  1. Whoa---the goldwave instructions for downloading seem to be for windows alone. Is there a comparable way to download music for Mac?
  2. And Slide---that's one terrific avatar you have there.
  3. Thank you for the heads up about Tea. He belongs on Mt. Rushmore.
  4. At itunes you can download Peggy's "Whisper Not" for 99 cents. (If anybody can tell me who is the guy that plays that fine trumpet solo, I'll award him or her a brass figalagee.
  5. WATCH OUT, GUYS. I just received an email purportedly from Paypal, with their logo and everything. They say I have to update my account and want my password and all, and they want it by the end of this month or they'll cancel my account. I got suspicious and called the real Paypal and they said indeed that it was a scam. So if you've gotten one of these, and particularly if you've given these buggers any information, check your account and FAST.
  6. Why do you guys single them out? Yeah, I buy from them, but also from Mosaic, Daedalus, and that other bunch -----GEMM--. Not to mention eBay, World ------yes, I buy from all of them. I can never move from this house. Why did I buy this computer? And meet you guys?
  7. I have a PeeWee question. But first let me mention that your opinion of his ability was, in his day, questioned by many. But unique he was, and admired by many then and many now. As far as I know, he has only one clarinet disciple--Kenny Davern, whose playing has been influenced by Pee Wee,but is unique and superb in his own way. Davern is one of those guys who can be identified immediately, even in a group. One early fan was Bud Freeman, who predicted that Pee Wees talent would be recognized more and more as time went on. But I digress. Back to the question--Late in his life, PeeWee played with , and recorded with a very fine trombonist named Marshall Brown ( I think ihave the name right) Do any of you know what sides they made, and for what label? And what happened to Brown. Died young, I think, but I don't know for sure. Anybody???
  8. In recent months there have been a large number of Concord jazz albums showing on on Daedalus. I guess I'll go back and take a second look. They go for 5.98 which is a pretty good deal if you can find anything you want.
  9. When ttelevision first started, Fred Allen observed that people of the future would have eyeballs the size of grapefruit, and no brains at all.
  10. "Whisper Not" Peggy Lee. Just got it from iTunes. For 99 cent you can get it stuck in your brain too.
  11. I heard this story recounted by a paleontologist/biologist who had brought his class on a field trip to dig around for artifacts. He is one of the guys who had been brought in to study the "human" track left in a stream bed claimed by creationists to prove that man and dinosaurs lived at the same time, thereby upsetting the long time span required for evolution etc. The result of the study was that the supposed footprints had really been left by a two legged running dinosaur thereby leaving dinosaur heel prints which were interpreted by the conservative gang as human. He realized at the end of the field trip that they were in close proximity to the footprints so he suggested that the class head over that way and take a look. He said that when they got there that the footprints in question had, during the intervening period, grown toes.
  12. I just figured I'd reply to a couple of comments here and there in this thread about the relative sound quality of 78's,lps and cds. I survived both changeover revolutions and IMHO lp's were a vast improvement over 78's. However, I remember and still have some of the first lps which had a heck of a lot more music on them than later, after the record companies woke up. I was never that impressed with the sound quality of cd's vs lp, but that may just be personal taste. However, there is one hi fi value that cd's could have, and maybe sometimes do have: dynamic range. I heard an early cd with Bubecks group when Morello dropped a rim shot that used every bit of dynamic range I figure was possible. I had the lp and theres not a doubt of the early use of dynamics then. Were the same dynamics applied to an lp, the needle would be blasted out of the groove. Maybe they are still using the same dynamic level in classical cd's but I don't hear it that much in jazz. Don't tell me theres dynamics in rock, it all sounds high volume. But Idon't want to argue about it. de gustibus etc/
  13. I'm delighted to find a coven of Sinatra fans here, because I have a question for you. A couple of years ago I heard a recording of a Sinatra rehearsal of "East of the Sun" with a big band. It must have been fairly early in his career because he was really belting it out in a way he toned down later. After they finished the number, Sinatra called for a repeat I guess because he was so hyped up. Even though I have mostly liked Sinatra's stuff, this recording was just out and out memorably superb. Anybody any idea??
  14. re Denon----I have nothing to say about it except that I spent the entire day crawling around connecting my newly purchased Denon CDR-W1500 into my audio rig. Right now, I'm so pooped with the effort that i haven't played it yet. Not Denon's fault, it's the complexity of my complicated wiring system that did it.I also cursed out the guy who wired it, but it does no good because the guy is me. This unit comes highly recommended, which is why I bought it. I'll post here again tomorrow with the results and how I feel about them.
  15. CHRISTIERN-- Sorry to go off topic like this but I asked you re a post on another topic what Jazz Corner had done to end up on your shit list?????If you replied, I missed it.

  18. Brian Ogilvie, tenor and other reeds. RIP
  19. Alan--Do you perhaps have any idea what became of him? He disappeared abruptly from the scene.
  20. I'll reiterate----haven't any of you guys heard of Johnny Bothwell. Poor talented guy.
  21. Johnny Bothwell was a very close disciple of Hodges way back when. I don't have any idea what happened to him. Anybody???

    Jack Teagarden

I was passing by and read the contributions by others. They are absolutely right in their advice. His work with Condon was terrific and I agree wholeheartedly. I was also reminded of the work he did with Pops, particularly with the group Pops had with Jack,Barney Bigard.Earl Hines and I believe Zutty. Aw hell, I'll listen to anything by him.
