  1. I listened to Cecil do "Bemsha Swing" right after re-reading this thread last night...
  2. didn't Ornette Coleman have one of his first professional jobs with Crayton? Yep. I've never heard Crayton's music, either.
  3. A great record, but I thought it had come down in price! Or maybe it has... JR on Jaro
  4. Tyner does sound a little distant, iirc, but it's one HELL of a record. Jeezus.
  5. Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky - Just For Fun (FMP original) with some indescribably shrill alto soloing, plus Conny Bauer, Klaus Koch and Wolf Winkler in superb form. One of the great FMP sides and a strong slice of East Berlin madness.
  6. Which Bennink? Too lazy to look it up myself... Peter Bennink was also with Globe Unity, the infamous ICP "Chocolate Box," Groupcomposing and on Breuker's The Message (ICP). I'm sure there are many others also.
  7. Who wants to do an AOTW of it? I don't have the extra tracks, as I only have it on LP. For me, it hasn't had the impact that other sides from the period with similar personnel have had, but that's my personal feeling. It does get a lot of "talk," probably much of that having to do with the fact that it went so long without being reissued. I know it's not that similar to records like Nipples, Karyobin and Ichnos, but I've gotten much more mileage out of those...
  8. Gil Evans - Into the Hot (Impulse mono original) always wondered why they had to split up the programs so...
  9. I can deal with an orange in my Leffe but today the lemon in the Hoegaarden brought in the fruit flies... a fourth of the beer left and I had to pitch it!
  10. Yeah, my dad went through that Bob James-Earl Klugh period, and still Cassandra Wilson and Diana Krall creep in every now and then, but I think we're neck-and-neck in the Jackie Mc department. The classic piano trio is his preferred format (he's a pianist, though shoulder problems have curtailed his playing), but over the past several years he's become more and more into hardbop, which I think is great.
  11. Yeah, that's the more common variant. Spineless, indeed... Never got too into those International Polydor variants either (diff. jackets), but what can you do?
  12. I wouldn't have known the true meaning of caps lock and Hank Mobley, or bird flu's impact on each... Also wouldn't have gotten to know and love a bunch of you guys (and gals)... Also wouldn't be seeking a near-mint black label stereo of Jimmy Woods's Conflict (goodbye wallet!).
  13. Now, side two of Albert Ayler - In Greenwich Village (Impulse, red-black stereo) always thought the better music was on the Village Concerts posthumous twofer, but this disc is no slouch...
  14. Kora - that works for me. Balafons are great instruments, but there surely isn't one on that record. I'm pretty sure it's harmonium, though the pitch is a little high. Definitely not anything from the basses, as they're vamping away underneath.
  15. I dunno, maybe it's just that Evan Parker's sort of a dick?
  16. Yeah, both Benninks on clarinets (and bagpipes)... need I mention the Brotzmann-Hazevoet-Bennink-Bennink shrill onslaught at the beginning?
  17. Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity - (Impulse white-label) strange they didn't list all the various ethnic instruments that the group plays; I'm hearing koto and harmonium, but they're not listed anywhere on the LP.
  18. Yeah, those original NYCF Sonets are really stinkin' rare... I've only seen one copy, of Volume 2.
  19. Hey, thanks! You're right, I did some research on the Vanguard and it is a bootleg. Despite the somewhat dubioius quality vinyl pressing I have (I thought Germans were hip about this...), I can burn it for you (or anyone else) for free. No artwork, though, as I'm without a scanner. I've got Unlawful Noise on LP and haven't listened to it in some time, though I have enjoyed it. Spent a bit more time with Pleasure One (Peace Records, also on UMS), which casts a Dutch glance at wide-vibrato funeral music. It's got Moholo, Kris Wanders (alto) and Gorter in the mix...
  20. Awesome photos. Thanks!
  21. Probably eBay or maybe some Japanese CD distributors. I assume it's oop, but I've seen it around a bunch. I didn't realize the Village Vanguard was on CD as well - did you buy it? It's absolutely great! "Back-A-Town Blues" is one of my favorite Howard tunes.
  22. That is a great - and rare - LP. My uncle's on that one! Phil Buettner, looks just like me...
  23. Nope - NY USA/43W61st ! And an inner sleeve saying "27 years of Blue Note"? MG I love going to a certain Boston record store just to hear owners make fun of vinyl snobs like this. They put me in stiches! Music lover forever. It's all in good fun, mate, even from the "snob" end!
  24. "Henry" Miller's Isipingo would be a gritty recording, indeed!
  25. I've only been told through the small Austin jazz grapevine, but apparently Revenant and Ornette are closer to working out the nitty-gritty than they had been in the past, and that work has actually begun on compiling such a box. But yes, let's wait and see before our undies get in a bunch!
