  1. To continue the derailment, I had that 10" posthumous release on T&G, and thought it was pretty good. No singing, and singing now bothers me way more than it did then - at least on those kinds of records. Stranger things have happened than a 10" on Jennifer Hartman, but I've never seen it - that's all I'm saying. My last copy of Tweez was a T&G repress, and I wasn't feeling it anymore... Then again, I always get reamed for liking Rodan, and I really do like Rodan a lot. Still.
  2. Giorgio Gaslini - Nuovi Sentimenti - (EMI reissue of VDP orig) with Lacy, Cherry, Rava, Gato, Romano, Jenny-Clarke, Kent Carter, Franco Tonani and Gianni Bedori. Hard to fuck with that lineup... Now: Steve Lacy Sextet - Scraps - (Saravah orig, autographed!) "Ladies" is insane (and aren't they?!)...
  3. Only saw Spider John once when I was up there, as part of some anti-whatever (meta-hipster) festival. Good shit indeed, though it was kind of a blur. If I were still in MSP, I'd be there!
  4. Is that right? I was under the impression that Mazurek was the one who was commissioned for this piece. McEntire does play on this album, but Vandermark doesn't, does he? No, Vandermark doesn't play on it. I was referring to an earlier post. J, I was quoting you to concur... And btw, the earliest version of Tweez that I had was the 12" on Jennifer Hartman. Didn't realize there was anything before that.
  5. Eric Dolphy - Iron Man - (Douglas original) Been awhile since I spun this'n!
  6. That Exploding Star Orchestra is the cross-pollination of McEntire and Vandermark sensibilities, from what I understand. Be afraid - be very afraid!
  7. What do you have already, and which is the best? This one is well documented. But it is only available in French! The cover (by Chenz) shows Jackie McLean at the Chat Qui Peche in 1961 with Jean-François Jenny Clark on bass and Aldo Romano on drums. Big Beat Steve already mentioned this one. It is a good read! I wish it was in English, or more correctly, that I read French! Not only is Jackie hot, but that's a sweet rhythm section. They must have been so young then! Le Chat Qui Peche is where so much happened - it would've been a great time to be in Paris!
  8. He was contracted to play it by some clubs. There's a story that Burton Greene tells in his autobiography about Trane playing a gig where Frank Wright was in the audience. The group stopped their set, and the clubowner got pissed and refused to pay because Trane was contracted to play the tune. So he brings the band back on stage, they play the theme, and Trane says "Frank Wright, sit in!" Frank blows furiously for several minutes, then Trane plays the theme, and they collect their dough. Burton could tell the story better, but it's funny/strange either way...
  9. Bastro are fine, but if you ever have heard Rhys Chatham's tune "Drastic Classicism," ya got all ya need right there - and without any hammer-hurling... Apparently there was an all-girl punk band in the '90s from Louisville called Rastro, which I find quite funny. Fuck Tortoise, the Sea and Cake, hell, fuck Slint too (overrated). CA bitch magnet
  10. Yeah, it was my tipoff to what yesterday actually was...
  11. Mal Waldron - The Whirling Dervish - (America) Mal Waldron - Blood and Guts - (Futura) Warne Marsh - s/t - (Atlantic black label orig) A good morning soundtrack to writing a research paper...
  12. Actually, come to think of it, DMG has some of the craziest prices I've ever seen in a store on used records.
  13. I've never had any problems per se with Manny, Bruce, or DMG. For CD's, they've got a pretty strong stock. Bruce did rag on Teddy Charles' Evolution once, though...
  14. No problem, Brownie. It is a gatefold sleeve and I believe it is the same as the original apart from the spine that is white and not orange and black. Also, the back of the sleeve is blue. (I don't know what colour the original one is). BTW, it is the live at the Village Vanguard live AGAIN! Sorry about the confusion! Yeah, the back of the original is glossy blue... the white spine is a drag, but it could be worse! I've seen those Capitol Record Club issues also - never bought them myself because of the reasons you're not keeping it, but if you're not anal-retentive, it's not a bad deal... FWIW, I'm not convinced that the recording quality itself is all that great. My red/black Van Gelder always sounded pretty thin to me.
  15. You know, I totally forgot that today was April Fool's day.
  16. I would doubt the tape, whether polyester or acetate, would have held up well enough in less-than-archival conditions to sound even halfway decent at this point.
  17. No comparison between SST and Adelphi...
  18. I think Manny is a bit stockier than the pics I've seen of Clem, though!
  19. That's been talked about before at length - something to do with protecting identities from off-eBay sellers, but really it just encourages shilling. Hell, I might sell my copy of that Frank Wright to "Bidder 4" for $600!
  20. Magnetic - thanks. Yes, I'd certainly like to get those... and hear the group with Brian Trentham as well! Supposedly that Zounds LP with Lasha and Simmons is going to be reissued on CD. Lasha did mention something about getting it out again, anyway. He does own the music.
  21. Glad they got it on tape! Wack ass shit.
  22. Per Henrik Wallin Trio - s/t - (Caprice) featuring Erik Dahlback (d) and Torbjorn Hultcrantz (b), a very fine breakneck runthrough of the piano-trio tradition (at least from bop to free) done by three of Sweden's finest improvisers (Wallin's RIP).
  23. Never really "dug" the place, though I did see a few good gigs there when in NYC. Still, one less venue is one less venue...
  24. Mats Gustafsson - Presents the Music of Norman Howard - (Anagram) This really is becoming a favorite of mine. Absolutely beautiful. Usual suspects Vandermark, Bishop, Haker-Flaten, Nilssen-Love and vibist Kjell Nordeson present stunning renditions of the unsung trumpeter's compositions.
