  1. The label always seemed sorta overrated to me too, though the Dolphy Series material is quite "nice."
  2. Waldron used that piano to his advantage - I think that piano is the best thing about the gig!
  3. As for Kenyatta, I've always dug his Free State Band LP on America, which was reissued by Musidisc (not part of the recent "Free America" series). Others of his discography haven't held up as well as that one, though his tone and phrasing - especially in the '60s - really hit hard. Great player (God rest his soul) and too underrated!
  4. That one certainly does - I have the mono as well, and it's so full and gorgeous. Everybody is on top form there, and that tune "Latona" is stellar!
  5. I'm only tangentially familiar with Tapscott as well, though I really like the Dark Tree and Live at IUCC. Haven't investigated the solo stuff, though it's not a medium I find myself in that often. I would really like to get the Flying Dutchman LP, but it's pretty tough to find. Already have the Bradford/Carter, otherwise that West Coast Hot might be worth picking up to kill two birds with one stone...
  6. Iridium, right, not the BN as I'd previously posted. Yeah, it was heavy to see "Love and Hate" performed live by that band. Great gigs and the band all seemed like wonderful folks. I really liked being in NY that week and now more than ever am I thankful for it.
  7. It's not bad. Also, I think the "misplaced" modifier works fine. It's not creating peril for the sentence or the idea.
  8. I like(d) the radio show, and I think she's done a lot for the music. I wouldn't exactly put her in the same category as Brubeck or anybody else of "legendary" status, either. But she's cool.
  9. System Tandem + Tony Scott... bet that's a good record.
  10. Peter Broetzmann - Machine Gun - (FMP pressing)
  11. Then I beat you... they had an avant garde 50% off sale at the shop I bought the discs, and I paid around 30$ for all four of them! Full prize for the Malinga would have been around 17-18$. I've seen it go for $80 on eBay more than once, so we both beat out somebody!
  12. Yeah, I'd never heard anything about him either way, other than that he was from SA and lived in Switzerland in the '70s and '80s. I have the LP and like it very much, so I'd recommend the disc to anybody into SA jazz. I think I paid about $16 for the vinyl!
  13. I would never have expected the Malinga to be on CD...
  14. Manfred Schoof - The Early Quintet - (FMP) 80s issue of '66-'67 tapes with Dudek, Schlippenbach, Buschi, Liebezeit and on one track, Sven-Ake Johansson. Excellent material, for sure...
  15. I don't know much about it either, other than it's CT's last official recording AFAIK. It's a great record, though, and quite hard to find.
  16. Shandars... Is that the Fondation Maeght material? I've listened to a handful of the shows from that European tour with Rivers and really enjoyed them. It'd be nice to see some of that released on (legit) CD. Yes, that's it. Agreed that they should be properly issued - though CT didn't get paid for the originals either! There's a heavy gig of that band in Rotterdam at De Doelen from the same period; Rivers is yelling his lungs out, and it's pretty intense!
  17. At least!
  18. Most of my McLean is still in boxes. However, oddly Jackie's Bag (Liberty stereo) was mixed in with some stuff I brought up to Austin and was able to spin that one yesterday night. "Appointment in Ghana" is an amazing tune, and very forward-looking to his later '60s work. Considering the rest of the band (Miss Brooks, Kenny Drew, Blue Mitchell, A.T. and P.C.) and some of the contemporaneous gigs they were on, this is music that is light-years ahead.
  19. I've never heard this either, but I guess it explains the 1946 year of birth that most jazz references give for Rene. Jackie would have been 14 or 15 (depending in which year of birth you believe for Jackie) when Rene was born. Not impossible, but unlikely. That does make sense. I didn't realize Rene was that old and consequently had to do a double-take... I mean some people start early, but sheesh!
  20. Great observation, and I totally agree. He would get ahead of himself, his ideas came so fast that the physicality almost had to have some time to catch up. Dolphy is/was like that as well.
  21. Well, that record does contain the tune "Poor Eric," which is a weighty and somewhat depressing tune - probably appropriate considering our earthly loss... I had the pleasure of seeing him, Grachan, Bobby and Rene in Summer 2004 at the Blue Note. It was a great gig and a very kind crew. Glad I got the chance.
  22. I feel a chunk missing from my soul here. This is the first time anybody I've interviewed has passed. He was very kind and generous, and really easy to talk to - even though I was very nervous! I have never got enough of his music, his tone, the sheer energy and power and honesty of his playing. The phrase "keening alto" really applies to him, and he always stretched out his bands as far as they could go. Thank you for the beautiful music and the memories of conversation, Jackie. I'll miss you very much.
  23. I've never bought any of the Impulse sides, but have been curious about them. There's probably a thread somewhere around here that would be helpful... Edit: Yeah, I know these are earlier than the thread-starter, but whatever.
  24. Yeah, but Jackie wasn't at all defensive on similar questions... super nice guy. But your point is well taken! Rarely do I ask questions like that.
