True. My spreadsheet from the former editor and now NYT jazz obit writer of the NYC Jazz Record has him still living. I think it did come up in a conversation with a few old school Brooklyn jazz heads who believed he was still around but not musically active.

Thanks for bumping this -- I have the Japanese Victor LP which has a different running order than the original LP. I always assumed the alternate order had something to do with the tape transfer and side lengths, but it would be interesting if that was a revision specifically called for by the artist.

Both. Counterfeits have been a thing for decades, although they're easier to document now. Alterations have also been made to later reissues and sometimes these are passed off as originals to undiscerning buyers. And I'm positive some fake hand-colored/hand-painted Sun Ras have been going around... in other words, stock older Ra LPs decorated recently by record sellers.

I am told that the Japanese saxophonist and bandleader has died at age 90 (3 Oct 1925 – 18 Jan 2024). The Soul Media LPs that HMV reissued over the last several years range from very enjoyable to positively excellent. RIP

I'm hearing unfortunate reports from his collaborators that the saxophonist Wally Shoup has died. He has been a mainstay of the Seattle area improvised music community since the 1980s. Shoup was in Birmingham before that, playing and recording with La Donna Smith and Davey Williams, and I believe former board member Jeff Crompton knew him from a stint in Atlanta. I never saw Shoup play but always found his music on disc fascinating. RIP.

Never really gave much thought to Peterson beyond what to me felt like an entirely mechanical approach to playing. Daniel A mentioned upthread the fact that he was releasing albums on MPS and honestly, that fact probably kept their rich and weird catalog funded... An ex-girlfriend of mine's father was very into OP, dazzled by him, and was also a huge fan of later Return To Forever. I think it was the technical aspects of the playing that he was into, more than anything else.

Great, great record. He was totally serious, but in this music, certainly falls within the range of "outsider artists." Glad he was here to do what he did.
