tenor & piano trios.
  11. Wow, thanks for this. Though First Meditations for Quartet came out in 1977, so more like a dozen years after recording...
  12. That Morgue LP gets under my skin. Can't believe Evidence went for such serious coin the other day. It's a great date but used to be much more affordable. Guess it all was at one point...
  13. I haven't been able to go there with Lehman - I've tried - but the music could be worth revisiting. He's definitely up to something, even if it isn't my bag.
  14. Yeah, the Jay & Kai on Savoy. Wally Cirillo is on some of it too, I believe.
  15. Grex - Monster Music - (Brux) created and released by our own ep1str0phy !
  16. I too really like Slightly Latin. Have it on a mono Limelight LP. Actually have all of these in clean original-ish copies so I'll pass, but this looks like a nice set for anyone with the cash to splurge on it with.
  17. I used to have a very crackly copy of this, which is too bad because the Sonatas are beautiful. Would like to find a clean-sounding copy.
  18. Yeah, seems to be the store owner consensus. Plus, the whole "approval" thing is quite a load of bunk from what I understand. Stores seem to do more business than at any other time of year, which is kind of crazy and though a record-breaking weekend is great, wouldn't it be nice if people came back every payday to grab a few cool titles? The latter is what would keep stores in business.
  19. Barry Guy & Fred Van Hove - Assist - (Jazz & Now, JP)
  20. Leeway nailed it. This has been great. Just got back from acts one and two of Trillium J - it was a kick.
  21. Oh ok, cool - looks like I was reading too quickly. Will definitely upgrade! And I'm looking forward to hearing the Sullivan again - had it on LP (which I'd got sealed) but it had a defect that caused some serious jumps.
  22. Saft is cool. I ride for that Kalashnikov set (duos w/ Saft & Pride).
  23. Isn't he also on a Frederich Gulda session on MPS from around that time?
