  1. ah, ok. Dan hasn't weighed in yet -- ha -- but can do before I hit the hay.
  2. Well, I was going to hold off until tomorrow but if you want me to go ahead, I can.
  3. I would agree. Never been steered wrong after buying or listening to something he's on.
  4. It's in the thread linked.
  5. I realized that I also did see the quintet after listening to the record. Crazy how memories work and get jogged.
  6. Thanks for working your way through it! I realize that I may have been overly generous with the length of this thing. I've had three copies of the LP on 11 and all of them play with inherent noise. Oh well!
  7. They're also playing Union Pool the night before, so NYC folks can get in on it. Thanks, all!
  8. Yeah, picked up Cliff Peterson's spare and the sound is a vast improvement on the digital files that were up on Bandcamp previously. Michael Gregory Jackson is a very interesting composer and this disc certainly fills some gaps. Really glad that it's been cleaned up and released.
  9. Glad to have seen Karl a bunch over the years until his unfortunate and quite sudden passing.
  10. It gives me the great honor and pleasure to announce the June installment of "So What Do You Think?" a little bit early. In conjunction with Valley of Search, who are issuing a 1977 archival LP featuring the trio of drummer William Hooker and saxophonists Alan Braufman and David S. Ware (1949-2012),Tubby's is hosting a revival concert celebrating this music with Hooker, Braufman, and tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis. It's a bit of a "pinch oneself" moment, and this concert promises to be a throughline of vitality between the loft era's churn and our contemporary landscape. The details: Tubby's Kingston, 26 June 2025 Doors 7 music at 8 (one set, and I'll probably DJ before/after) $20 presale here The LP is out now, so if you can't make the gig, please listen and purchase the record in whatever form you wish. It's a monumental piece of music! A great interview and overview of William and his work (published in 2018) can be read here. Alan and his music can be read about/listened to via this link. James Brandon Lewis -- who has played Tubby's a few times, including with The Messthetics -- has music and words here. Really looking forward to this one, and we hope to see you there!
  11. yeah, I've had the Japanese pressing of First Encounter for many years and it is indeed excellent. The Foster I'm unfamiliar with.
  12. Yes, Vanguard in the US. I have the CBS version, strong album... and as far as Watanabe goes, I can think of several very good LPs he released in the 60s and 70s. Those with Charlie Mariano are at the top of the heap but others aren't far off. That's right. Also, RVG remastered it for Milestone; I prefer the mix on the Victor original. It is a shame that no CD was produced with all available tracks in one package.
  13. Ordered this one straightaway. Toyozumi’s presence is rather special.
  14. The initial digital version sounded pretty lo-fi, as I recall. Has this been cleaned up?
  15. Yeah, the new one is nice indeed. He's from Seattle and relocated to NYC in 1974, seems like he was an East Coast working player until around 25 years ago (maybe less), when he returned to the Seattle area. Not a lot of sessions, but he's strong on everything I've heard.
  16. Yeah, Booker T. on Silkheart. He only has one album as a leader for the label. Thom ID’ed the artist & track/disc correctly so only 12 more remain!
  17. Glad you enjoyed! And bingo on Booker T. with Cyrille.
  18. Yes on Lewis/Lindberg and yes on KD and Tabackin! Good calls on both. Glad you dug it! nope, no WP anywhere on this comp @mjazzg
  19. Close -- another Japanese bamboo flute called the hochiku. Lindberg is correct! Bingo. I like the gradual emergence of tunes, always have, but I hear what you're saying in the context of BFTs. If you're not guessing in the first few minutes, you kinda just have to stick around whether you want to or not. my namesake is nowhere on the BFT but good guess.
  20. will buy the CDs-- the 4LP imo is too expensive though I'm sure it is a nice package.
  21. '71 is the intriguing factor for me. I'll probably pick it up once Dusty has it.
  22. All Americans on #4, and the names should be familiar once they're revealed! I really love the music and have enjoyed revisiting that album in preparation for the BFT. Hamid is not the drummer on #2, but I can hear the comparison. Both drummers emerged right around the same time in the second half of the 70s. #1 is, again, all-American, and yes, the pianist is the leader.
  23. Herbert Joos - (1940-2019) Mike Westbrook - 1936 Hank D'Amico - (1915-1965)
  24. Happy Birthday Amina Claudine Myers! And I should pick up that Cohn in some form -- don't have the Dawn stuff.
