  1. He's also on 'The Grand Wazoo' he was on the Tonight Show band. He was in the GRP big band (I think he did a solo album on GRP) Excellent trumpet player. bigtiny
  2. 'See the Light' - I'm surprised nobody cited this one yet -- 7/4 with an Oscar Brashear trumpet solo....into great EWandF signature sound... 'Yearnin' and Learnin' 'Reasons' 'After the Love is Gone' bigtiny
  3. I just saw this in a store and was wondering if the tracks on it appeared in the Art Ensemble box set, or if this material is previous to that. Anybody know? Chuck? bigtiny

The 50s and 60s are good, as are the 70s muses. The 80s records always tended to sound flat and lifeless to me, though the playing is great. bigtiny
  5. - Joe's cause of death was cancer - Along with 'Light as a Feather' he plays his ass off on 'Friends' - a bunch of his stuff is available on Emusic bigtiny

    Ralph Towner

I really like 'Old Friends, New Friends' bigtiny
  7. Bob doesn't so much as hum along, a la Bud or Keith Jarrett as he just full out sings along with his playing! bigtiny

See my comments in post 17. edit: listen to Fascinoma if you're confused, that's just his acoustic horn. dB Hmmm.....not sure why you're quoting me here. I was responding to another poster who had commented that there was trumpet on the last three tracks. I was simply pointing out that there is trumpet on all of the tracks. I think the quoting system confused things. Anyway, just wanted to try to straighten out the communication here. bigtiny

Strongly disagree here. Just listened to it the other day and it fits quite well within the whole Hassell ouvre. You also forgot to mention 'Dressing for Pleasure' which I consider to be even funkier than 'Citi: Works of Fiction'. bigtiny I didn't forget anything, I didn't recommend it. Mea Culpa...... bigtiny

There's trumpet on ALL tracks. Hassell has a unique way of playing and processes his trumpet electronically. It's nothing like Soft Machine or Hugh Hopper.... bigtiny
  11. I don't know if there are many around, but her piece 'Oh Moscow', which I'm pretty sure was out on record, is pretty good. I saw the show live and it cooked. I haven't heard anything about Lindsey for a few years. Last word was that she had MS. Anybody have any recent status? bigtiny
  12. That's not Jaco. While this guy resembles him a bit, Jaco's facial features were more severe, more angular. bigtiny

    John Carter

Just found a copy of Bobby Bradford with SME volume 2 (thanks Chuck!). Excellent record....now if I can find volume 1! bigtiny

It is Echoes. Hearts of Space is all Stephen Hill. I have had some interesting conversations with John Diliberto and his wife [they both put Echoes together]. Diliberto was into prog pretty heavy back in the day. He dissed me and my colleague for not having any Magma records. Udu Wudu!!!! =:-) Got to love the Magma folks! Vander and Bernard Pagnotti! Whew...... bigtiny

    David Izenzon

Saw this a few years ago (on video tape). That's wild when they are doing the film soundtrack and they do this great improvisation to one of the film segments and the engineer doesn't record. I thought Moffett was going to go into the control room and kill him. =:-) You know, you hear about some of these guys being 'real assholes' and stuff, but when you see some of these documentaries, you start to get a more complete picture. Traveling around, no sleep, bad food, little money, then you have to go do some sessions or something and 'be creative' and you do it, just to have some other idiot not do his job....GEEZ! bigtiny
  18. In all of the post-RIP postings I became aware that Freddie's 'Superblue' was put out on CD by Mosaic Contemporary (or whatever it's called) and I just received it yesterday. Listening as we speak. I hope they do some more Freddie. bigtiny
  19. Never listened to Carter much. MAN!!!! I was totally unprepared for what I heard... Carter is one serious MOFO...he played bari, tenor, soprano, and flute. He played hi, low, fast, slow, out, in, modern, traditionally, solo, and with the band. He was a crowd pleaser...just a monster. If you haven't heard this guy...I'm serious, see him. His band is great -- keys and drums and the players are excellent. The trio is very simpatico. Great set of music. Highly recommended. bigtiny

The Ornette "Live at the Golden Circle" albums are sublime. Izenson (and Moffett) really kick ass..... bigtiny
  21. Agreed - I'd forgotten about that record until the Randy Brecker piece reminded me. Played it last night and Freddie is scary! You've got THAT right....I just listened to it last night for the first time this year. Geez...I'd forgotten how nasty this is. I wonder if they recorded the second set??? bigtiny
  22. Actually, this is a pretty good album....its just the damned overused reverb that makes it difficult to listen to....the playing is excellent though.... bigtiny
  23. There was a resurgence of recording activity in the 80s on the Contemporary label and Freddie was part of several of the sessions. I remember that one was a Joe Farrell record (can't remember what it was called) that Freddie just plays his ass off on. There's a story in the liner notes that he had just come from having a root canal done to the session!!!! I'd also like to mention that there were some mid 70s Milestone releases that Freddie is on that are pretty good: McCoy Tyner - 4x4 (one side) McCoy Tyner - Together I quite enjoy these albums, and Freddie's contributions to them... bigtiny
  24. Another great CTI with Freddie is Milt Jacksons 'Sunflower' which features 'little sunflower' and some other tunes. Freddie plays well as does hancock and everyone else involved. bigtiny
  25. "IIIIIIIIIIEEEEEE Come from NOWHERE.....YOU SHOULD GO THERE....." ha ha ha.....great guitar riff on this too.... bigtiny
