  1. I'll be in NYC from June 22nd - 26th for a short foray and wondered if anyone on the Board had specific recommendations on gigs to check out? I'm aware of the stuff on at the JVC Festival but would be specifically interested in any good hard bop/post bop/big bands to check out. Either Manhattan or Brooklyn would be ideal. Also - any good Jazz vinyl emporias that I should check out? Thanks in advance !
  2. Probably. He sounds well out of it on some of the tracks but strangely the playing is very appealing. Reminds me quite a bit of Tony Coe at times. Style-wise its a fairly typical Brit modern/mainstream date of the late-60s. I find Kenny Wheeler's playing on the session up to his usual fine standard and of course there's Stan Tracey on drums, making an excursion from the 'black hole' of Scotts (where he was house pianist at the time and dealing with his own demons) and adding his usual witty backing. Anyone notice that 'Benny Goodman' is on drums?
  3. I can vouch that this new 'Hummingbird' reissue sounds great - one of a very fine initial batch of Derams from Dutton Vocalion, all very scarce on original vinyl. You could do worse than buy the whole batch of them (minus the Terry Durham).
  4. Some of these Fontanas were reissued in Japan on Trio Records.
  5. Yes, I must admit that the impression I picked up just listening to Episode 1 was that Orrin was the one 'calling the shots' (for example with him listening to the Bill Evans tape on the phone call with Mundell Lowe), with Bill Grauer just getting a few mentions.
  6. Arthur Godfrey Tiny Tim Don Ho ← 'The Don' Richie Benaud Geoffrey Boycott
  7. Yes, this is a good idea. As long as there are no more than 2 or 3 BFTs in 'active posting' mode at any one time (as distinct from 'late additions'), I think this is quite workable.
  8. Just a mention also that there is a great DVD in the 'Jazz Casual' series with Thad & Mel from 1968. This has some of the tunes on the Mosaic: Tracks are: 'Just Blues' 'St Louis Blues' 'Kids Are Pretty People' The disk also has a broadcast of the Woody Herman 1960s Herd on it. Unmissable..
  9. DrJ - they are around.. Good luck in getting hold of it, I just VPI'd the LPs the other day and they sound great. I too got hold of the CD set first (which I still own and play, just love this set) but it was nice to get the vinyl. You shouldn't have to pay any more than $300-400 for sure.
  10. He certainly has some nice recollections of Wes Montgomery on programme 2, with the story of the Adderley's phoning him up with the hot news from Minneapolis. Interesting comments on the junkie habits of Chet Baker and Bill Evans too.
  11. Francy Boland 'Going Classic', Vogue 2LP set
  12. Yes, it's removed on the Mosaic. Seeing this thread made me dig out the Mosaic LP set this afternoon and I can vouch that the sound on these Q-LPs is pretty damn good. No noticeable reverb. I agree with your verdict on this set - I'd probably put it in my top 5 too and I would also agree that the first few LPs hit the peak. Precision, incredible swing and enthusiastic playing sum it up for me.
  13. I have a couple of rare-ish British jazz albums on the way. A pristine copy of the original 'Under Milk Wood Suite' by Stan Tracey on UK Columbia and a nice mono copy of 'Presenting the Harry South Big Band' on UK Mercury.
  14. No Scirocco Jazz or Jazzprint or BGO or Lonehill Jazz ( )
  15. Well....... the reverb certainly isn't there on my single CD of 'Consummation'. I don't have the rest in single CD format so can't comment for sure but would be amazed if the reverb was left in.
  16. 'Complete Solid State Thad Jones/Mel Lewis' Mosaic set, LP 1
  17. Hank would be proud of him..
  18. From the back of the Mosaic booklet, from what I can see the following look as if they were previously unissued on the Solid State LPs: 'Kids are Pretty People' (unissued on LP, the 'Presenting...' session) 'Sophisticated Lady' (45 rpm release only) 'Willow Tree (unissued on LP, from same session as the 45) 'Hawaii' (45 rpm release only) 'Lover Man' (unissued on LP, first Vanguard session) 'Mornin' Reverend (unissued on LP, first Vanguard session) Willow Tree, alternate (unissued on LP, first Vanguard session) The Second Race' (unissued on LP, first Vanguard session) 'Quietude' (unissued on LP, first Vanguard session)
  19. Did anyone else notice the strange coincidence between king ubu announcing he had just bought the set and the Board seizing up?
  20. Dexter Gordon 'Go' (BN NY USA mono original). Wonderful !
  21. That should just about cover (for us Euro-heads) the recent depreciation against the $
  22. Yes, this is a Mosaic that seems to get mixed reviews but I love it ! I have some duplication with original LPs such as 'Royal Flush' but its great to have all of the music in one set and the sound is pretty damn nice. That session 'The Creeper' with Corea on piano is also not to be missed.
  23. Yes, I'll blame them too for shafting me with a surcharge on my future Dusty Groove and Mosaic orders! I was just getting to enjoy £1 = $1.9
  24. Many Happy Returns Alfred ! :rsmile:
  25. A wise move King Ubu - this one is not to be missed !
