  1. seller threw me back 75 so now I have to keep it. I can imagine how much better the real thing must sound. thanks for getting me through this tuff time. I'd be pumped on a $75 Liberty re-press. Glad the seller helped you out.
  2. Well, on Bagatellen and I Hate Music, the erstwhile label and other Rat-esque musics seem to be discussed regularly. I mean, a lot of lowercase improv and things like that really fall well outside the interests of most people on this board.
  3. Isn't that the joke inherent in the title? I suspect Axl's been goofin' this whole time.
  4. Yeah, I saw one on eBay once - went for about a hundred bucks. I think there are two different aggregations of Cox's band on there.
  5. I have that same problem and I don't know why. The Blue Notes are all swell and his stuff from the '70s is very courageous music. I have heard less (very little, in fact) of his recent work.
  6. And, as a modern art historian, I take issue with "throwing paint on canvas." It ain't that simple, folks...
  7. Yeah, that stunt-riding shit is just asking for it...
  8. I mean, I used to have friends who were bike messengers in Chicago and NYC. I mean, they'd weave thru city traffic at a good clip, but we're talking 20 mph in traffic that may be a little more "used" to it.
  9. But you think... how many people in, say, music school have good taste in musics of any other sort than the one they're ostensibly "studying?" This dude was doing "Imaginary Landscape" with his itunes and it was a mix of, you know, Carter, Varese, Haydn, Bjork, and Wilco samples. From a young composer at UT Austin. I mean... c'mon, you know - the UT music library is FULL of tons of neat shit and that's what he could come up with.
  10. No shit. I've always been partial to "Non-Alignment Pact."
  11. This friend of mine knew a guy in Chicago whose response to every "dick-size" record comment was this: "Yeah, but I've got a Coltrane album on his own label."
  12. Athearn is the way to go. I'm down to Atlas. Yes, the EMD demo SD-24 is really nice-looking. They do an excellent job. I haven't modeled trains since High School - used to be very into the Rock Island and Missouri Pacific.
  13. Anybody heard Joe Giardullo's Red Morocco (Rogue Art, 2007) ? One of only two large ensemble recordings by this very interesting saxophonist (he's got some great solo discs). Listening to it right now.
  14. I have his head in my freezer. There, I've said it and I don't care WHO knows! Well, you ARE a trombone player...
  15. Well, not to sound petty, but have you listened to any of the people he trumpets? I know Chuck and Larry are way keyed-in to the Chicago scene(s), and I've heard probably only a smidgen of recent vanguard music of that area comparatively. That said, I think they're quite right. As I and others have said, if you really like music, you'll wade into it deeply.
  16. I think you're taking Clem's posts a lot more personally than you need to. He does make one think. (edit: for Alexander)
  17. I mean, I'm just pointing out that if one digs, even in the crap-bin that is NPR, one can still find "decent" stuff. I mean, yeah, four bits on J Redman is not excused by a lil' bit on Dave Burrell, but I'm just sayin'... Didn't know that FD was her husband or that he wrote anything about the America catalog. My pick is the Emergency LP, but...
  18. Roswell Rudd Dave Burrell Iggy Redux Not my favorite band, but... Not Bad...
  19. Yeah, thas' where I'm at too. Shit.
  20. I know NOTHING about the kind of electronic beat music you listen to. But didn't Squarepusher use like Evan Parker on one of its discs?
  21. see --> HERE which drastically warps the retail, 'institutional' perception of shit v. shinola... not even techno Warp. Yeah, I mean that on uh, paper, looks shall we say, "thin." And I feel two sentiments here, myself: "so what, NPR is irrelevant" and "damn, the Houston jazz concert series will use this to base their programming for the next five years." I think Atavistic either did or will reissue the Big Black tape on DVD among a few others. I think I may have lucked out on seeing a few of these (SY, Flaming Lips) in my high school days, but Topeka was NOT Lawrence. "Long Stockings (for Barbara Ess)" - CT
